Until then, I admit I had dismissed Selena as another Disney-kid like Miley Cyrus, trying to be a pop star. Boy, was I wrong!I almost overlooked this album, and that would have been my loss. It is brilliant, and Selena has a voice that while not quite as powerful as Cyrus', is strong and melodic. Best songs are Love You Like A Love Song (one of the best pop songs I've heard in ages), My Dilemma, Whiplash (a Britney Spears reject brought fun to life by Selena), We Own The Night (a great little track by and with Pixie Lott), Hit The Lights (like a pop version of Alanis Morisette's 'Ironic'), and the biggest surprise of all - 'Outlaw'. 'Outlaw' is one of those tracks you start moving to as soon as you hear it. I bet that both Miley Cyrus and Rihanna would've given their eye-teeth to have got 'Outlaw' instead of Selena. That song alone puts ciontemporaries such as Asley Tisdale and Demi Lovato firmly into the shade. Selena sings with passion, emotion, feeling - she doesn't just sing over the top of the music in the way said contemporaries do - she puts her heart into her songs and they sound all the better for it.I loved this album so much that I bought all her other albums from Bolo, and I haven't been at all disappointed. The only thing that I didn't like as much about this CD was one of the bonus tracks - A Year Without Rain - which had been given a bouncy remix, when it's actually a slower love song on the album of the same name (again, highly recommended!)So I'd advise you not to do what I did and overlook Selena Gomez - she's now firmly established as one of my favourite artistes - and no, I'm not usually a fan of this kind of pop. But don't lump Selena in with Tisdale, Lovato etc - she's far better, and her songs are good enough to put even Cyrus' material in the shade. Plus, Selena manages to sing great, mature, funky pop songs without descending into crass bad language and gynaelogical-parading like Cyrus. There's not one profanity in her songs, yet they don't suffer from it. I'm by no means a prude, but I have tired SO MUCH of Cyrus' f-bombs and tongue-sticking-out. Obviously Cyrus doesn't think the music can speak for itself, and to be honest who really thinks of her music when they think of Miley Cyrus? However, Selena obviously wants to be known for her music as well as her acting, and she's set herself a high standard with this excellent album.
