Clark Gable was re-teamed with the beautiful Jean Harlow for the sixth time, in this delightful M-G-M romantic comedy. On screen, Jean Harlow was pure platinum: white-blonde, rare glamourous and tough. But she was fragile off screen, succumbing to kidney disease at the achingly young age of 26, just as this film was about to complete production. So Saratoga became what it was never intended to be: a farewell to the great star. Gable and Harlow share the screen with a superb cast of M-G-M’s best supporting players. The story with its colorful racing-circuit setting is a hoot: a snappy, sexy tale of a horse breeder’s daughter (Harlow) who’s engaged to an upstanding millionaire (Walter Pidgeon), but drawn to a brash bookie (Gable). Saratoga opened a month after Harlow’s death and grieving fans made it a box-office smash.

I received this move on the 29th of February 2024 from the Bolo system in perfect condition!! I love the blu ray format due to my problem with my eye and hand coordination! Many times I may rub the disc on the tray with damage to the surface of the disc in ordinary dvd disc! When I played the movie the restoration was very surprising! I mean the audio was clear and the video was sharp with no distortion whatsoever!! Too bad there was no color in those days to see how those actors such as Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Lionel Barrymore and all of the other actors looked? I view these movies as treasures for future generations to view!I hope that more old movies will be formatted into blu ray for my collection/ library of movies to enjoy??Thank you Bolo for listing this movie in your inventory!! Jean Harlow's final film. The last few scenes were filmed by a "double." Race-track melodrama/comedy with Clark Gable as a gambler trying towoo Harlow away from prospective fiance' Walter Pidgeon. Good Lionel Barrymore co-starring performance as Jean's grandfather. Dated butstill reasonably entertaining. Interesting to see a somewhat youngish Gable as the "rouge" with a tender heart and a strong sense of loyalty tohis friends. Jean Harlow's health was not the best as evidenced by her premature death at 27 years of age. Her appearance in the film, if youlook closely, shows the decline in appearance and health as she waged a battle to complete this picture. See it. Succeeds on many levels.

I just love the Harlow Gable teaming up thingy that they did during their heyday. She was a little whippersnapper and Gable's mischievous nature worked to create a nice chemistry. It didn't matter to me what the plot was about. I enjoyed the film because of the star players.

A "show" for film or Harlow buffs only. Cookie cutter plot "breezes" along but is never "fast" fun. At the finish line, you're more interested in picking out Harlow's doubles than the actual movie. Gable is good (Honey, I love ya) plus it's always fun to look at the "stable" of MGM bit part actors. Seeing Agnes Moorehead and Frank Morgan on the train is my pick of the day! Their trip to Oz was only a few years away.Watching Harlow is a good "bet" too due to some eerie lines (Goodbye and I could just die) so this makes Saratoga a curio in itself. However, this movie isn't a "winner" but more an also-ran. Lionel Barrymore finishes strong with some good lines but it's Una Merkel who comes home the winner: We women can do things to a man we love that men wouldn't do to a rattlesnake.

Gable and Harlow made magic with their natural chemistry in every movie that they made together. Add Frank Morgan to any movie and it just gets better. Saratoga is a mystical place and this movie captures the Horses, Health and History theme that is Saratoga Springs, NY. It celebrates the oldest race track in the country (celebrating 150 years this year) and the game that made the city famous throughout the world. There are no Gables or Harlows today. They were true Hollywood stars. Saratoga was a perfect fit for them.

great movie includes some wonderful period scenes of Saratoga Springs NY and the Saratoga Race Course. The cast is terrific and the transfer from original(?) to DVD is good, despite some dust and scratches visible in the opening credits. It was a bit of a wait to get it delivered but it was delivered within the time frame promised so no real fault there. The price seemed a bit high but it's one of my favorite movies and I've looked quite awhile for it in DVD so in the end it was worth it.

Saratoga (1937) est entré dans la légende puisque Jean Harlow est décédée durant son tournage obligeant la MGM à utiliser une doublure pour plusieurs scènes qui n'avaient pas encore été tournées. L' associant une nouvelle fois à un Clark Gable au sommet de sa séduction, le film de Jack Conway ne s'inscrit pas au niveau de réussites comme Red Dust ou Wife versus secretary tant son scénario marie difficilement le marivaudage entre une fille à papa et un parieur invétéré avec les us et les pratiques du monde hippique. Néanmoins le film demeure hautement recommandable tant par sa splendide direction artistique (une force de la MGM) signée Cédric Gibbons que par sa distribution aux petits oignons au nombre de laquelle figurent Lionel Barrymore, Walter Pigeon, Frank Morgan et Una Merkel. D'une durée de 90 minutes, cet import espagnol est disponible en vo uniquement (ronflement gênant pénalisant par intermittence les dialogues) mais avec une image globalement très acceptable.
