4.0 out of 5 stars Decent little paring knife, but not real damascus steel
This is a perfectly serviceable little paring knife, and even came sharper than expected out of the box. I still sharpened it to my own standards, and my wife was instantly happy working with it on routine things in the kitchen. I'm knocking off one star because I do not believe it is damascus steel. I think this is laser-etched to look like it has that damascus pattern on it. I don't really care whether it is or not -- but when you advertise it as one thing and I believe it to be another, that gets you dinged for a star. Overall, a pretty decent knife on the cheaper end of the spectrum that is fine for everyday kitchen tasks.
3.0 out of 5 stars NOT balanced. Very handle heavy
Knife in box makes for a beautiful presentation, even if the included stickers have spelling errors and are more geared towards males rather than females.I've been working in professional kitchens for 15+ years and I have never, NEVER seen cone shaped finger guards... with pointed tips. What the ? .. If you know how to hold and use your knife, you don't need finger guards. Especially cone shaped ones that resemble piping bag tips. They are adjustable but to me, utterly useless. Not even sure which way these are supposed to be worn. And why are these even a thing when your fingertips should be curled under? Don't care for these, it's the knife I'm focused on.Knife is visually beautiful but very handle heavy. And that bit of exposed metal at the end of handle only adds more weight. I have small hands so that metal bit did not interfere with my grip but I would imagine a larger hand, it's going to get annoying really quick digging into your hand. Why even have a bare metal design on the grip at all?The blade is sharp and cut thin slices of cooked chicken breast (because that's what I was making when this knife arrived)Trying to tournée a potato and the blade feels light, almost too light compared to the handle. Not hard to control because it is super sharp. For now.As a whole, this knife isn't for me. It's beautiful but the weight does not inspire confidence in use. It's average at best and over priced. Add the current $10 off coupon and now it's a better deal. Not for professionals, fine for household use.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic value and high quality - excellent for gift giving
I'm an avid cook and appreciate a high-quality knife when I'm cooking. So over time I've realized the value of authentic Damascus steel blades. The 15-degree angle they are sharpened to makes them work so great, it's like night and day when compared to an older, less sharp kitchen knife. So, when I needed a good paring knife I made sure to pick one with a full tang and an ergonomic handle, and ultimately purchased this Mosfiata paring knife right here. As it is the end of summer and our garden yielded plenty of delicious home grown tomatoes, it was quite easy to assess the sharpness of this paring knife while I made a batch of fresh salsa. I'm happy to report that this paring knife passed the 'how well does it cut an overly ripe tomato' test with flying colors. It came nearly razor sharp. The handle feels great in my large hands, and it made quick work of the salsa prep. Now I didn't purchase this to give as a gift however I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that this is literally nearly purpose-built for just that. The box it comes in looks very nice, and they even included an assortment of stickers that one can use to seal the outside of the wrapping paper with a thoughtful message, such as "I love you Mom." I score this an A+ across the board.
1.0 out of 5 stars Like Clara... I have a beef
Truly AWFUL are the best words for this MOSFiATA Damascus Paring Knife.Where's the Damascus? It's barely noticeable and they carved a line on the knife to look like Damascus. Very, VERY cheap looking. The handle is a joke. The ends of the black resin (?) handle are rough and sharp so when I hold the knife those edges rub against my skin. Those things that look like piping tips are skin protectors....well ok, I get the idea, it's not a bad idea but you look like Edward Scissor Hands with them on.....no thanks. This knifes edge is dull also. I ran my finger along it and nothing. The edge of the metal looks curved under, thus I had no fear of running my finger lightly along it. Nada, nothing (thankfully), so the edge is dull.Buy another brand, don't waste your money on this piece of junk.Honestly, this knife is so bad, I was going to give it to Goodwill but why have some one else waste money on it? To the trash it goes.
2.0 out of 5 stars The blade is fine, but the handle and ergonomics are all off
The blade is fine and sharp and seems well made enough. The problem is the handle is quite bulky for a blade so small. It kind of has the feel of a wood carving knife in that respect. I suppose, if you've got REALLY BIG HANDS, you might appreciate a paring knife with more handle than a knife this small usually has, but me and my regularly sized hands find this thing a bit awkward for food prep. Also, the lanyard hold pommel is an awkward little addition that isn't necessary (who puts a lanyard on any kitchen knife?), and it's oddly sharp enough you might hurt yourself with it. No one needs to be able to do pommel strikes with a paring knife.
