5.0 out of 5 stars First-time folding bike owner. Amazing for the price!

I have never owned a folding bike before, but I do have a normal eBike. I am reviewing this from the perspective of someone who loves their eBike, but is unsure on folding bikes -- especially cheap ones. Please see my video overview for more details. This bike ships in a large box, and must be assembled. All necessary tools are included (some Allen wrenches, wenches, and a screwdriver). The manual is well written with diagrams for every step. It read well - not the typical poorly translated “Engrish” manuals I have gotten used to.Assembly took me about 45 minutes, though I bet I spent 5-10 just clipping off zip ties and removing packing. The steps are all well explained, and none are more complex than “put this in that and tighten the other.” I did find it odd that the manual starts giving instructions on how to fold the bike down before it was fully assembled. There was also a front axel brace installed on my unit, which needed to be removed before the wheel could be attached - the manual did not mention that, and my lack of experience with building bikes had me confused for a moment.Once assembled, the tires need to be inflated to the values shown on them — mine were 40 PSI max. The battery also must be charged with the surprisingly small charger. The manual says charge time is 5 1/2 hours, but I did not time mine. I just kept an eye on the red light of the charger and unplugged it when it turned green. The handlebar and seat can be adjusted up and down with a quick release clamp. There are numbered markers on the post so once you find your settings, it is very easy to set them again if you have to shorten them for folding (or for someone else to ride it).I am 5’ 10” and there was enough adjustment room to set it up for me to ride comfortably.Folding the bike is done in two steps. There is a quick release on the frame when must be undone, and then pulled to one side to release a pin. Only then will the frame fold over. The handlebar has a similar quick release. With the frame and handlebar folder down, it is quite compact and fits easily in the back storage compartment of my car. The pedals also can be folded flat. When folded, it did not appear there was any way to lock things in place. Once you figure out where to grip it to pick it up, it is easy, but the first time I tried it, the bike was kinda unfolding. There are two sets of keys included — three for the ignition, and two for the battery. The battery slides in to a groove, and then the key can be used to lock it in place. To activate the battery, the key can turn from “off” (locked in place) to “on” (locked in place, and activated). A third position is “unlocked”, for removing the battery. There is a charging port on the side of the battery, and another connector where you plug a cable from the bike in to the battery. On the handlebar is a bell, and another keyhole. A second key is used here to go from “off”, to “on” to “on + lights.” There is a front headlight that is quite bright, and a tail light. When brakes are applied, the tale light flashes.Although the bike has pedals, they are not required to make it run on the motor. You tap the brake, and then just turn the grip and the bike takes off. And it really takes off. This is a single speed bike, and I wasn’t expecting the small 350 watt motor to be this responsive. You can ride full on electric without pedaling at all, unlike some expensive eBikes that only run in “pedal assist” mode. I quite like that.I am only in my first week of owning this bike, and I expect to update this review in the Spring with more observations. For now, the first rides have been surprisingly fun.I expected the small 16” tires to give a rough ride, but they do not. I tested a particularly bumpy sidewalk to test the front suspension and it worked well.I expected the smaller motor to have problems on a steep incline in the neighborhood. That hill is enough that my Gotrax scooter barely makes it up. This bike just slowed down to about 9 mph and kept on going. I was pleasantly surprised. On the handlebar is a simple display that just shows battery level - one to four bars. There is no speedometer or odometer. It would be nice to have both, though I did test speed using a GPS app and saw the bike easily doing the 15 mph speed the manufacture states. As to distance on a charge, I do have a way to verify that. I have been taking trips through the neighborhood, around the block, and am still on my original charge. I plan to take the bike to work and ride it to lunch and see how many days of light travel I can get on the battery.eBikes are heavy, but since you can quickly remove the battery, you can lighten it a bit for loading it in an out of a car. For storage at home, I leave it set up, but you can fold it down and push the seat down to make it more compact. The bike has front and rear disc brakes. They work well, though I need to adjust my front brakes. During assembly, I pushed them a bit more than I should have, trying to get the disc in the right place. Mine rub slightly, so I need to adjust that.Pedaling the bike is okay, but as one would expect from a single speed bike with small wheels, it’s not going to give you the ride experience you get with a full size bike. I could easily pedal around the block, but I don’t expect to ever have to pedal this bike unless my battery runs out on me. I consider this an electric bike with a pedal backup system ;-)It is winter here in Iowa, so all my test riding has been in sub-freezing temperatures. This is not great for battery life, so I expect it to be even better when temperatures warm up.No complaints here. I think I am sold on the concept of a folding bike. There’s something really nice about being able to undo two quick releases and fold it down, then just pick it up and set it in the back of the car. If I want to take my other bike anywhere, I have to hook up the bike rack. I can fold and load this bike quicker than I can get the bike rack attached.Very pleased so far. I will update this review if I encounter any issues.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great e-bike!
I received this e-bike over two weeks ago, and it has already become a fundamental part of my day. I use it to ride around my neighborhoods and lakes; the experience unmatched. It's fast enough to make you feel the wind flowing through your hair, yet slow enough so that i don't have to worry about getting hurt. I really enjoy riding it. However, it's not like the average e-bike: it's far better. There's so many nice details and features that amplify my experience and help me feel safe about owning a bike. The battery is easy to remove and recharge, and it also has a key lock that can be secure it and prevent it from being stolen. Additionally, the e-bike has those extra facets for bikes that you'd normally have to buy separately, like a light on the front and a loud horn. I cannot recommend it enough.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love the accessories!
I’ve really enjoyed riding this bike. It is perfect for riding around the campground. With the foldable option it was easy for us to load it up in the backseat of the truck during the rain and overnight to keep it safe. It also makes it easy to transport anywhere we want to take it. I really like the fact that the battery is removable to make it easier to charge and not have to bring the power outside or the bike inside. I took this bike down a dirt trail and had no issues getting through it. The suspension makes it a very comfortable ride. I really like the fact that it has the rack on the back of it to strap stuff down or to be able to install a basket. I was able to adjust the seat by myself very easily. I highly recommend purchasing this bike. Great quality for the price. Love the design with all the extras it came with.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great electric bike
I am generally happy with this bike and over regarding their customer service and willingness to do whatever it takes to meet customer satisfaction. Came into this review the 1st round with a lower rating, but I wanted to give it some time of actually testing the bike out and managing the hiccup with Engwe first to determine if I should change it to higher which I did.I ordered this bike for my wife and my son .They are very happy with this electric bike .They are very comfortable when riding. I have been super happy with them so far and would recommend them to anyone looking for a folding electric bike. The range seems to be great on them as most of our rides have been 10 to 15 miles and each ride has only depleted one of the five bars on the battery.I’ve given this item a 5 star.
4.0 out of 5 stars Check Brakes
It's a great starter electric bike, but get the brakes checked and aligned after assembly, my front tire rubbed against the brake. You'll be able to tell if it does that, the noise is clear. Other than that though, love the bike!
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for summer outdoor activity
This electric bike has been an amazing purchase and a great good summer outdoor activity companion! It’s built heavy duty and feels very sturdy even on bumpy roads. The battery life is good, lasting through several rides before needing a recharge. It was easy to put together right out of the box, with clear instructions and minimal assembly. One of my favorite features is the 3 ways riding function: Electric Mode, Pedal Assist Mode, or just riding it like a normal bike. I switch between modes depending on my energy level or how far I plan to go.Highly recommend this bike for anyone looking for a reliable, fun, and durable electric bike for commuting or weekend rides!
Adventures with the Gotrax EBE1 Electric Bike
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Please note: I added the silver cupholder, it does not come with the bike. The rear suspension means its definitely smooth enough to carry a timmies cup back home in the morning or ice cap.I've been revving around on the Gotrax EBE1 16" electric bike for quite a while now, and boy, are we excited to share our experiences with this versatile gem! This bike is hefty, clocking in close to a whopping 100 lbs. But, let's spin this positively! This weight gives the bike a sturdy feel and great stability on the road, which we absolutely love. The magic of the Gotrax EBE1 lies in its incredible adjustability. My wife, all of 4'8", and I, a 6'1" guy pushing 220 lbs, can both comfortably ride this bike! That's one small step for man, one giant leap for adjustable bike designs! Now, the speed - this isn't your wind-in-your-hair, adrenaline-pumping speedster, but it offers a comfortably paced ride that lets you take in the scenery and simply enjoy the ride. And the electric-assist feature, while subtle on flat terrain, is an absolute lifesaver on those pesky uphill battles.Recently, we took our two Gotrax EBE1s on a 20 km round trip to our local beach, and guess what? We returned home with still a third of the battery left! Plus, the recharging is as speedy as it gets, only taking about 90 minutes. And here's the kicker - despite its size, this bike folds up so compactly that we can fit two of them in the trunk of our Smart car. Isn't that just amazing? We adore this bike for its foldable design, making storage a breeze. Here's my fun take on the highs and lows of this bike:Hoorays: 🎉-Versatility: It's a chameleon, adapting to riders of various sizes.-Battery Life: The energy endurance is absolutely commendable, paired with speedy recharge times.-Compactness: From a robust bike to a compact carry-along, it's convenience at its best!-Battery Security: A lockable battery - because security never goes out of style!Oops: 🤔-Need for Speed: Not for the speed junkies out there.-Instrument Panel: We miss an odometer or speedometer for tracking.-Add-ons: A few accessories like a rear rack or a brake light would be nice. While our town's hilly terrain and uneven paths might cause the battery to drain a bit faster, this bike meets the challenge head-on, making every ride an exciting adventure. So, here it comes... our rating for the Gotrax EBE1 16" electric bike is a whopping 5 out of 5 stars! 🌟 Despite its minor imperfections, its size adaptability, ingenious design, and the pure fun we've had make it an absolute winner in our book. We love it so much that we bought a second one for my wife's shopping trips. We're all geared up for more thrilling rides ahead with our Gotrax bikes! 🚲💨
PERFECT
This is an AWESOME bike. Perfect commuter and easy to handle. The welds on this bike are GREAT and the seat is comfy.
Not for speed freaks, but great for errands / getting to work*
I won't lie - I bought this because it was the cheapest electric bike i could find on Bolo that didn't have "child" or "kids" in the description, and didn't look like a toy. I knew everything going in, I had done my research, and this seemed like a good choice.First - this is heavy. If you're having it delivered and it's not coming right to your door, bring a friend or get a vehicle to carry it home - it's almost 100lbs. Yes, I carried it home, and no, I did not enjoy that part.I'll keep this short - it's bigger than I expected, but in a good way. I really thought it was going to be like a scooter with a seat, but it's a good size, and even at 210+ lbs, I don't look completely comical riding it. It handles my weight perfectly fine. This is not super fast when pedalling - it's not slow, it's just not fast. If you like a somewhat relaxed and mostly-carefree trip, this may be the bike for you. The only option to not use electric-assist is to turn the bike off and take the key out. From my personal experience - and maybe this is because of my weight - I didn't really notice the assist (much) unless I was on an incline and it definitely helped with that. RAs for riding under my own power without any assistance, it was fine - it feels like a normal bike. Again, a not-terribly-fast bike, but a bike just the same. If the battery happens to die on your trip, you're not stranded - just likely to get a bit sweatier than planned.Using this as an electric-only bike was surprisingly fun. I feel like i got faster using the electic motor than i did with pedalling alone, and I went for a ride to get some groceries at a no-frills kind of grocery store (15km round trip) and using mostly power, I still had 3 of 4 power bars left. Recharging took under 90 minutes.Short version : if you want something compact (because it folds) that you can store in your home, but something big enough to feel like a real bike, and your main objective is to get to work (*when they make you come in) or run errands, this is a great little bike. If you're looking to go off-road or do the tour de france or just refuse to ignore your need for speed, maybe this isn't quitei what you're looking for.Personally, I love it - and the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars overall is because I actually have a a *slight* need for speed...but that's what my 29" mountain bike is for.Highly recommended.
Disappointed - Battery Life Far from Advertised
I purchased the Gotrax 16" Folding Electric Bike with high expectations, especially with its advertised 25 km range on pure electric mode. Unfortunately, I’ve barely managed to get 5 km out of a single charge, which is far below what was promised. To add to the frustration, I reached out to Gotrax, and they assured me they would ship a replacement battery. That was over two months ago, and despite multiple follow-ups, I have yet to receive anything or even a response. The lack of customer support is disappointing.I even bought the Bolo product protection plan, but I am unsure how to proceed as I haven’t received any helpful guidance from the manufacturer. If you’re looking for a reliable electric bike, this model may not meet your expectations in terms of battery life and customer service. Disappointing purchase overall.
