Blood 'n' Thunder 2025 Special Edition

Description:

The 2025 "bookazine" edition of Blood 'n' Thunder, the long-running journal of adventure, mystery and melodrama in pop culture of the late 19th and early 20th century, is nearly 300 pages long with close to 100,000 words of text and more than 100 illustrations. As always the focus is on pulp fiction and its by-products in other media: motion pictures, Old Time Radio dramas, comic strips, and the like.

This issue will be of special interest to fans of The Shadow, Doc Savage, and their respective creators. Pulp historian and novelist Will Murray tells the
complete story behind "The Golden Vulture," a Shadow novel originally written by Doc Savage scribe Lester Dent in 1932 but shelved for six years until being revised by Walter B. Gibson, chief chronicler of The Shadow's exploits. The article is loaded with quotes from correspondence between editor and writer, much of it only recently uncovered. Dent fans will also love "Boiled Eggs," a 1931 air-war story written by Lester but rejected by its intended market. This exciting unsold yarn, found among Dent's papers, sees print for the first time here.

Another Shadow-related treat is the publication of a 1929 novella titled "The Shadow of Wall Street," thought by pulp historian Sam Moskowitz to have influenced the later creation of the more familiar Shadow of pulps, radio, and movies. Read it here and judge for yourself.

Also in the 2025
Special Edition: Ed Hulse on famous detective-story writer Raymond Chandler and his difficulties writing the original screenplay for 1946's film noir classic The Blue Dahlia, for which he was Oscar-nominated. Ed also contributes the issue's longest piece: a comprehensive history of "The Bat," the legendary master criminal who first appeared in a 1920 play subsequently adapted several times to film and TV. Most importantly, The Bat was acknowledged by Bob Kane to have influenced the creation of a certain Caped Crusader still plying his trade in movies and comics.

There's much, much more in the
Blood 'n' Thunder 2025 Special Edition, written as always with the award-winning combination of fannish enthusiasm and rigorous scholarship that has made BnT a must-have publication for 23 years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Blood 'n' Thunder Ever

B.H. · October 4, 2025

Publisher and editor Ed Hulse has put out the best Blood 'n' Thunder Magazine ever. This edition is filled with so many great articles and stories, especially if you love the Pulp Heroes. Among these articles is the background story to "The Golden Vulture" story that was written by Lester Dent and was later adapted as a Shadow story by Walter B. Gibson. Also included is the story "The Shadow Of Wall Street" and you can clearly see a resemblance to the main character and what would become "The Shadow." The published for the first time story by Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage, that was "lost" among his papers and is included in this issue is an interesting and enjoyable yarn. This issue contains so many facts, and is a great addition to any Pulp history library. There is not a bad story in this issue, and this edition is a masterpiece. The only thing you as an interested reader should do, is purchase this edition and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommend this edition of Blood 'n' Thunder, and give it five stars!!!! This truly is a Special Edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Issue Yet!

E.P.M.J. · July 21, 2025

This is arguably the best issue of Blood N Thunder yet! Editor-Publisher Ed Hulse got pulp historian Will Murray to contribute a record four articles, including ones on Western pulp authors writing for TV, the “collaboration “ between Walter. B. Gibson & Lester Dent on a Shadow novel that took a few years to see print, Western pulp stories, and provided an unpublished short story by the aforementioned Mr. Dent. There’s also alengthy and informative overview of Mary Roberts Rinehart’s “The Bat” by Ed Hulse, and articles on writer Talbots Mundy by the late Brian Taves and Otto Binder’s “Adam Link” series by Matthew R. Brady. Plus a new review column by Gilbert Colon AND a reprint of Frank S. Lawton’s 1929 story “The Shadow of Wall Street”, which MAY have inspired the creation of the radio/pulp hero The Shadow! Lots of goodies to find here & I can’t wait for next year’s edition. Definitely Recommended!
