5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent paint and sculpt!

    P. · October 20, 2023

The media could not be loaded. 2023/24 Mattel Jurassic World Epic Evolution “Strike Attack” TuojiangosaurusFor the first couple of years of Mattel producing Jurassic World figures, their only stegosaurid figure was the namesake Stegosaurus. More members of the family eventually made their debut, and we collectors soon saw our 5th Stegosaur with the release of the Gigantspinosaurus earlier in 2023. Mattel is going all in on the Stegosaurian family with Epic Evolution. The latest Jurassic toy line features three new Stegosaur species, starting with this beauty from Late Jurassic China: Tuojiangosaurus! There is quite a bit of detail packed into the sculpt. Mattel usually does a decent job with their Stegosaurids, and this one is no exception. The head is so small that it doesn’t have much in the way of scale detail. However, there are still lots of great touches to bring it to life. The mouth is sculpted in an open position, and you can see the tongue inside the prominent beak. The nostrils are sculpted in, and there is some nice wrinkling around the beak. The skull is very shrink wrapped, as is the case with most Jurassic figures. There are some fine scales along the brow ridges and on the top of the head. The jawline is well defined, and a bit bulged. This gives the Tuojiangosaurus some slightly chubby cheeks, almost like the baby stegosaurus from The Lost World. The neck is fairly long. This is where the scalation detail begins to ramp up. There are some nice bumpy scales along the back of the neck, while the lower half is more wrinkled. The plates along the back of the neck are textured very nicely as well. There is some veining separating the throat from the upper neck, and there is some nice sagging skin detail on the throat. The body is where most of the scales reside. Nearly the entire body is covered in pebbly scales. The large, spiky back plates have excellent keratinous texturing. There is a hint of the rib cage along the sides, and some large veining separating the body and the belly. The underside is pretty light on details, which is typical of these smaller Mattel figures. However, there are some nice wrinkles on the belly of this one.The limbs hold the body high off the ground. The legs are well muscled, and actually feature some of the most crisp scale detail on the entire figure. The feet are a bit large, especially in the rear, but they’re not terrible. The tail is decently long, but could have been a bit longer. The level of detail is comparable to the neck of the figure. The plates and thagomizer spikes are particularly impressive. They actually feel like they are organically growing from the tail, rather than being an afterthought. They have a nice keratinous look to them too.Mattel has really upped their game on the colorations of these smaller figures. The Epic Evolution line keeps the biome specific color schemes introduced in the previous Dino Trackers line. This Tuojiangosaurus is given a mountain environment, much like the Dino Trackers Stegosaurus. The two share a fairly similar color scheme as well. There is some fantastic paint applications here. The only issue I have is the way the darker coloration ends at the neck. I wish just a splash of the darker paint had been applied to the neck to give it a more natural cutoff. The cutoff of the dark paint is much better at the tail. I still would have preferred a bit of the dark paint in the tail as well, but the ending point does feel much more natural here. The eyes are also painted nicely, but I’m disappointed in the pupils. Not only are the pupils unpainted, but they’re also predatory vertical slit pupils. These are two things that I thought Mattel had moved past, but I guess they still haven’t learned in that regard. Herbivores need either round pupils, or horizontal slits! In a more positive note, I am incredibly happy to see that all of the back plates are painted beautifully! This is something I’ve complained about for every Stegosaur so far, so I am very grateful that the issue has finally been remedied with the Tuojiangosaurus! The thagomizers, on the other hand, are still neglected, but at least we got the back plates!Articulations on this one are pretty minimal. The head can only rotate at the base of the neck. There is no other movement on the neck at all. The front legs only move forward and back in a ratcheted motion. Both of these limitations are due to the mechanics of the action features, but more on that in a bit.The rear legs can also move forward and back, but have a more traditional smooth articulation. None of the legs have an outward swivel motion, which is also due to the action gimmick. The tail has some movement, but it is completely tied to the action feature. So, what is the action feature? Well, Mattel has taken the mechanics of the Jurassic World Dominion electronic figures, and applied it to the “Strike Attack” assortment this time. By that, I mean that the legs are the activation point for the action gimmick. You simply press down on the body of the figure, which causes the tail to swing around. The action itself is pretty nice. However, I was never a fan of this activation method. While I appreciate the simplicity, the mechanics of the action severely limits articulations. It’s not a great trade off, in my opinion.Issues with the articulation aside, I am very pleased with this figure. I love the sculpt, and the paint scheme is fantastic! It’s also great to have another stegosaurian addition to the lineup. Now that I have my first Epic Evolution figure in hand, I am even more excited to see what this line will bring us in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect birthday gift for dinosaur fans!

I got this for my nephew’s birthday, and he absolutely loved it! The Kaprosuchus dinosaur toy is so detailed and well-made. The single strike action and movable joints make it super fun to play with, and it’s the perfect size for little hands. He also enjoyed the digital play feature, which added an extra layer of excitement. Highly recommend for any Jurassic World fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kaprosuchus is easily the star of Epic Evolution Strike Attack wave one!

    B. · November 14, 2023

Kaprosuchus isn't a dinosaur, before you ask, but a prehistoric relative of crocodiles. It's also not quite as fanciful and extreme as the Mattel toy might have you believe, a common theme among the original sculpts of species that aren't based on existing media. What it is at least is yet another cool and desirable entry in the series that kids, fans, and collectors are sure to enjoy. The jaw gimmick is activated not by a button or tail but by pressing the figure down when standing on a surface, or pressing either foreleg up if handheld, and it's not a bad chomping action as a result. The front legs do have articulation, but with heavy detents, so they only hold certain wider positions rather than spin freely like the back legs or most others on Mattel dinosaurs can. So long as you keep that in mind, you should definitely enjoy this little guy, who will absolutely stand out in the otherwise sea of two-legged carnivores most people buying these probably have in droves. Perfect to add to your Cretaceous displays or with the smattering of non-dinosaur, non-pterosaur terrestrial monsters that are few and far between in the Mattel Jurassic line.

The strike attack dinosaurs are overall well designed and sturdy. They're also generally paleo-accurate, showing that Mattel is really doing their research! They also have a tendency to stand out among other paleo-art designs thanks to the strategic use of bright colors and highlights that aren't too commonly seen in paleoart, even in the 21t century.
