What is edible chalk? Edible chalk is calcium carbonate.Why eat chalk? 1) It can be used to make edible decorations for cakes or parties. Just combine it with cornstarch or arrowroot powder, water, and food coloring, shape it by hand or pour it into a candy mold, then let it air dry or bake it; 2) It is used by some as a source of calcium, by others to satisfy unusual cravings such as pica (non-food items); 3) Calcium carbonate (chalk) is the primary ingredient in antacid tablets, and some use it to neutralize stomach acid/heartburn; 4) Some (me) just like trying unusual and/or weird foods.What are the dangers of eating chalk? Eating small amounts is not dangerous. Regular consumption can raise calcium levels too high, and may lead to constipation, high blood calcium levels, and/or kidney stones.What is it like to eat this chalk? Our family tried it and agree that it is chalky (surprise!); some also find it earthy, crunchy (me), nutty, clay-like, gritty, or mildly sweet (me again). It can be added to foods from casseroles to baked desserts to ice cream, or added to a smoothie.
