5.0 out of 5 stars Ride Along With the Author Through the Magnificent "Stolen Scenery"
As a reviewer I should report that I have myself, in my long-ago teens, hitched a freight train or two, and that I have personally met this author along the railroad tracks skirting Montana's Glacier National Park. This gives me added credibility to my opinion that this is the best book I've ever read about "hitching freight trains," which the author, George Graham, states that he has been doing for over fifty years. He does NOT recommend this practice to others, writing in Chapter 1 that, "Just in case you're entertaining ideas of traveling via freight trains, let me temper your enthusiasm with just a small dose of realism and warning. Riding freight trains is dangerous." And two paragraphs later, he writes: "Oh, and did I mention it is often illegal to be on railroad property?" His title describes this phenomenon as "Stealing Scenery," which he shows superbly in over FIFTY color photographs, some taken with his use of a modern drone. Near the end he gives the reader three pages of the "Language of the Rails." A "Bindle" is "a Hobo's gear rolled into a ball, and a "Porch" is "the area at the ends of covered hoppers that can provide a place to ride." As he contemplates all the consequences of his advancing age as a "father of two, grandfather of three," he wonders "Does that urge to wander and ride overcome everything keeping me at home? We'll see." I can only recommend this unique book very highly. I'll bet you've never read another like it. --Lee B. Croft
