Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s.

Nazi-occupied Romania, 1941: In a small and gloomy village hidden deep in the mountains, German troops have arrived to lay siege. Although warned by the townspeople to stay out of a mysterious and ornately carved structure known only as ā€œThe Keep,ā€ two arrogant soldiers ignore their orders and break into the obelisk, hoping to find stowed treasure, but instead unleash an ancient evil force which, with each new victim, grows stronger and more powerful. After suffering large casualties at its hands, Captain Klaus Woermann is informed that the only person who might be capable of defeating this monstrous and demonic entity is an elderly Jewish historian named Dr. Theodore Cuza, who is being held captive with his daughter in a concentration camp…

The legendary horror spectacle from director Michael Mann (Heat, Miami Vice), adapted from genre writer F. Paul Wilson’s New York Times best-selling novel, THE KEEP is a mesmerizing visual feast of supernatural terror enhanced by a remarkable original score by Tangerine Dream (Sorcerer) along with jaw-dropping special effects by Nick Maley (Superman, Lifeforce). Starring Scott Glenn (The Hunt for Red October), Jürgen Prochnow (David Lynch’s Dune, Das Boot), Alberta Watson (Hackers), and two-time OscarĀ® nominee Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings film franchise), Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to at last offer the 4K UHD and Blu-ray debut of this highly sought-after and long unavailable cult film classic, newly restored for this release from its original camera negative and featuring exclusive new interviews with cast and crew revealing the fascinating production history of this one-of-a-kind cinematic experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE KEEP (1983) 4K UHD + BLU-RAY

Q.K. Ā· April 13, 2025

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Vinnegar Syndrome released on both 4K UHD (which I am unable to presently view) and Blu-ray this much requested and delayed WWII/horror/sci-fi picture from Paramount based on a book by F. Paul Wilson directed by Michael Mann about Nazi soldiers arriving in a remote Romanian mountain village to occupy it who discover a huge mountain fortress/citadel known as a Keep where a powerful imprisoned being is accidentally released from by them, causing havoc for all concerned unless a Jewish scholar (played by Ian McKellen) and a mysterious traveler (played by Scott Glenn) can stop it.Looking splendid in HD, and this long unseen film had never gotten a DVD release either. It contains an audio commentary and several interviews with the author, cast and crew, plus the theatrical trailer and a still gallery. Also contains reversible sleeve art, though mine did not have the limited-edition slipcover.Interesting and visually impressive film has a fine score by Tangerine Dream but a largely incoherent story due to the studio (Paramount Studios) cutting the length down from 120 minutes to 95, which is the version presented here. The discarded footage is either legally unavailable for inclusion or no longer exists, though a slightly extended ending was shown on television at one point. A failure at the time, this has since gained cult status and I know has sold quite well indeed, so time will tell if this version can one day be improved upon. Judge for yourself as always.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Keep 4K

G. Ā· May 8, 2025

Great 4K Remaster of a cult classic as far as I am concerned and it was directed by Michael Mann. I believe it is his first film and for whatever reason disliked his own film. I love this type of film may not be for all but well done IMO.

I own this movie and the book. The book was amazing but the movie suffered from studio interference and poor editing. It would be amazing to get the cut Michael Mann wanted to release. Very different film.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Keep" to keep! In Blu-Ray.

A.C. Ā· April 26, 2025

Very happy to have been able to find a copy at a reasonable price. Especially when you live outside the United States, because the publisher produces small numbers of these titles. Fortunately, there are still quite a few standard editions of this rare film available. Good move from Vinegar Syndrome, even if they didn't manage to get their hands on the "Making of" announced by an Australian editor. All of a sudden this movie is going to become easier to find in HD; but not in a version closer to the director's wishes.šŸ¤”

4.0 out of 5 stars Glad it was finally released

j.l. Ā· January 8, 2025

Given the constraints they had, Vinegar did an admirable job with this 4k release of The Keep. The video looks phenomenal, while the sound is hit and miss at times, through no fault of the company. It was great that they had access to the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. I only wish that permission could have been gotten for the extra footage, and I’d love to see Mann’s original 3.5 hour cut.I won’t describe the movie plot as everyone likely is familiar with it. I would, however, urge you to read F Paul Wilson’s novel if you haven’t. It’s amazing.Again, a very welcome release. Thanks Vinegar Syndrome, continue the great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars ā€˜The Keep’ is a true horror classic

S.M. Ā· February 14, 2025

This new presentation of ā€˜The Keep’ is certainly worth the wait.A real cult classic,it grips you with its suspense and feeling of foreboding evil. While not a blockbuster,it takes you on quite a ride.As for the production value it is a well pruduced and atmospheric thriller. The new 4k transfer is brilliant and captures all of the essence of the actual original film. The sound is a great improvement on the theatrical master. Definitely worth the investment.

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This movie has been lost to those who loved it for over 40 years. VHS and Laser Disc were the only formats officially available, despite the bootlegs that have existed. Michael Mann washed his hands, and wants nothing further to do with it - hence no release. While a TV version does exist, and contains additional footage, Vinegar Syndrome was unable to obtain the rights to it. While it would be nice to have, it's not the director's version of a 3-hour rough cut submitted for approval. Being locked out of his own film, and having it cut and released without his association, was enough to ensure we will never see what should have been.Despite this, the Keep stands as a fantastic but slightly incoherent, slightly muffled odyssey, spinning a mesmerizing story that strays much from its pulp roots. You will question your judgement as you slowly recognize the star-studded cast, repeatedly asking yourself, "Wait, isn't that..." Followed by, "Wow, it is!" The Tangerine Dream soundtrack is as inseparable as it is memorable, and many may walk away to look up this German band's discography after its finale. There is little out there to compare this movie to. It stands on its own, only to be outdone by the 3-hour director's cut we will never get.

Finally it's here!

Over the last 38 years or so I was having having to watch this movie on a bad copy of the VHS tape, then a just as bad DVD which was a bad copy from a VHS tape which I bought here. I bought the Bluray version of it and was just amazed at how good the picture was and was seeing things I had never noticed before. Very impressed with both the video and audio all things considered. For me it was worth every penny as I have been waiting for this since the introduction of DVDs. Would have been nice to have a directors cut but it sounds like that will never happen so I'm just happy to finally see and hear it in good quality.

Great Remaster. 4K disc is faulty.

P. Ā· February 24, 2025

Great to have a true Remastered version of this film. Blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic. Colours are amazing, rich and saturated. Print is clean. Why 2 stars? 4k disc starts pixelating around a third of the way in. Stutters, freezes etc. Unwatchable.Had to get a refund as all the copies are now sold out. No replacement.Sucks.
