5.0 out of 5 stars Timely and practical
Great book! Timely and practical. The of Agency comes up more and more frequently during coaching discussions with clients. I will good use of the resources.
5.0 out of 5 stars Autonomy x Authority x Leadership = Agency = Individual and Organizational Success!
The Power of Agency is the latest in a long set of great books on how to build inclusive, positive organizational culture by Fred Miller and Judith Katz. It builds on the many tools given in their previous books: moving from judging to joining, inclusion of all people of all identities builds the most positive and most productive organizations; be big and bold to best improve yourself and your organization; their four keys that change everything (lean into discomfort, listen as an ally, communicate your intent and intensity for your ideas, and share your perspective); creating interaction safety; and building a positive narrative that takes you to the change you need. All those tools are employed to build Agency: “Ensuring that all people, of all roles, levels, tenure, and identities, have the power, influence, and voice to make choices and decisions related to their jobs and the betterment of their organizations.”The book is a fast read that merits a slow re-read afterwards. It is set up in three sections, the first defining and describing Agency, the second on the process to change organizational culture to unleash agency, and the third, effectively a workbook by organizational roles at all levels to cultivate agency in yours. This is a wonderful book that will help you bring out the most in yourself, your team, and your organization. I took it to the end of the world – literally in southern Argentina – and highly recommend it!
5.0 out of 5 stars Immediate approaches to be better and feel good about yourself in today's professional setting
This book provides such great insight on how to take practical steps to be a person manager with intention and kindness while in a performance oriented environment. I really appreciated the clear definition of the concept of agency in the third chapter, since these terms are sometimes thrown around without definition. By using a whole chapter to define the concept, including what agency looks like in action, Miller and Katz help take what could be jargon and make it real and compelling. Thanks so much to the authors for creating this valuable resource. Highly recommend!
5.0 out of 5 stars Clearly lays out the benefits of agency in the workplace - and the price of lack of agency
Miller and Katz masterfully use stories, logic, and examples to show why individual agency is so important in any organization. They talk about how today's world is evolving fast. But many organizations are extremely unwieldy. It can take months for proposals to be drafted, revised, and approved by multiple levels of management. (I have seen this first-hand, even in a small nonprofit!) This sluggishness severely hurts companies' ability to innovate and adaptThe problem, they diagnose, is a lack of agency. In many organizations, decisions are being made one, two, or three levels higher than they need to be. The people on the front lines or at the lowest levels are often the ones who have the right information and expertise to solve problems and move the company forward. But they routinely lack the agency to be able to express or implement their ideas, without the ideas getting bogged down in bureaucratic approval processes.Fred and Miller explain that when you shift the decision-making downward, and reduce the number of people who need to approve plans, then the organization can move and pivot faster. Employees also feel greater work satisfaction, and there is higher retention.Highly recommend for any manager or leader!
5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
There is so much to love in The Power of Agency. Judith and Fred have written another smart and easily accessible book, this time about agency is, why it is important, and how to create an organizational culture that unleashes agency in your org. In today's labor market, orgs can't afford to take their employees for granted at any level, for any reason, nor can they undermine their creativity and ability to take action. This book explains how to unleash agency in your organization. I highly recommend The Power of Agency for every leader, manager, employee, HR person, and change agents everywhere.
5.0 out of 5 stars Arrived just in time.
This is the book that I needed to have with me for the time I will have during this holiday season to read and to give as a gift to my clients, colleagues and friends. What I like most about 'The Power of Agency - Cultivating Autonomy, Authority, and Leadership in Every Role' is the directness and tools included in the book to coach the behaviors for creating agency throughout the entire organization. In a world where the workplace landscape has changed dramatically with organizations working remotely, in a hybrid model and face-to-face and everything in between creating a climate and culture where clarity of roles, relationship and expectations is essential. Frederick Miller and Judith Katz have designed a book that acts like a workbook for co-creating a plan with your organization and teams. I am happily turning the pages today.
5.0 out of 5 stars Take Back Control: A Practical Guide to Personal Agency

A must-read for anyone looking to navigate life with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.
