These are solid shoes with good traction. They need virtually no break-in. I had to get 1/2 larger than the largest shoe I have ever purchased before. They are marketed as trail running shoes, and for rough terrain, that may be good choice. I prefer them as solid, low-top hiking shoes. My first hike using these shoes was in Zion for 26,000 steps walking about 13 miles. I wore them with a pair of Darn-good socks and my feet were happy afterwards, no blisters, hot-spots, or sore feet. The sole is solid and one does not feel any projections from the terrain.

I had the previous version of the Spire GTX and wore it out before it ever fell apart. They were great. The new version is very similar but a bit different. I purchased the new version because I couldn't find the old version. Five weeks later and about 50 easy miles after purchase, I started hearing noise from the midsole on every step; regardless of terrain. Nothing is loose outside, so it's already got some internal delamination problems. Very disappointed in the quality on this newer style.
