“The Light Doctor” by Martin Moore-Ede is a must-read for anyone concerned about their health and the growing array of environmental toxins that affect us today. As a lighting designer, I've been aware of the relationship between light and health for many years, but the depth of insight that Martin provides in this book is truly eye-opening.Martin Moore-Ede has been a pivotal figure in lighting research for decades. While working at Harvard in the 1970s and 1980s, he was part of the team that discovered the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) — the human biological clock that regulates our circadian rhythms. His expertise and experience shine throughout this book, revealing just how deeply artificial lighting affects our health in ways many of us have never imagined.We live in an incredibly artificial world today, a stark contrast from how humans evolved over millions of years. Since the invention of the light bulb in 1870 and the electrification showcased at the 1893 World’s Fair, our environment has been fundamentally transformed. More people need to know about the side effects of artificial light at night! Our bodies evolved or were designed for natural bright sunlight during the day, and darkness at night. We have ignored our biology for too long and mankind is now seeing tragic health consequences. Dr. Moore-Ede was involved in identifying the circadian clock in humans and has done amazing amounts of research on circadian rhythm health and the effects of exposing our bodies to light at both the correct times of day and incorrect times. This information is crucial to human health at a root cause level and is a must read for medical professionals and anyone wanting to help improve overall health. As Morpheus in the Matrix offered up a red pill to wake up Neo and change his entire perspective on life, once you start researching circadian rhythm health and the effects of natural sunlight on the body, you'll never see light in the same way. Read the book.I found this book after stumbling across related research by Dr. Jack Kruse, and my health has improved so much after implementing steps to optimize my natural circadian rhythm. I used to be an extreme night owl. I now wake up with sunlight and am sleepy by 9pm! I feel so much better overall! Given the fact that both my parents died from cancer related conditions, I am thrilled to be taking steps to improve my health without the need of a prescription. I am truly grateful for doctors like Dr. Martin Moore-Ede that are getting this research into books for the general public.

I've been paying attention to my light environment for over a year and learning what I can from experts like Dr. Martin Moore-Ede. A challenge I've run into is that learning about light often requires one to be a screen, something I'm trying to avoid. Dr. Martin Moore-Ede shared a lot of his knowledge on the platform Substack, but I much prefer a paper book in my hand. So I was thrilled to see that he published one.This information is extremely important and I can say that changing my lightbulbs and trying to better utilize the sun has enormously improved the quality of my life. Last winter was the best I've slept in decades. I was disappointed to see him recommend sunglasses though! As well as sunscreen and getting your vitamin D from supplementation rather than from UVB rays from the sun--that messaging is inconsistent with everything else he describes. But other than that, love this book, love his personal story, love the research he's done and his efforts to induce change (getting 248 scientists to agree on 25 consensus statements about circadian rhythms and light was impressive!) I've already gifted this book published just last week to several family members. Get it!

I really enjoyed this book and was able to take information it gave me to purchase a few new circadian bulbs and lights for my house to improve my health and longevity. A lot of eye opening information about the detriments of indoor (and outdoor) lighting.

Absolutely convincing and helpful. I personally benefited from reading this book, successfully changing my late owl circadian rhythm to one that is more in harmony with the nature, and more aligned with a normal working environment. I am living a much healthier lifestyle now, appreciating and benefiting from natural morning sunlight and time spent outside in nature while reducing exposure to strong blue light at night. Thank you, Dr. Martin Moore-Ede!
Illuminating a neglected health issue.
This book comes with the weight of serious science rather than at the whim of some celebrity.It deals with health impacts that make the latest dietary fad insignificant. Why haven't we heard more about this when the hard scientific research has been done and the results known for years?Everyone not just night workers needs to know about the health effects positive as well as negative of correct circadian conscious lighting.For those of us living a long way from the equator getting lighting right is more complicated but intelligent circadian illumination holds the promise of a positive impact on day length related conditions such as Seasonal Affective Disorder as well as the numerous other benefits set out by Professor More Ede.
A very relevant book that can change the future of lighting
For a company that is developing quantum dot LEDs not only for plants but also human centric lighting, this books has been super relevant. This book provides all the relevant studies and scientific reasons on why current LEDs are bad and we need to change the status quo. This has bolstered our commitment further to bring high quality light indoor. I have even bought the book for the entire team to read and get excited. Thanks a lot for writing this very relevant book.
Mastering Your Health Starts With Mastering Your Light
A must read!! Every time we flick the LED light switch on at night, we are also flicking the switch on, and exposing ourselves and our family to numerous adverse health affects from metabolic disorders and diabetes, to heart disease, to poor sleep (which increases all cause mortality) to certain cancers.The Light Doctor literally shines a light on how our body works, the impact LED lights have on us and our biological rhythms and what we can do about it at home and in our work places.Dr. Moore-Ede is "the" expert in this field and does an incredible job at presenting complex processes in easy to understand language. He provides the answers and solutions on how we can all protect ourselves and our family and backs everything up with the latest research and science. There is also a great use of color images throughout the book so if you're going to read one book about artificial light, this is it!!

A work of monumental importance
As a 30+ year veteran in the lighting industry I have experienced massive technical breakthroughs that have dramatically increased lighting output per watt. At the same time I have seen many poor decisions made to sacrifice light quality in favor of saving the most capital. This disdain for what is easily our most important sense never failed to surprise me. Now with the remarkable and tireless effort by Dr. Moore-Ede we have a document that stands as a testament to just how important natural lighting is and how deleterious poor artificial lighting can be to ones health and longevity.
