Godzilla vs. Biollante (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Description:

Diving into delirious realms of imagination, this second film of the Godzilla franchise’s 1980s resurgence showcased the towering beast for a new generation of fans. With a wild plot encompassing spies, psychic children, and bonkers biotechnology—and some of the coolest special effects in the history of Japanese cinema—Godzilla vs. Biollante stands as a high point in the ever-evolving mythology of the King of the Monsters.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Godzilla Movie is Back for Fans! But NO ENGLISH DUB

G.T. · August 22, 2025

Godzilla vs. Biollante is an anomaly for Godzilla fans, just like Godzilla 1985. Unlike other Heisei era Godzilla films, this film was never in any of the collections that included Godzilla vs. Ghidorah through Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, it never had a theatrical release like Godzilla 1985 and it has always been caught in a limbo due to HBO/Miramax licensing it and having extremely light playing time on both HBO and Cinemax (only once!) and going out of print very quickly in its DVD/Blu-ray offerings. It was a pleasure when Criterion got the licensing and they delivery pretty well, but not perfectly!First of all, the casing is a sturdy a 4k/bluray cover and has two discs - one 4K and one Blu-ray with an insert of an excellent movie essay by Jim Cirronella, and on the other side a killer Biollante drawing by Eric Powell (who also did the beautiful cover). The Menus are presented as a standard Criterion list and also includes a commentary by historian, Samm Deighan. She sounds a little stilted in her execution but she shares some excellent facts. All special features, except for the commentary which is on both, are on the blu-ray disc only. You have an option to watch the film with or without subtitles, however...I would recommend with them because it is only in Japanese! That I would say is the biggest negative of this package because an English Dubbed version does exist (and was on previously on the DVD/Blu-ray Releases) and they even include the English trailer in the special features! I was tempted to knock off a star for that because Criterion has not done an excellent job of securing all versions and audio tracks for Godzilla movies, unlike the Arrow Gamera Collections. Even if Toho may be to blame, it has to be mentioned. The movie itself looks beautiful in 4K and is honestly, one of my favorite Godzilla films. If you are a Godzilla fan or are a sci-fi or movie fan, I would encourage you to see it for its themes of bio-engineering, bio-weapons, nuclear deterrence, and even corporate espionage alone. It introduces characters that play continuing roles in the Heisei series of Godzilla films and offers its own uniqueness in plot, original music and special effects. Its uniqueness is its strength and the Godzilla Suit Costume introduced us to what many consider to be the Gold Standard of the nuclear menace.Overall, an excellent buy for someone new to the film, especially since previous releases are all out of print. As for those who own the Blu-ray or DVDs, it is up to you to get the extras as well as the cover art and new commentary. Unfortunately, there is no English Dub and that was a disappointment, however, the movie has never looked more beautiful so I would still recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Godzilla 4K vs Biolante-amazing

If you love Godzilla, this movie is a must buy. In 4K for the the first time ever. Amazing movie magic as only Toho could do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring On the 'Zilla in 4K

Not much new here other than the remastered 4K and I typically expect more from a Criterion release as far as extra features go. Still, with the superior picture quality and sound it's a must have for Godzilla fans who appreciate the Japanese original. So get this and ditch that old copy you have. Take note there is no English dubbed track, which is not an issue for me but may be a deal breaker for others who don't want to read subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Godzilla film

S.H. · September 25, 2025

As both a Film Specialist and a fan of Godzilla, I'm happy to have this special edition into my Film Library. It felt like the first time watching it again and I couldn't have been happier with that feeling, the reason why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5, I didn't like that I couldn't watch it dubbed like the rest of my Godzilla films. Other then that, I still absolutely loved it from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Japanese language only. No English dub.

M. · August 29, 2025

Looks quality and packaging is nicely presented. Has a fold out poster. Does NOT include English dubbing, however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing that this exists.

B. · September 28, 2025

At this point I thought I would never get to see a Heisei era Godzilla film in 4k but here it is. Picture quality is outstanding. And if you collect the blu rays you know for at least 10 years Godzilla vs Biollante was the hardest to find. So its so great that Criterion chose to do this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any Big G fan

Beyond happy for that alone but also happy to see this movie getting the love it deserves. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a criterion release of the whole heisei era soon!
