Bobbie B. The Untold Story of A.A.'s "Fantastic Communicator"

Description:

Step back in time when A.A. was so new and small that their Headquarters carried an unlisted phone number. The only way most "prospects" could contact this new recovery phenomenon was through the mail. From 1942 through mid-1949, Bobbie answered thousands of written requests from all over the world, which earned her love and respect from many A.A.s she would never meet. She was the only alcoholic employed there until 1946. She also carefully protected Bill W.'s reputation during periods when news of his difficulties might have jeopardized the future of Alcoholics Anonymous. Previously unknown letters written by Bill showing his gratitude for Bobbie's contributions are documented here for the first time after being hidden away for seventy years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bobbie B. Remembered

Thank you for bringing the contributions of AA National Secretary Bobbie B. to light. So many of the women who contributed to the growth of Alcoholics Anonymous are lost to the dustbin of history. The Neidhardt biography restores Bobbie's rightful place in the early history of AA, especially her work in helping AA groups in Australia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Information, Mind Numbing Writing Style

C.N. · October 24, 2024

I have not yet finished the book, but can already say that the information about Bobbie B. and AA's early development is incredible. As an AA member who loves the history of AA, I am enthralled by the information, heretofore unknown to me, that is brought to light through Bobbie's story. My only complaint is the author's writing style. The extensive use of footnotes--and I mean EXTENSIVE--makes it almost impossible to enjoy the story. Author would have done much better to weave all the footnoted info into the story telling; it would have made the story that much more compelling. It almost seems like the author was trying to take the lazy man's route to writing a book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Important story very badly written

N. · October 18, 2025

To my knowledge Bobbie B. is considered a founder of AA down under. I was very interested in her story which turned out to be tragic. Unfortunately the author has absolutely no written narrative skill. In hindsight I wish he had the humility to admit this shortcoming and engage a ghost writer for the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars print quality lacking

For approximately half of the book, the text on the left side of the righthand page is missing the first two or three letters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic AA History

Great job by Author, telling about a fantastic story that needs to be told!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Portrayal of the AA Headquarters in the 1940s, many situations Bill never wrote about.

C.J. · March 14, 2024

In the past few years we have been blessed with four outstanding books that have told us more about the early years of Alcoholics Anonymous than Bill Wilson ever did. Gary's scholarly research, pouring over 1000's of letters from the GSO Archives and from Bobbie's family, has revealed a number of stories about problems that threatened early AA. Bobbie wrote the majority of these letters. Her desk was the "anvil" of experience on which AA's Twelve Traditions were pounded out. In detailing these episodes, Gary helps us to understand why Bill Wilson found it necessary to write Twelve Points to Assure AA's Future. The Twelve Traditions were born out of this 1946 AA Grapevine article. Thank you Gary!
