Editorial Reviews

Review

“What makes Therese Huston's 'Sharp' truly exceptional is how seamlessly it bridges the gap between complex neuroscience and everyday application. In a world where many struggle not from lack of knowledge but from an inability to access their skills under pressure, Huston provides the missing piece of the puzzle. Her science-backed techniques for calming the mind, improving focus, and enhancing decision-making are precisely what negotiators and anyone facing difficult conversations need most.”
—Kwame Christian, author of Finding Confidence in Conflict and host of the Negotiate Anything podcast

"A fun, fact-filled exploration of the neuroscience of self-improvement, offering suggestions everyone can use.  Huston presents a clear and engaging review of scientific findings, often overturning conventional wisdom, and pointing to simple ways we all can be sharper, healthier, happier and more constructive at work and in all phases of our lives."
—James L. McClelland, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, Computation and Technology

“This user’s guide to your brain is the most practical, down-to-earth, and funny manual on mastering your life I’ve ever read.”
—Eddie Stern, author of Healing Through Breathing, Four Lessons for Lasting Health and Happiness and One Simple Thing: A New Look at the Science of Yoga and How It Can Transform Your Life

“This book should be read by anyone who’s ever wished they could turn a frazzled mind into focused energy.
Sharp distills the latest findings in neuroscience into straightforward, actionable insights for your everyday life.  Imagine if, instead of hoping for a good day, you had the tools to create one. With Sharp, you can.”
—Scott Barry Kaufman, author of Transcend, Professor of Psychology at Columbia University, Director of the Center for Human Potential, creator and host of The Psychology Podcast

“This book stands out from the pack. It provides concrete steps and daily practices, coupled with a depth of knowledge about biology and neuroscience. Dr. Huston’s training as a scientist, teacher, and educator has allowed her to do the hard work to improve your productivity and efficiency. Run, do not walk, to get this book, and read it cover-to-cover.”
—Marlene Behrmann, Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh, former Director of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition

5.0 out of 5 stars clear, simple book on how to improve your brain

R.M. · October 12, 2025

This is a beautiful, short book explaining several ways to improve your brain function, your relationships with people, and generally your life. It is written in a friendly, humorous, and accessible way, and is easy to read. It contains explanations based on research from brain science and psychology. The author does a great job explaining the science and applying it to real-world problems. The book contains citations to the research articles. I found the chapter summaries to be particularly useful. A very helpful and interesting book.

Great read and informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read

M. · July 1, 2025

Here is what makes this book so good: It provides real research to back up the recommendations. Not only citing the research, but understanding of how the research was conducted, which impacts the findings. The recommendations are very realistic and things you can easily start incorporating into your life. I immediately started replacing some of my coffee with tea! On top of that, the book is an easy read - so many similar books can be tedious, but this was an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a magic solution

A.M. · July 16, 2025

It’s engaging, easy to digest, and packed with useful insights from neuroscience that are genuinely interesting. The author does a good job breaking down brain science into relatable ideas that I could see myself in. It's not magical, it's stuff like how multitasking messes with focus, or how sleep and movement affect your mental sharpness. It’s the kind of book that makes you go, “Oh, that makes sense,” pretty often. That said, while the ideas are good, putting them into practice takes more intention. You don’t finish the last chapter and magically become more focused or productive. It’s more like a helpful guide for building a better mental toolkit, but actually applying it in daily life means taking those ideas and deliberately working them in, habit by habit.

Plus, I love the examples and all the options I have to keep my brain healthy.

This book is an engaging, thought-provoking read that will teach you how to think smarter from day-to-day, and even how to rebuild grey matter as you age. (Hint: it's not doing the daily crossword puzzle.) Therese Huston's writing makes you want to lean in and take notes, and I promise you, you will find tips in this book that you will immediately incorporate into your life. Not only that, you will clearly understand the science of how your brain works. Best of all, the book is entertaining and every tip is backed by the latest scientific research. Loved it.
