5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious, low caffeine tea powder!

L. · January 14, 2026

I am a matcha fanatic but I have never tried Hojicha tea so I jumped at the chance to order this and give it a try! It is made exactly like matcha so I used my traditional style matcha kit to make my tea with this powder. I quite enjoyed it!The flavor is nothing like matcha at all! It's closer to a black tea flavor but not really. It almost has a nutty flavor. And I love the fact that by roasting it it gets rid of most of the caffeine so this makes a perfect evening drink! It also gives it a warm brown color so it doesn't have the bright green of regular matcha, but the brown color suits the warm, nutty flavor so it makes sense. I think I will be using regular matcha during the day and this stuff in the evening because I do not like when caffeine interferes with my sleep and the older I get the more that happens! The first time I made this (when I took the picture) I think I used way too much! I should have used my matcha scoop but I just grabbed a spoon and there was a lot concentrated at the bottom of the cup when I drank enough to get down to that level and that was a bit strong every time I made it after that I made sure to only use the half a teaspoon that the bag says to use and it's delicious! I had a little bit of steamed milk to it in the picture but I've since switched to frothed milk with vanilla sugar mixed in and it is top tier! I'm going to be buying oat milk so I can try it as it's recommended in the advertisement because that sounds quite delicious!I really didn't know tea could be this good. And there's a lot to be said for the process of making this powder into tea. I love the ritual of making the Hojicha paste and whisking the water into it and following all the steps to make the perfect cup of tea! It's so comforting and enjoyable! The tea comes out perfect and it's a very warm and comforting drink for winter evenings when I don't want extra caffeine but I still want to warm up from a cold day! I live on a small farm so I am outside a lot all year round and having a low caffeine warm up tea for evening is perfect for us!The envelope of powder does not seem very big but when you consider that you're only supposed to use a half a teaspoon for each cup, and that is more than enough, this bag really does have 60 serving in it! I will definitely be buying this product again! Right now it is on sale for $14.99 which is an excellent price although normally it is still only $17.99 so I believe that is still fair for the amount you get! I very much enjoy the taste, to the point that I don't actually want to try a different brand! I'm very happy with this one. I often look for third-party testing on tea products but as you use so very little of this I don't think it's going to be an issue that it doesn't seem to have that. Although it would be great for my assurance if they could get some testing done on their product. I will still be buying more of this though because it is simply delicious and I love the ritual of matcha and now Hojicha!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth, toasty hojicha latte powder — low bitterness and easy to mix

E. · February 14, 2026

I received this hojicha powder to use mainly for lattes, and it delivers a warm, toasty roasted flavor with a mellow aroma and less bitterness than matcha. The taste is smooth and “cozy,” and the naturally lower caffeine makes it a nice option for afternoon or evening drinks. What I liked:Rich roasted/nutty notes and a smooth finishVery low bitterness compared with matchaFine powder that mixes well in hot or cold drinksWorks great for lattes and also blends nicely into dessertsNo additives (and fits plant-based diets)Value: At the current list price of $17.99 for 2.12 oz, the quality is strong, but the bag is on the smaller side—so it feels like the best value if you specifically love hojicha lattes or plan to use it for occasional treats and baking. Why 4 stars: Flavor and mixability are excellent, but the small size at this price point keeps it from being a clear 5-star value for everyday use.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Like Toasty Tea Than Coffee, and That Matters

♥. · January 2, 2026

The media could not be loaded. I bought this hojicha powder mainly out of curiosity. I enjoy coffee, but I was looking for something warmer and comforting that would not hit as hard with caffeine. Going in, it is important to understand right away that this does not taste like coffee, and it is not really trying to. If you expect a coffee substitute, you might be confused or disappointed. If you approach it as its own thing, it makes a lot more sense. Overall I think it has a decent value because of how they have to grow this in shade. The flavor is closest to an earthy, darker matcha, but without the grassy brightness that matcha usually has. Hojicha is roasted, and that roasting comes through clearly. There is a toasty, slightly nutty depth to it that feels grounding rather than sharp. It has a mild bitterness, but it is softer and rounder than coffee bitterness. Think warm, roasted tea notes instead of anything bold or acidic. It is calming rather than energizing in flavor. When made as a latte, it becomes especially smooth. Mixed with milk or a milk alternative, the earthy taste mellows out and turns almost cozy. There is no sweetness on its own, so adding a little honey or sugar helps bring out the roasted notes instead of covering them up. I found that it pairs well with oat milk, which complements the toasted flavor nicely. If you go in expecting a coffee like punch, you will not get it, but if you want something comforting and warm, it delivers. The powder itself dissolves fairly well with hot liquid, though whisking or using a frother helps prevent clumps. It does not have that vibrant green color people associate with matcha. Instead, it is more of a soft brown, which fits the flavor profile perfectly. The aroma alone tells you this is more tea than coffee. It smells roasted and slightly smoky in a gentle way.One thing I appreciate is how it makes me feel after drinking it. There is no jitteriness, no crash, and no need to chase it with water like I sometimes do with coffee. It feels like something you could drink in the afternoon or evening without regret. That alone makes it worth having around if you are trying to cut back on coffee but still want a warm, ritual like drink. This is not pretending to be coffee, and it should not be judged as such. It is closer to a darker, earthier matcha with a roasted personality of its own. Once I adjusted my expectations, I started enjoying it for what it is rather than what it is not. If you like tea and want something deeper and more comforting than standard green tea, this fits nicely into that space.
