5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally painful, but well worth the watch!

There is nothing negative that can be said regarding the acting or writing of this series. But it plays like a Greek tragedy. It may be realistic, but it hurts. If you're a mother, be ready to have you heart swell with the selflessness of Alex. Be prepared to be glad when mortal revenge is taken in the name of love. At first, I was angry with the amount of loss in this series, but upon watching a second time, I saw the beauty in a mother's love and the brutal reality of life in what was recently the wilderness. I cried, I smiled at the hope for the future, and I was reminded of how young we are as a country; how lucky we are to have all the amenities we so often take for granted. Prepare your heart. This is a story that does not hold back from the brutality that our forefathers faced. But I am so glad that I watched it. It made me ever more thankful for all that I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ending to a great series

L.A.C. · April 12, 2025

I loved 1923 but I knew after 1/2 into season 1 that the lovers would be separated and it would take till the last episode of 1923, season 2 for them to be reunited and return to Yellowstone. Watched enough of Taylor Sheridan to know that probably a lot of main characters would be killed off so glad Helen and Harrison and Brandon made it to the end. Personally I thought Brandon's character was great in this series. Tough as nails but he loved Alexia with a passion you only dream about. Just hated it all ended. Hope Brandon returns in 1943 but probably not.

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge, guilty pleasure. Great actors, pathos, some tolerable but over-ripe myths about America.

R.B. · April 6, 2025

Taylor Sheridan's productions are consistently well done, well cast and addictive. I have a problem with the narrative they fit into and maybe fault him a little bit for that. Still, this is one of the outstanding seasons of the Yellowstone series. Once again there's some resemblance to great films - in this case "Legends of the Fall".I'm particularly pleased with the casting of one part. For about ten seasons I enjoyed Jennifer Carpenter co-starring on Dexter and the sequels. I must have thought a hundred times that she was perfect for a good western. This season of 1923 obliged me, her's isn't a big part but she's absolutely perfect as a Marshall.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gratuitous violence makes whole show feel sadistic

B.B. · March 10, 2025

I wanted to enjoy this show as I generally love a historical drama and I pushed through season one despite extreme misgivings about the scale of violence against women because it had what this season also has, amazing settings and cinematography, richly contrasting landscapes, multiple storylines moving forward with the anticipation of how they will eventually intersect and the desire to see that culminate. Alas, three episodes in to season two and all my misgivings came flooding back. I have to keep my finger on the fast forward button so as not to be inundated with utterly gratuitous and conceptually pointless vivid depictions of violence in general but especially against women and indigenous people. Even the title of episode 2, "The Rapist Is Winter". Why? Despite all of the action (and, again, extreme violence) three episodes in and it feels strangely repetitive. On the ranch the female characters are alternately fighting off or being attacked by wild animals, Spencer is punching and shooting his way back home, Alexandra is subjected to one brutal experience after another in her immigration story which, as it leaves off at the end of episode 3 suggests that she might be in store for sexual violence in the next episode as well. I wanted to try and wrap my head around this method of storytelling as an effort to tell true stories from history that are not well known (such as the violent treatment of indigenous people in boarding schools) but I cannot accept that the only way to tell these stories is through repetitive and gruesomely graphic depictions which are doubtlessly agonizing for the actors to film and deeply disturbing to view. Women have been subjected to sexual violence since time immemorial and acknowledging that is essential. True. But, one example of how to do that on film that I think worked better was from Downton Abbey where you fully grasped the horror of what was taking place without being subjected to what, in Sheridan's work, often amounts to pornographic violence. Viewing these scenes, my empathy for the characters and their struggles as well as their real historical antecedents is surpassed by my wondering if the person who felt it necessary to commit these scenes to screen over and over isn't something of a sadist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrison, Helen, Brandon, Julia oh my-

Harrison Ford & Helen Mirren beautifully performed as always. These are bonfide actors! They gave me such satisfaction to watch people with true grit in their art. AND Oh, oh, oh my- Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer are two people I’ll be looking for in future film…super-duper talent, talent, talent! And, I believe the camera loves these two together ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Julia Schlaepfer is a rock star and stole the show.

P. · April 6, 2025

Sad that some give low ratings on the methods of story telling through the use of graphic violence and sex rather than the overall theme of good vs evil and how good eventually triumphs in the end. The finale was an awesome tear jerker. I fell in love with this show because of the dynamics between Alex's and Spencer's characters. Julia Schlaepfer stole the entire show. I had no idea she was American, I thought she was British the whole time. She's plays that part very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!!

This is such a great show. It has everything. I love the history in it. Such beautiful landscapes too. I love all Taylor Sheridan's stories. It's sad there won't be a season 3 especially with all the excitement and drama about to happen at Yellowstone. I really wanted to see how everything unfolded. I can't wait to see 1944 though. I definitely give this a 5 star! I will watch this again.
