Description:
Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. For those who still believe prog is a four-letter word, Caravan remain a mystery - More fool them, for they are missing out on some of the sweetest and most tuneful melodies in 70s rock, whether it be the jazz- inflected vaudeville of the title track of If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You, the gentle celebration of Virgin On The Ridiculous from Caravan & The New Symphonia or the funky ambition of The Dabsong Conshirtoe on Cunning Stunts. Formed, like Soft Machine, from the group The Wilde Flowers, Caravan have much in common with UK 70s prog, punning titles, gatefold sleeves, many songs well over 10 minutes long, frequent line- up shifts, but they always had an innate accessibility - partly due to guitarist and lead vocalist Julian 'Pye' Hastings' easy- on-the-ear singing style. After one album on MGM in 1968, Caravan signed to Decca and released their calling card, If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You. It's title track became a turntable hit in 1970, leading to a Top Of The Pops appearance, and the rest of the album parades the group's variety of styles and includes fan favourite For Richard. This re-issue faithfully replicates the original 1970 Decca Records UK release.

5.0 out of 5 stars great discovery
I've been a huge Caravan fan for years - literally 50 years - but only for ONE album - the classic "In the Land of Grey and Pink" with its distinctive English sound, mixing folk, jazz, and early "prog rock". I've occasionally tried to look up other stuff by them but have been disappointed. They changed their line up so many times, that their sound and approach altered a lot, and it seemed as if I didn't like anything else by them. Until now. Because it's so easy to find things these days, I finally tracked down, "If I could do it all over again etc". And to my delight - it's very nearly as good as In the Land of Grey and Pink. In fact it's the immediate precursor - and with the same line up - so it shares many of the characteristics - including several longish medleys with great keyboards and bass playing from the Sinclair cousins, and some dreamy, slightly psychedelic vocals from Pye Hastings, and a quirky, folky song by Richard Sinclair ,which is very much in line with the mood of the next album. Jazz, folk and rock again mixed together. I find I'm listening to it over and over again. Caravan are a cult band essentially - known mostly for Grey and Pink - and associated with the "Canterbury Sound" and they were extremely inventive, funny and excellent musicians. If you like Caravan, this is a great album to look up. I'm loving it. Also check out the bonus tracks, especially A Day in the Life of Maurice Haylett. Enjoy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, great band
Although Caravan is a band from my youth, I realised only later how impressive their music is. After listening it on YouTube several times, it was time to purchase a couple of albums.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Little Listen
Nineteen-seventy's If I Could Do It All Over Again I'd Do It All Over You, the sophomore effort by Canterbury Scene favorites Caravan, is not as good as its successor In the Land of Grey and Pink, but it easily tops its rather dated predecessor, the self-titled Caravan. Its nearly 10-minute track With an Ear to the Ground You Can Make It is its best representation, starting out simple but slowly building into a respectable groove of its own. The rest of the album is a tad whimsical, but great care and craftsmanship is evident in the songwriting and lyrics. Bassist Richard Sinclair's vocals remain pure and persuasive.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential and full of surprises!
Wow! I had forgotten just how great this album really is. I put on the remastered cd last night with a good pair of headphones and was instantly transported back in time. Beautiful melodies smoothly but quite unexpectedly segue into hard-hitting (though highly structured) jams that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Dave Sinclair's keyboards absolutely rock while the rest of the band cooks right along with him. The addition of Jimmy Hastings' flute and sax adds so much colour and depth to the extended pieces--top notch playing all around! I really love the "Englishness" of the vocals and lyrics, with their typically understated humour and charm. What else can I say? Together with "In The Land of Grey and Pink" this is the best stuff Caravan ever did, though "For Girls Who Grow..." is pretty close in overall quality and intensity. It's worth mentioning that the sound quality of the remastered disc is quite good (Richard Sinclair's bass sounds wonderful and I have a whole new appreciation for Richard Coughlan's excellent drumming) and the liner notes are insightful and interesting. Sorry for gushing, but I'm still on a cloud after hearing this again for the first time in quite awhile. Hurry and get it and be sure to buy a copy for a good friend. They'll love you for it. Cheers!
5.0 out of 5 stars Caravan's First Album
Outstanding record from 1970. Second Album by Caravan. Ultimately reissued in 71 formats 1970 - 2001
5.0 out of 5 stars A Second Great Work From Caravan
It's not so much in the title track to this LP, but all the other songs combined that showed that Caravan still had writing potential that extended the psychedelia that Pink Floyd had laid out before probably best heard in Day In The Life Of Maurice Haylett. Even moreso than their first album this one has Pye Hastings Vocals presented in more contemplative moods. Just awesome. This middle album of their 3 great psychedelic and souped up(Canterbury Folklore and Jazz) ones should have been so more highly rated.
4.0 out of 5 stars Caravan
Four stars because although this easily standsvup well with pink floyd, kevin ayers etc, the production is mediocre. The vocals are so much in the back of the mix sometimes that you can barely hear them.other than that, a worthy addition to your prog collection.
5.0 out of 5 stars Caravan's Debut?
I JUST this CD. A friend of mine turned me on to Caravan so after a couple of "burned" CD's I thought "I like these guys enough to put in my very picky CD collection And I wasn't wrong. This a debut? Stunning and I don't use the word lighgtly. Some great pop songs and then some epic prog-ish mind blowers. About as cool as you can get in the genre, imho.
UN ÁLBUM CÓMO UNA FLOR EN PRIMAVERA.
Honestamente, el mejor disco de la banda de Canterbury.Infravalorado.Según las críticas, el mejor es el primero, In The Land Of Grey And Pink, y también se habla mucho del For Girls Who Grow Plump in The Night, yo tenía ambos hace ya mucho tiempo, pero hace unos 40 años, cuando adquirí In The Land Of Grey And Pink, era una edición muy rara, que no he vuelto a ver nunca más, era un vinilo doble cuyos discos eran In The Land Of Grey And Pink y el otro el que estoy reseñando en este momento, If I Could Do It All Over Again, I d do It All Over Too, el primero y el segundo respectivamente de la boda.
