5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Family-Friendly Thriller - Great Performance by Mel Gibson

l.m. · June 11, 2025

This is an outstanding film that offers wholesome family entertainment without any underlying messages. Mel Gibson delivers an exceptional performance that was genuinely moving at times. While I typically avoid scary movies, this one strikes the perfect balance—it's suspenseful and spooky without resorting to graphic violence, making it ideal for family viewing. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Disappearing A Little Piece At A Time

In a movie like 'Monster Summer' intrigue trickles in and out of pre-teen tree house excursions. 'Monster Summer' is an "American adventure horror" movie (Wikipedia) directed by David Henrie. Noah Reed(Mason Thames) is an Edgar Town little league baseball player who has a positive outlook on the future.Noah is beset early in life with passions to be a reporter like his father. The vocation of story telling exercises glib inducements to secretive scenario embellishments with his clique of like minded neophyte entrepreneurs. Noah's friends are Ben Driskel(Noah Cottrell), Eugene Wexler(Julian Lerner), and Sammy Devers(Abby James Witherspoon).Sporting mildly long curls of hair Noah Reed is not afraid to be intransent in hasty departures to his little league baseball game or in sharing seriously, convictions that 'old man' Carruthers is a potential monster, burying corpses in his yard by his tool shed. When the 'old man' is discovered to be an eccentric, possessing that waywardness which detracts from regular friendliness, the first impressions of mystery are foiled. The folklorist shadows of a Martha's Vineyard dusk procure greater terrors in overreach of separateness than Gene, or old man Carruthers. Noah is dispossessed of his fear just long enough to learn that Carruthers is a retired police detective.Noah and Gene are both well developed characters and the chemistry works excellent in this movie. Mel Gibson playing Gene Carruthers, the retired detective, is silent and jaded enough to be funny in some terse observations about Noah's fancies of there being in existence a witch. Mason Thames playing the young aspiring reporter asserts a pragmatic rambunctiousness without blemishing his youthful flows of self conscious reservedness. In the struggles of piecing together clues with the guardian-pupil bond of Carruthers and Noah, the director is able to utilize contrary catalyzing freedoms. Once sidetracked, new routes forced into sight and resulting actions are now energies turned towards better outcomes.Nora Zehetner plays Abbey Reed, Noah's mom. Lorraine Bracco plays Miss Halverson, one of the gilt secrets which invades Noah's imagination. 'Monster Summer' is set in 1997 and takes place in Martha's Vineyard, an island off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, that is a famous "summer destination". The towns have gazettes and sponsor communal, upscale old fashionedness. The roving camera panning the ferry landing at Oak Bluffs looms off of the teal, murky waters, and cruises over the parking lot borders and in front of the balustraded, white motel of the Reed's. This pointed setting consideration of a seaside community is overture to whimsical awakenings; the new arrivals coming or going in spontaneous accomodation. The ghouls serve to bring dramatic transition to these migratory characters. The theatrical poster reads: "It's The Summer When Everything Changed".

This was a very entertaining movie. Could possibly be scary for younger children but we enjoyed it as we do not watch "R" movies and this was very good without all the extra violence and bad language.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would be OK for most kids 8 - 14. Not a great Gibson film for adults.

J.i.M. · May 15, 2025

OK - so-so. Probably OK to watch with kids 8 or older, but not a particularly great Gibson film. Pretty lame screen writing but scary enough for older kids. Wife bought it and made me watch it. Milder than a typical Steven King horror movie but not much for adult watching. Probably OK for a targeted child audience - maybe an overnight for kids 8 - 11. Clean language and most of the scary parts are left to the imagination, with a kid-friendly ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good acting but lacked originality

D. · May 26, 2025

Spoiler alert!I’d of given a better rating but was disappointed with the old wicked witch theme. Anyone ever tell me they actually know a witch that can and does do those kinds of things I’ll say yeah you should make a movie about it, lol. But we all know it’s bull so I don’t know why they’re not giving it a rest already. Also the old grown ups never believe kids theme was some of the same old same old.I’d of liked to have seen a more original storyline.Other than that the acting was good and I appreciated the characters!
