Exceptional book by one of the foremost national experts on active shooters. This is a book about how to plan for and respond to an active shooter. Ed Monk gets to the root of what must decide planning and decision making, what are most effective ways to minimize the victim count. In the end it’s just simple math and time. He provides history of incidents, commonalities between them, common mistakes in planning and action, instances of effective planning and action, and then provides useful ways to think about and actionable ways to plan for an active shooter incident.This book should be required reading for police leadership, school boards, principals, church pastors, and anyone responsible for the security of a building.

Definitely the most honest, most well-researched, and most no-nonsense literary work on this subject! Ed Monk frames the problem and the subsequent solution in inarguable terms. This should be required reading for every school administrator, every policy maker, every person in a position of leadership with a faith-based organization, every security professional, and definitely anyone who trains security and/or law enforcement professionals.Get the book. Seriously, get the book.

It is a must read for anyone who carries a firearm. Ed lays it out in plain English why our response to active shooters fails so often. He uses quantifiable statistics, Time and Math that provides how we must respond to an active shooter in order to stop the threat and keep the body count down to single digits. He breaks it all down in his book and fully explains what must change in our society in order to properly counter a mass shooter event.

If you're remotely concerned about active shooting scenarios, and you need to be - read Ed's book! He did his homework and writes in a conversational style that that makes a heavy topic easy to understand. You'll get the hard facts that will help insure your safety and that of your loved ones. Get two, as once you loan a copy, it takes awhile to get it back!

Great book. Cuts through a lot of safety theater and focuses on the best answer to a frightening situation.The chances of it ever happening are very low but they’re not zero.Purchased a copy for my entire church safety team.

this book is both outstanding as well as disturbing. Mr Monk shows how our buerocratic school systems have no clue as to how to deal with an active shooter. He describes numerous attacks in detail and shows how the time it takes to stop one is way too long and there is a solution but most people don't want it. They would prefer to leave their children and friend to luck.

This is not scholarly research. This is practical real world truth. The author knows and has lived life and death decision making. Deciding how to successfully address a problem means forcing yourself to admit what is most likely to happen and discovering what you can do to keep that tragedy from becoming a disaster. Unfortunately, we have been addressing this problem with what we felt comfortable doing rather than what will actually work for the last 40 years. Ed Monk gives us the only true answer to the problem. It is uncomfortable, but works.

Excellent read with live saving information in a clear and no BS format. Mr Monk’s book should be required reading by leaders and stakeholders in Schools, Churches, Corporate and business places, malls and other public venues. A direct and blunt look at how to minimize casualties and how we are all taking the wrong approach because it is unpleasant and because we as a society have been conditioned! I had the honor of seeing the author speak last year at a faith based conference and was impacted immediately. As a self defense and safety trainer and retired law enforcement, This information changed my outlook and approach! Read the book and change your mindset! Well done sir.
Excellent review and direction for effective active shooter response
Ed is an obviously well trained and experienced soldier, teacher, and police officer. He bluntly and clearly lays out the active shooter problem, and highlights both effective and ineffective strategies.An easy read, this book should be mandatory reading for all educators & school administrators, and church and business leaders.It all boils down to: in an active shooter situation, what is the maximum number of victims we can accept, and how do we keep that number low... and the number won't be zero.
