5.0 out of 5 stars Zalantan Fountain Pen (Matte Black): Elegant, Affordable, and Smooth with Minor Ink Quirks
Zalantan Fountain Pen (Fine Nib, Matte Black, 10 Ink Cartridges): A Sleek, Budget-Friendly Choice with Minor QuirksI recently picked up the Zalantan Fountain Pen (Fine Nib, Matte Black) with 10 black ink cartridges and an ink converter for my daily journaling and note-taking, and it’s a solid performer for the price. This pen offers an elegant design and smooth writing experience, making it a great option for beginners or as a gift, though it has some minor inconsistencies that keep it from perfection.Design and Build: 4.5/5The Zalantan fountain pen looks and feels premium, with a matte black stainless steel body and a glossy piano lacquer finish that’s resistant to fading and wear. At 36 grams, it’s nicely weighted—substantial enough to feel luxurious but not so heavy as to cause hand fatigue during long writing sessions. The ergonomic design fits comfortably in my hand, and the iridium-tipped fine nib adds a touch of sophistication. The included gift box is a nice bonus, making it an ideal present for writers or students, as many Bolo reviewers noted, with one calling it “a classy gift for my son’s graduation.” My only nitpick is that the matte finish attracts fingerprints, but a quick wipe with a soft cloth keeps it looking sharp.Writing Performance: 4/5When it’s flowing, this pen is a delight. The fine nib glides smoothly across paper, producing crisp, consistent lines perfect for journaling, sketching, or signing documents. The included 3.4mm black ink cartridges provide rich, dark ink that dries quickly, minimizing smudging. A reviewer on Bolo raved, “The pen writes smoothly with no skips, and the ink flow is perfect for calligraphy practice.” However, I occasionally experienced ink flow issues, particularly after refilling, where the pen needed a shake or a few seconds with the nib down to start writing. This matches some user feedback about “splattering” or “no ink flow” until adjusted. Switching to a fresh cartridge usually fixed it, but it suggests minor quality control issues with the feed or cartridges.Ease of Use and Refilling: 4/5The pen is user-friendly, especially for beginners. Installing the included cartridges is simple—push until you hear a click—and the converter allows for bottled ink, offering flexibility. However, the 3.4mm cartridge size isn’t universal, limiting you to Zalantan’s refills or compatible brands, which can be a hassle. The converter works well but requires thorough cleaning to avoid clogs, which took me a couple of tries to master. The instructions are clear but brief, and I relied on YouTube tutorials for tips on refilling and maintenance. Once set up, it’s low-maintenance, but first-time fountain pen users might need a bit of patience.Versatility and Gifting: 5/5This pen is versatile enough for various tasks—journaling, calligraphy, note-taking, or professional signatures. Its sleek design suits both casual and formal settings, and the fine nib is precise for detailed writing or small handwriting. The gift box and included cartridges make it a thoughtful present, with customers praising its “luxury look for a budget price.” I’ve used it for both quick notes and longer creative writing, and it feels reliable in most scenarios. It’s not a professional-grade calligraphy pen, but it handles basic flourishes well, especially with the included converter for specialty inks.Value for Money: 4.5/5At around $15–$25 (based on Bolo listings), the Zalantan fountain pen is a steal for its premium look and performance. It competes well with other budget-friendly brands like Jinhao or Pilot Metropolitan, offering a similar experience at a lower cost than high-end pens like Parker or Lamy. With a 4.7-star average from Bolo reviews, users love its value, with one stating, “For the price, you can’t beat the quality and smoothness.” The included 10 cartridges and converter add to the deal, though the occasional ink flow issues and non-standard cartridge size slightly reduce its overall value. The satisfaction guarantee is a plus, with responsive customer service for replacements if needed.Final Verdict: The Zalantan Fountain Pen (Fine Nib, Matte Black) is a stylish, affordable option for anyone dipping their toes into fountain pens or seeking a reliable daily writer. Its elegant design, comfortable grip, and smooth performance make it great for journaling, gifting, or professional use. While minor ink flow issues and non-standard cartridges can be frustrating, they’re manageable with proper setup. I recommend this pen for beginners or budget-conscious writers looking for a touch of luxury without the high price tag. Just be prepared to troubleshoot occasional ink hiccups and stock up on compatible refills.
5.0 out of 5 stars Build well, write smooth, like a Wall Street signature tool
HelloAs an “old timer” I missed the feel of the fountain pen. After several let down brands, fund this one.The built quality is excellent, elegant, and the most important, write even, smooth, without scratching or braking in the line. The weight of the pen is ok, (wish it would be heavier a bit) but it’s ok for most people.Guess what: for the price of this pen, I also receive an extra tip head besides the ink fills . I have not tried yet, but I assume that line thickness of the writing is differ.Overall, all I can say is WoW !!!Worth every pennies.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love this pen!
I used a fountain pen way back when I was in high school (They were in vogue then), but hadn't used one since until now. I absolutely love this pen. It can take ink cartridges (easiest) or be filled from a bottle of ink (also not hard). My only issue, which I figured out on my own, was the lack of an instructional video to show which parts to remove to use the cartridges. The pen is a beautiful color, very elegant, and writes smoothly. Well worth the price. I've ordered a second one to give as a Christmas gift.
4.0 out of 5 stars Ok but need better quality control.
It weighs good but the clip on the cap is loose and has scratched off the paint. I'm worried that the clip will break off. Over all a good pin for work I'm in security and is writing a lot for my reports.
5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful buy!! Worth every penny
I’ve had this on my wish list forever. I love fountain pens and this one is so pretty, a good weight and writes beautifully. My only issue is that it came with something I have no idea what it is or how to use it and no directions or explanation, not worth removing a star for though because I love this pen and it comes with plenty of refills which is much appreciated. I’m so happy I finally ordered it!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Ball point pens no more.
Great pen. I got tired of the hit and miss of ball point pens so I decided to try a fountain pen , and the difference is unbelievable. After writing with this pen I have thrown out all my ball points and ordered extra fountain pens. This is the beginning of a new writing journey.
1.0 out of 5 stars I was not able to use it.
The cap had some plastic thing inside it that would not come out, preventing capping the pen. I was looking forward to writing with it and was disappointed, as the ink didn't flow into the nib. I tried to find a solution on line, but nothing helped. I'll give it aother try, so I'll see.
3.0 out of 5 stars Good pen, crappy instructions, some cartridges are defective
The picture on the instructions doesn’t label parts, but just so you know, the set comes with two extemporaneous parts to make conversions to the instrument. One such extra, needless part comes attached to the tip/nib, which makes assembly even more confusing. I tried to do the intuitive thing of just removing the extra part and attaching the ink cartridge to the tip/nib (basic stuff- but not at all depicted properly in the illustration or instructions), but it didn’t work. Why? The first ink cartridge I tried appears to have been poorly manufactured/defective, and the opening was way too narrow so that I would have broken something trying to force the two parts together. Having not realized that it was a single defective cartridge, just seeing pieces that didn’t fit together, I reached out for help in the questions and an unhelpful person descended upon the question to mock and insult me rather than offer any helpful suggestions that would have lead to me realizing that I should try a different cartridge to see that I had a defective cartridge. I will probably make a video to demonstrate how to put it together properly so other people are also able to avoid this confusion and the possibility that some of their ink cartridges may also be poorly manufactured and defective. Now that we put a different cartridge in, it writes beautifully. I bought it for my son’s 10th birthday so he could practice his penmanship. He has been begging me for one. He absolutely loves it now that we got it working. It’s an incredible value for the money. The seller needs to check the manufacturing of their cartridges.
Great pen
Great for the money works as it should
Hope other customers had better experience.
The pen cap didn't close, its fine nib (in reality it's medium) leaked ink, and the ink didn't flow well enough to write with its very fine nib. Return requested.Given it two stars for the additional items, very thoughtful. It's a shame, if one of the nibs had worked properly I would have kept it.
