Le Combat Dans L'ile

Description:

RADIANCE PRESENTS THIS CLASSIC FRENCH FILM NOIR WRITTEN BY LOUIS MALLE MAKING ITS DEBUT ON BLU-RAY IN THIS SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION.

Clement (Jean-Louis Trintignant, Il sorpasso) is a wealthy son of an industrialist who lives a secret life as a right-wing terrorist. Double-crossed following an assassination attempt he flees to the countryside with his wife, Anne (Romy Schneider, La piscine) where they stay with his childhood friend, Paul (Henri Serre, Jules et Jim). Clement plots his revenge but Anne falls for Paul and a love triangle is just one of many complications in this multi-layered discovery from the French New Wave. With the support of producer Louis Malle, Alain Cavalier (Fill 'Er Up with Super) directed his debut, a noirish drama beautifully shot by cinematographer Pierre Lhomme (Army of Shadows). While echoing the political turmoil of the 1960s, the film probes bourgeois values and the relationship between sex and violence, acting as a precursor to The Conformist and demonstrating the influence of Chabrol.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Romy Schneider Fans!

C.M. · February 3, 2012

My favorite Romy Schneider movies are the ones that she made in the fifties in Austria and Germany and in the sixties in France. This is one of the better movies from the early sixties when she was still engaged to French superstar Alain Delon living and working in France."Le combat dans l'ile" is even today very watchable (something I cannot say about her later French movies with Michel Piccoli or Yves Montand). I watched it several times over the past three decades and still love it.Definitely 5 stars!Another tip: "Purple Noon" aka "Plein soleil" with Alain Delon from 1960, the best Ripley adaptation based on Patricia Highsmith's 5 Ripley novels. Although Romy is only in one short scene, I still would like to recommend this unforgettable French masterpiece by René Clément.[...]The score is very haunting.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pretty black and white suspense film

A pretty black and white suspense film. Good, not great. I think it would have been improved by eliminating the narration.

2.0 out of 5 stars Deux calvados s'ilvous plait, Mousieur, je fait le Combat contre-- L'Ennui!

C. · March 30, 2014

Good actors wasted on unreal characters, empty script. Soundtrack sounds like heating system gone bad. Disappointment. There is no 'Combat' because the characters are not real. Romy great to look at, as always. Final duel is pretty awful, no tension. Mozart comes off fine, but then he is Mozart.

2.0 out of 5 stars The film is not what the title suggest

The story, acting and cinematography are fair, yet the whole is less than the sum of the parts. It left me unsure where "The Combat" was supposed to be.
