I received the Marine Commander 7-50 a few years ago as a present. I used it multiple times out on my boat looking for birds diving, kelp patties, other boats, etc. Also took it on an Alaskan cruise. During the cruise I had a chance to compare with others using a variety of glass. I felt the construction, visual clarity, visibility when darkness is approaching, weight, etc was superior. As a result, I bought a second set, the Marine Navigator, so my wife could have her own set for those times when we both wanted to view wildlife, other ships, coastline features, etc. Autofocus is a game changer. We’ve used the binoculars on numerous cruises and fishing trips, sporting events, for years. I’m well satisfied!

1.0 out of 5 stars Really just bad binoculars and terrible quality

What can I say. This is the third pair of Steiner binoculars I'm returning. The first was a Navigator 7X50 that I purchased on Bolo. I returned those because the left side could not focus. It's as if the eyepiece was tilted and about half the image on the left barrel was always out of focus. I decided to get these commanders since they were "superior" optics to the Navigator. I actually bought my first set of Commanders from Hodges Marine and had to return those because of some kind of weird blemishes inside the eyepiece in between the lens elements so again I purchased another pair here on Bolo. Optically, they are ok but not that great for $1500 though. They have lots of distortion around the edges and while they do have an 8° field of view, only the absolute centers are sharp. The biggest issue I had with the second pair is that during assembly at the factory somebody got glue on the outside of the rubber where it dried and marred the surface! On a $1500 pair of binoculars, this is simply unacceptable. Anybody who tells you that these are 5 star binoculars is just WRONG! They cant even compete optically or with fit and finish to my 10 year old Fujinon FMTR 7X50 and those retail brand new today for less than half the price of these Steiners. To make matters worse, these $1500 Steiner's are totally made from cheap plastic, at least the lenses are still glass. Even the diopter locking rings are super cheap plastic and haven't even been deburred properly they have plastic flashing on them like some cheesy dollar store toy. Steiner is so cheap in fact that the version without compass just has a hole in the body where the battery would go if you have the lighted compass option. This hole is covered by the rubber armor but if you put your finger there, you can push the rubber armor into the hole. They couldn't even bother with a silly plastic plug. $1500 is just plain unacceptable for this kind of low quality. Maybe $200 would be more in line with this current iteration of Steiner 7x50. They should change the name of these from "Commander" to "Scallywag".
