5.0 out of 5 stars So far the unit has played 100GB quite well.

    C. · July 2, 2025

The last model, X700M, had a decent amount of issues with 100GB discs, with some machines being apparently unable to play a lot of discs. There is no telling how much user error plays into this and how much it is bad software or hardware. That machine also ran a lot of apps and was quite bloated for such a simple device.I do not have, so far, consistent problems playing 100GB discs. Around 10 discs have played flawlessly, and one disc, on resume days later, seemed to stick on the layer transition. But since it was a resumed disc, and only one disc, I have no idea how often this could happen. Yet I don't watch movies 24/7, and since the issue only happened once, I can't say I care too much. All the players on the market have their issues, and I can't be bothered. I will however update this review to reflect my experience.I recommend this player above others at this time on sale. Because it does upscaling, and it has superior audio options, I personally do not see the point in paying 400-800 dollars for a Panasonic player, the UB820, that might also have issues over time. Same with the lesser 200-400 dollar version, the UB420, that does not have upscaling or Dolby Vision. When the 400 dollar model is on sale for 200+, it might be another option to consider, but without DV it's not an option for me. All the models are quite old in design.Notes about HDR settings:In various circumstances I use Tone Mapping ON with an LG OLED, Dolby Vision when available, or HDR10 to view a film. Tone Mapping negates either of the other choices when selected.Tone Mapping is used on my C1 because when HDR grades are incredibly dim, using Tone Mapping and then also sliders for Pixel Brightness and Contrast down slightly produces the best image with the most luminance on my LG C1. Films like The Thing, with only HDR10 in the version I have, appear quite dim and unrealistic in the snow. The Fugitive on the other hand is very bright and more realistic on 4K, not requiring Tone Mapping at all.I find Dolby Vision usually superior to HDR10, so that makes the cheaper Panasonic model quite useless for me. Because usually I seem to prefer Tone Mapping on when DV is not available, it is something I require for 4K movies. There just isn't as much dynamic room for changes with HDR10, and some 4K releases are very conservative, only grading smaller highlights with higher luminance. These conservative grades tend to not work out for me with only HDR10.Please do research on these issues before buying. Panasonic players also seem to have the same types of dated fonts as the Sony players; read about that issue below. It's an annoying issue for all these players.I would personally NOT buy the older Sony X700M model, as it has other issues that you may or may not experience. It's simply not worth it on sale or otherwise. For player options, 4K upscaling is on, Dolby Vision is on when needed, and I do not generally connect to the internet unless updating firmware; a disclaimer for those that care about some of the settings that may have affected the last player. I still think it was apps and overloading of the processor that probably caused a lot of the issues, but I have no idea what leads to disc freezes and stalls overall. No one does. The X700U looks refined yet simple, and while the glossy plastic on the front looks great at first, as with many other 4K players, it scratches with any kind of wipe whatsoever. Be careful when handling the device, and use your remote for opening and closing if you really care about it. Watch out for fingerprints they will not come out either at least if you are looking with a flashlight. The software is about the same from last time. I see the firmware is new, but the feature set appears mostly the same as the last player. They may have dropped or added one or two things. This player was almost silent in operation. I detected very little noise from the player itself while playing 100GB discs like Chinatown, Dark City, and Seven.I do not want or need streaming apps on my player, and Sony has gotten rid of them thankfully. The more streamlined this thing is the easier it will be to play the discs, the only part I care about on a 4K player. Hopefully they have tinkered with the chipset and laser to produce something that is consistently solid over time while playing 100GB discs. As always use a MagicFiber cloth or something similar to clean your discs, and never put a dirty disc in your player ever. One of the best things about this player is the automatic door that closes and opens with the tray. It prevents most dust from entering the tray area, leading to a cleaner player over time. Remember, keep the player in a more open environment, and don't let dirt or dust in whenever possible. That's all we can do to make sure things are working well on our end.The remote is small and nice to use for my hands. Easy to press the buttons, and the sensor in the player can see it from wide angles. No issues with setup at all. Really didn't have to change many settings. The in-movie options menu has more options, but I wish they would have at least upped the resolution on the font.Player control fonts on a 4K screen look like DVD or early Bluray days, and it's the only thing I dislike about this player. How hard can it really be to upscale some fonts and put some polish on your UI presentation?Remember, you have to toggle Dolby Vision on or off on this player, and so far it has worked fine. I don't consider it an issue at all as I set up a movie beforehand, but just keep in mind you need to toggle it off if the 4K film does not have Dolby Vision. All in all I really hope this one is quality because the image is great, audio options for SACD are a plus for audiophiles, and I really don't want to have issues with 100GB discs again. Prayers are out. Sony, please update the resolution of your UI.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent and affordable 4K UHD and SACD player

    g. · July 22, 2025

Picked this up on sale on Prime Day, and I’m very glad I did. It is simply a no-frills high quality 4K Player: it lacks any display, lacks WiFi, and any built-in streaming services, and I’m perfectly fine with that. What it does have is an excellent 4K UHD picture and very good upscaling of HD blu-ray content. It has Atmos, Dolby Vision, and DTS-X, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. It also has something exceedingly hard to find today: SACD support. This player lacks analog outputs, but those are not missed at all. Instead you get HDMI capable of delivering 192/24 PCM resolution and native DSD.I use the DACs in my processor, so this unit is acting primarily as a transport. The only things it can’t play are DVD-Audio discs (a dead format) and HDCD-encoded CDs.For this price and performance I’m perfectly happy to let those things go.Some have complained about older models not reading 100GB discs. So far I have had no trouble going doing so. Hope it stays that way.Highly recommended!

    C.E. · July 5, 2025

For simple 4k UHD discs, it works fine. Made it through The Matrix without an issue. While watching Dune2, it got stuck towards the end before Paul’s fight. It was unresponsive and then skipped a section when it finally resumed 45 seconds later. So this newer updated model may still have the issue where it locks up if the disc has multiple layers. I may need to get the expensive Panasonic. :-/

4.0 out of 5 stars Limited controls

    D.P. · July 13, 2025

This is a great 4K player that has lots of options, BUT there are no front panel controls (which is the reason I only gave it 4 stars). Everything is done from the remote. If you lose the remote, you are out of luck and who knows how many years this remote control will be available if your remote is lost or breaks.

This is probably the best choice you will find in a 4K BD player. Panasonic also makes one, but more expensive. The Sony works without problem and is very straightforward to operate, with good instructions. This model has been in production for many years, so any problems with QC seem to have been solved.
