52 Weeks: Because giving up is not an option

Description:

With a terminal diagnosis her life will never be the same again. Against the odds, will she make the right decisions?

Poignant, moving yet very funny!

After the return of her cancer, Beryl has been given a year to live. In other writer's hands this could be a grim story full of misery but Barry Lillie's novel is, instead, filled with humour and Stokie warmth.A must-read and a great candidate for the Arnold Bennett prize.

A brilliant read

A brilliant read. What could be a sad subject is brought to life in a humorous way through the experiences of Beryl, her family and friends. I felt as if I knew these people and could share their heart-warming journey. An excellent book. I shall definitely be reading more from this author.

Great book exploring friendship for a lady given 52 weeks to Live. It is sad and happy in the space of seconds. I found it uplifting. Beryl has a happy marriage and loyal friends that help her thought this time.Beryl has been given %2 weeks to live from a cancer diagnosis. But, Beryl is determined to make this a good time. She has a bucket list of things she wants to do Like go to Venice which she does.Naturally there is sadness but this is but happiness does appear. Mundan things happen like trying to buy a new blouse or dunking biscuits in tea. This book supprised me and I may read more of this author. I read the book as it was down to the final book in the Arnold Bennett Society books of the year for this year.

A heart-warming read.

When Beryl Bickerstaff receives the bad news about her prognosis she is determined not to let it get her down. What time she has left, she will enjoy to the best of her ability, not in any dramatic way but by saying “Yes” to any new experience that presents itself and above all savouring the daily details of life, like shopping for a new blouse with her friend Vera, dunking biscuits in tea, or going to admire a neighbour’s new carpet.Written in first person, all this is told with Beryl’s wry sense of humour. Her views on what is going on around her is one of the delights of this novel, as is the depiction of the other characters all of whom are totally convincing. I love Len, her stoic ever supportive husband and her scatty friend Vera who never fails whatever the occasion to come out with a completely inappropriate remark. Equally well done is the way in which Beryl’s family deal with their grief and her own acceptance of the fact that her life will be shorter than she had hoped. All this is done with such a light hand that the book never becomes mawkish or morbid. I was especially impressed by the way in which the author managed to show the progression of Beryl’s disease without overwhelming the reader with gruesome facts.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In spite of the subject it is a truly heart-warming and up-lifting read. Barry Lillie treads the line between comedy and tragedy in such an accomplished way that I laughed through my tears and will always think of Beryl with a smile.

Excellent book
