5.0 out of 5 stars A fun trilogy

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This set contains the three Bill & Ted films, or as some may call them Keanu Reeves' other, other trilogy, on three separate Blu-Ray discs. I will spend most of the review on the third, and newest film, Bill & Ted Face the Music since the other two have been out long enough that most people who would get this have probably seen them multiple times. But, as a short synopsis, the first movie, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was a late 1980s movie about two high-school slackers who could not play any instruments yet had a band whose music was fated to unite the world and become the philosophy that future civilizations relied on. It was also the movie that would make Keanu Reeves a household name, and cause nearly everyone to question his casting in The Matrix about a decade later. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey was the sequel that followed a couple of years later, that had an almost Terminator-like theme where evil robot versions of Bill and Ted were sent back to kill them and destroy their lives to keep them from having any influence on the future. The third movie, released in 2020 revealed that the duo, now in their 50s with daughters of their own, had yet to write the song that would unite the world, which put the future of all civilization at stake. That is about all you need to know about the plots of each movie. The movies definitely fall within the realm of tongue-in-cheek comedy, with some deeper themes of family and friendship (especially in the third movie) weaved in. They are meant to be a kind of "stupid funny" and you can tell that the writers and the actors took their work seriously, nobody seemed to take themselves too seriously, which made all the movies work, despite all the movies having a different feel and tone from each other. Each of the discs has an assortment of extras including theatrical trailers for the first two movies, two different commentary tracks for the second movie, as well as a retrospective on the second movie that was filmed around the time that the third movie was being made. For the original movie, there was also (I kid you not) an air guitar tutorial/featurette, and for the most recent movie, the main bonus feature was a 45-minute portion of the virtual comic-con panel hosted by Kevin Smith and Including the writers, producer, director, as well as Keanu, Alex Winters, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine, and William Sadler.Overall, the movies are all very good, if you take them for what they are. They are not meant to be academy award-winning movies, just fun, fairly innocent, tongue-in-cheek comedies. I like that the third movie was able to get much of the serving original cast members from the first two movies back together, and even found a way to provide a posthumous George Carlin cameo. I know that there are some people who thought making the third film without Carlin would never work, but in reality, he had a pretty small role in the first movie, and even less of a role in the second movie (which really amounted to an extended cameo), so while he was a fun character from the original movies, he was not so integral to the story that they could not make a third movie without him. And, I think that the new cast members who were brought in did a good job with their parts, even those who were playing parts that were recast. For those of us who grew up in the 1980s, the first movie especially will cause a bit of a nostalgia trip and the third movie provides a fitting end to the story. It is definitely worth the pickup for those who still get movies on physical disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Comedy Trilogy!

R. · January 29, 2021

The Bill & Ted 3-film collection gathers all three films of the Bill & Ted trilogy in one 3-disc Blu-ray set. The first film, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (1989), introduces William “Bill” S. Preston Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves), two high school seniors in San Dimas, CA who spent more time dreaming about their band, Wyld Stallyns, than paying attention to school and so are failing history. Rufus (George Carlin) visits them from the future to help them lean about history with the aid of a time machine as the future depends on them passing their history presentation and forming their band, whose music will inspire a utopia. In “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” (1991), gym teacher Chuck De Nomolos (Joss Ackland) sends robotic doppelgängers of Bill and Ted back from the future to kill Bill and Ted and destroy their legacy, hoping to create a society based on his own ideals. Bill and Ted must challenge the Grim Reaper (William Sadler), escape Hell, and enlist the aid of aliens in Heaven to return to the world of the living and defeat De Nomolos. The franchise continued in 2020, with “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” in which Bill and Ted are struggling to create the music that will inspire the utopian future. The Great Leader (Holland Taylor) and Rufus’s daughter (Kristen Schaal) warn them that they have a limited amount of time left to create the great song or reality will collapse. Bill and Ted travel to the future to find their song, pursued by a robot (Anthony Carrigan), while their daughters, Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving), travel to the past in order to create a band that will make the great song for their fathers before time is up. The threequel combines all the best elements of the first two films into a picture that successfully blends nostalgia with a new narrative. This is a great way to get all three films in a single set. It would be better if it included the animated series from Hanna-Barbera and DIC, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures,” that ran for 21 episodes between 1990 and 1991. The first season, from Hanna-Barbera, featured the original cast reprising their roles for voice work, though in the second season Evan Richards, Christopher Kennedy, and Rick Overton replaced Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, and George Carlin, respectively. There was also a short-lived live-action television series, also titled “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures,” that ran for 7 episodes in 1992 and featured Evan Richards, Christopher Kennedy, and Rick Overton reprising their roles from the second season of the animated series. These were entertaining in their own way, even if they didn’t influence the third film. Beyond film and television, the franchise expanded into a comic book series from Marvel between 1991-1992, some comics from BOOM! Studios in the late 2010s, a comic book miniseries prequel to the third film from Dark Horse Comics, a cereal based on the cartoon, a musical in 1998, various video games, and a live show at Universal Studios. It’s a surprisingly long-lived a versatile franchise, and this 3-movie collection is a must-have for fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect wrap up to a great, fun adventure franchise!

L.H. · February 17, 2024

OK first the product quality is " Excellent Dude!" OK when they made the first movie around the time Mike Myers from S.N.L. did "Waynes World" they had no idea how well, " Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure" was going to do. Needless to say, it did well...and where there's money sequels will come. We got lucky; "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" was also " Totally Excellent Dude!" Thereby allowing for the wrap up & full-on trilogy of hilarity. Needless to say, I was dubious about the quality of the final film. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a well thought out way to wrap up the franchise. I hate spoilers so I will just say our aging adolescent heroes, age but thank goodness fail to mature. Their adventures or misadventures are as funny in the final installment as the first. If you're reading this, chances are you are no stranger, to at least the 1st movie. So, if you liked the 1st movie. You will probably enjoy them all. A great trilogy of not only sophomoric humor but, actually a quite intelligently written story line. including morals and life lessons from the most unlikely pair of teachers you'll ever run across. And in the world, we live in everyone could use a laugh...a moment of levity in an otherwise dreary world where jokes have become taboo! So, enjoy a little well established anti-establishment humor... but laugh softly you don't want to get cancelled for having too much fun!

A most excellent Blu-ray set

J.P. · September 8, 2024

I remember as a kid, watching the first 2 Bill and Ted movies on VHS, and eventually watching the 3rd movie when it came out on digital/physical media. Watching the first 2 all these years later, they still hold up.There is some mild cursing in the movies, but overall they are pretty safe family viewing...because let's be honest, we've heard kids nowadays say MUCH worse lol.I highly recommend this movie to any Keanu Reeves fans, or anyone who just loves the "dumb slacker" kinds of comedies they had in the late 80's early 90'sPicture and Audio quality were amazing, but wouldn't expect less from Shout!
