Pellegrino is always an entertaining and enlightening writer. I knew a lot about this topic; he taught more.In these dangerous times, people need a reminder…or in may cases, an introduction…to the horrors of nuclear weapons. Don’t wait for the movie (though I will be anxious to see it). Read the book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good but those run-on sentences are maddening!
A fascinating book which would have been much better were it not for the authors addiction to run-on sentences, some of which stretch 100 words or so. They force the reader to read each one twice to pick up the thread. There is no discussion here about whether the bomb was needed to end the war and that’s fine…plenty of books about that
5.0 out of 5 stars Immersive
Pellegrino is the most immersive non-fiction author I have had the pleasure of reading. His prose is a seamless and captivating expedition in literature, and it reads like experiencing (rather than merely visiting) history, like embarking on a new realm for a time. A high volume of double survivor accounts and original research make this a unique book amongst others in this subject. Ghosts of Hiroshima offers the Japanese perspective of enduring the initial and after-effects of humanity’s first episodes of nuclear warfare. But the book does not dwell on the tired moral debate of justifying or shaming their use, or fall victim to standard myopic themes of building and unleashing the bombs, which is where most publications both begin and end. This is an honest (and occasionally clinical) review of two defining events that humanity has both suffered, and remarkably survived. It communicates the harsh realities of those events and allows the reader’s own reserves of emotional intelligence to draw its own conclusions.Ultimately, this book isn’t about Japan, the United States, or events from the past. The underlying theme here is preserving our collective future, by understanding that humanity’s empathy must always remain greater than the weapons we wield. Because in nuclear warfare, everyone loses. I can appreciate why James Cameron wishes to adapt this book to film. He directs movies the way Pellegrino writes books. As two archaeologists, I anticipate a film planned between them that like Titanic before it, allows the past to shape a better future, “for tomorrow’s child.”
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written
Touching.. historical.. timely.. fascinating.. very much enjoyed the journey. . Look forward to seeing the movie.. it is worth the read
5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing
What a phenomenal book. Very well written to start with. I can only hope this written document describing the horrific destruction is enough to awaken people enough to realize this can never, ever happen again. Having some background in the field of radiation, my concern is that many of the general population reading this book will be able to grasp what the significance is behind the words and comprehend how destructive and dangerous these weapons actually are. Highly recommended read.
4.0 out of 5 stars A difficult history lesson for all of us in the nuclear age
The best part of having read this book is the understanding that I got of what happened on the ground when "Little Boy" detonated. The author holds nothing back in the descriptions of the horror. There isn't a theme of "should we have" or "should we have not..." in this book. It's just the facts. While I will recommend this book as a history lesson for everyone, it isn't an "easy read" and if you're looking for a page burner, this isn't it. I found myself reading for awhile and putting the book down for maybe a day so as to ponder what I had read. Some of it was so astonishing that I would stop and re-read parts of chapter.A highly recommend historical accounting.
5.0 out of 5 stars well written account
I enjoyed the book. Easy to read and well written. I now have a better understanding of the terrific impact of a nuclear weapon
3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.
I found the book disappointing. Although there are chunks of beautifully articulated writing the focus jumps all over the place. As if the author is trying to pull off a Quentin Tarantino “Pulp Fiction” kind of art style. The fact that the author even notes that many of the names of the characters sound the same shows he should have realized that his jumping around would get confusing. I think he really needed to have thought about the structuring of his story a lot more. The illustrations are also poor. Gives the book the feeling of bargain basement funding.
I got the hardcover

We must learn from history. This is a beautifully well written book. Highly recommend
