5.0 out of 5 stars A new way to frame health and longevity

I really appreciate how Dr. Studer framed the book that we can make wise choices to benefit our brain and body. So many authors write about the primal brain and how it drives us to make short term unhealthy decisions. Dr. Studer takes the approach that we can and should make decisions that add up and bring us health and happiness. He does a great job addressing diet, physical activity, sleep, social connections, and uncomfortable and new exposures. The information is presented in an easy to digest manner and also provides readers the options for a more in depth dive into the material. For the lay reader, he presents guidance on steps to take to implement the healthy behaviors. For the person who wants to know where the recommendations came from, the material is well referenced. As a healthcare provider, the information wasn’t new, but I picked up multiple tips and ideas that I can bring to my clients because of how Dr. Studer framed the material. I would recommend the book to fellow healthcare providers for the same reason. I would also recommend the book to the general population because of its message, motivation, and easy to digest format. I could see how this book could be the first step in their journey or motivation to continue the journey they are already on.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great information on getting better mileage out of your body! Who doesn't want that?
Dr. Studer has taken a holistic look at all the things that you can choose to do (or not do) with your body and has written a do-it-yourself guide to making sure your later years are full of quality. As a child of the 1980s, I liken it to a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book--not that it directs you to go to page 55 if you get a better night's sleep--but it's presented in a way that you can absolutely jump around, read what interests you, and "choose your own adventure" on ways you can easily extend what he has called "healthspan." Lots of us will live to a really old age, but what quality of life do we have at the end? Dr. Studer has done the dirty work of reading, studying, applying, and testing these strategies that are backed by science. He speaks in ways that lay people can understand but keeps it interesting for folks who have a larger science or medical background as well.Dr. Studer even uses some clever ways to convey information at any depth of understanding. He offers "Too Long; Didn't Read" segments (basically Cliffs Notes for health choices) as well as some personal anecdotes called "Dr. Studer Says," which bring the material closer to home and relates to his own personal life in sometimes serious, but mostly humorous, ways. While reading this book, you'll be able to immediately see areas in your life you can instantly improve, today!"Get busy living or get busy dying." Andy Dufrense says this near the end of the inspiring movie The Shawshank Redemption. In essence, this means we should actively choose strategies to give ourselves a better life; otherwise, what are we doing here? Give this book to yourself, or to anyone you know who might benefit from some helpful tips. No tricks here; no fad diets or any extreme "feel 20 years younger in a week" kind of hoo-hah. It's just real talk, real common sense advice. Think of it as a kindly health coach whispering in your ear.Dr. Studer wants you to live your life to the fullest. None of us will live forever, but take the life you do have left and find ways to make it the highest quality you can. That can start today when you choose The Brain That Chooses Itself.
5.0 out of 5 stars This book is for EVERYONE!
TBTCI is a unique read because it offers autonomy to the reader in ways other non-fiction “self help” type books don’t, and it would be reductive to even put TBTCI in that category. As a doctor of physical therapy, I adore this book because it provides ways to connect with my clients and offer them resources about how to engage with movement and exercise in a way that is motivating and rewarding. The references section at the end of each chapter made my jaw drop and I cannot WAIT to use those articles for myself and my clients and colleagues. I totally nerded out when I saw that!! On a deeper level, this book reminded me that aging isn’t only about exercise and nutrition, it’s about novel experiences, quality sleep, and building community, and it actually got me excited about aging!! I’m extremely blessed to have Mike as a mentor and I’m while I’m not surprised he wrote such an exceptional book, I’m forever impressed. Thank you Mike!
5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with great ideas and information!
A great read that is packed with ideas and the science/real world experience to support them. It's not necessarily a scientific style text book, it's actually quick read that could greatly improve the aging person's (everyone who is alive) quality of life--possibly adding years to that life! I gifted a copy to my 70 year parents as well and they've enjoyed it so far, appreciating the author's approachable lifestyle suggestions that have a powerful impact no matter when you start to implement them.
5.0 out of 5 stars Informational and motivational
Great book for a wide range of readers. Patients and clinicians come away more knowledgeable and inspired to make healthier life choices for the body and mind.
