Substantial stainless steel nail clippers best suited for dogs because of their size 6.3” x 3”) and weight (5.5 ozs). Clippers have a small (2.25”) metal nail file stored in the bottom of one handle. A silicone cover for the blades is included to store clippers safely closed and protect blades. There is a permanent safety guard that you can swivel into place between the blades. With the nail tip against the guard approximately 1/8” is trimmed. I don’t use the guard when trimming my dog’s nails, I move the guard to one side behind a blade. I wear magnifying reader glasses and trim nails carefully in plenty of light to avoid over cutting in the quick. The Swihauk clippers have a sturdy, thick and well attached spring between the handles. Spring issues are often the source of clipper failures when the spring breaks or becomes detached. Blades are sharp and make a clean, smooth cut, even on one of my dog’s brittle nails. Very reasonably priced, work well for dog nail care and look to be of good quality for long term use.

I would have loved to give these a 5 star! For the handle alone, it's so comfortable. It has a silicone non slip grip that is just the best and the blades are strong. I was planning on using these to replace my old, but well used pair. My old set are a hard plastic and have seen better days, but they have other features that are still better than these. The biggest reason I am marking these down is that the safety guide which is just a metal disc that blocks and prevents the dog's nail from going all the way through and between the guillotine cutting blades is in a frozen position. I wouldn't have minded if it was frozen in a position that completely blocked the opening, but it appears to be fixed in position and covers less than a quarter of the opening. I tried everything to adjust this disc, would have been happy with even half coverage, but it appears to be frozen in one position. Normally, I put my dog's nail against that block, to prevent cutting too far and going into the quick of the nail. These cutters do not give me enough surface area to do that and the block only comes into play when you close them fully. If you need a pair of clippers that allow you to make a full cut...then maybe these are the ones for you, but for non professionals it just makes me too nervous to put a wiggling and resistant dog's nail into and risk cutting too far. The cutting blades are very sharp and strong. I think they would have no trouble going through a large dog's nail.My other more minor issues are the cutters do not lock in a closed position. They only stay closed if you put on the thick silicone/plastic cap. That's not a bit deal, but if you lose this cap you will never be able to keep them closed. Lastly, there is a metal spring in the handle that springs them open and provides resistance when you close. It all seems to work well, but that spring doesn't look that strong or durable and if it breaks these would be pretty much unusable. It's a rating dilemma...Overall, these are much better looking and feeling than my old set. They are solid, strong, and have a great feel. The cutting blades and handle are all durable and well made. Unfortunately, I can't feel as comfortable using them without the better safety disc.

I immediately noticed the safety guard (and had to figure out what it was) and the silicone cover, which takes a bit of wiggling to remove.They feel well-made and open and close smoothly, but they’re not ideal for small pets. When I tried them on my elderly cat, she wasn’t thrilled—the sound and pressure seemed to startle her. The blades felt like they were crushing her nail, even though they didn’t actually splinter or crack it. The safety guard sat too far from the blade to be useful for her delicate nails. I eventually gave up and went back to my usual scissors-style trimmer.The included nail file is tucked into one of the handles, which is clever but a little tricky to get out. Overall, these are comfortable, solid clippers that would be a great value for someone with a medium or large dog—or even a big cat with thick nails. We’ve got two baby German Shepherd puppies with tiny, sharp claws, and while my two-year-old adores them, she doesn’t appreciate those surprise scratches when they jump up. Until they learn better manners, keeping their nails trimmed is essential, and these trimmers handle it perfectly.
