Carob powder is not chocolate, and it doesn’t taste very much like chocolate. There is a bit of a flavor that is somewhat reminiscent of chocolate, mostly the kind of bitterness that you get when eating dark chocolate. The bitterness is probably the most similar in flavor to chocolate, but carob has its own, unique flavor. It tastes a little earthy, and has a little bit of natural sweetness. You will probably want to eat it with some kind of sweetener, to cover up the bitterness. The carob powder tasted fresh when I opened the bag. Texture: This comes in a very fine powder. It has a texture similar to powdered sugar. The fine powder makes it easy to mix this into various recipes. It blends well with liquids such as smoothies or milk. The powder doesn’t clump up, either, which make mixing it up easy and convenient. The powder is so fine that it can poof up into the air when you open the bag, so watch out for that. The bag: The bag itself is made from thick plastic, kind of like a freezer bag, so it should work to keep the carob powder fresh for a long time. The bag is re-sealable, and I was quite pleased to find that the bag re-seals easily and stays closed. The package was easy to open, as well- I didn’t even need to use scissors. If you like the flavor of carob, you will love this powder. It’s an easy and convenient way to add carob flavor to your smoothies or baked goods. If you have never tried carob before, I recommend getting a smaller amount and trying a bit before you get a larger quantity. You don’t need very much carob powder in order to flavor your food. So, if it turns out that you don’t like it, you won’t want to have a bunch left over. This bag will probably actually last for quite a while, so if it’s your first time trying carob, consider getting a smaller quantity to experiment with first. If you already like carob, this is a pretty good deal for a large-ish quantity of carob.

Our local dog boutique store has a bakery where they make fresh treats, and one of the main ingredients they use is carob powder. I've never had carob powder prior to this, but I gave this a try in a smoothie before I baked it into treats for my dog. It has a nice chocolatey flavor profile without all the extra calories and sugar. I can see this being a great healthier alternative to chocolate in baking.Carob powder is a dog-safe chocolate alternative for dogs and I'm excited to bake some more homemade treats for my dog.

When I was young, carob powder was a big thing - it was suppose to replace chocolate. While it tastes somewhat like chocolate, it is not real chocolate, and most people that crave chocolate want (need) the real stuff. I, however, always liked the taste of carob, and thought it has a unique taste unto itself.So it has been years since I used it, and was happy to re-discover it. My tastes have aged, but I still like this stuff. I have been adding it to my daily protein shakes to give it an upgraded flavor. I have also been using it in making brownies - not as a chocolate replacement, but as an addition to the cholate, making the brownies burst with flavor.This is a large bag, and it will last us for a while. It does not take much to impart the flavor to whatever you are making. It mixes well in liquids, and does not clump like real chocolate or cocoa powder can.A good value for a good product. This carob powder from Unpretentious is a great addition to my pantry. The texture is good, it blends into my protein shake easily. (I make mine in my countertop blender) It has a nice, mild flavor.The bag easily reseals to keep the remaining powder fresh.

Not everyone likes carob but I'm one who does. I've tried many powders and other carob products over the years. Most are good to okay and some are dreadful. This is a good one. No bitterness or off flavors. It just has a rich carob taste with a hint of sweetness (the powder is unsweetened but carob has some sweetness on its own). This would be great to bake with.

Carob powder is a versatile ingredient. While you can use it in smoothies, I find it’s good in homemade shakes, and in faux chocolate cookies. Note that carob is naturally sweet (unlike cocoa or cocao) so you won’t need to add as much sugar if making cookies. I’ve discovered you can make cookies by pretty much any random mix of a powder (real flours/chickpea flour/sweet potato flour/almond flour/bamboo flour/etc.), a fat (oil/butter/fats), something sweet (sugar/coffee syrups/molasses/honey/etc.), a leavener (baking soda/flaxseed/egg/etc.) and whatever add-ins or flavorings you want (in this case, this carob powder).This carob powder is legit and delicious. The taste is chocolaty and sweet. It’s not a perfect chocolate substitute, but for those with migraines or other aversions to chocolate, it’s a very satisfying substitute. It has many health benefits, too! Definitely recommended!
