Great movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Cute and Funny

M. · January 20, 2024

Definitely glad I bought this. The Marvels secured a spot in one of the top Marvel movies for me. Warning, this is a feel good movie so if you are looking for gritty and dark that takes itself way too seriously then this isn’t the movie for you. A slight criticism is I thought the villain was a bit underwhelming and kinda forgettable. Not a criticism of the actress but the writers, costume designer, and director. She really seemed like an afterthought to the plot. On the other hand, the trio had great chemistry, and Kamala (Iman Vellani) stole the show. Her comedic timing was great as she embodied what a teenage girl would be like thrown into “saving the galaxy with your idol” situation. Worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kamala steals the show, raises the movie from blah to charming

J. · April 9, 2024

The baddie is utterly forgettable, the plot is seriously contrived, it ends up being mostly just light and fun - though the characters are a little all over the place and I think the writing is a little muddled since (maybe? I think) they tried to do a fun bright / emotional drama / new something pattern to the movie and the "emotional drama" parts just ... don't hit. At all. And they're basically glossed over even by the characters themselves while they're having them. Now the characters... Kamala has serious charisma and is the highlight of the movie by far, I mean *by farrrrrr*. That's awesome for the actress (congrats!) ... but it's a bit frustrating when the teen actress is out acting / out charming / out charactering / out everything-ing all the adult actors in the rest of the movie.Photon is mostly... just there. Which takes away from the final act. She's someone you could both like and side with as she's built as a smart and more relatable character (with more understandable personal experiences - loss of family, people not being there for her in general, along with all the new powers / new world usual tropes) She could be a really grounded and interesting character - if she ever got to be more than a foil for other leading ladies. She almost got to be in WandaVision... if they gave her any lines or, well, anything to work with in this movie I'd have been interested.Brie is ... why do they have her be so damn stone faced? I am not one of those a-holes who says "she'd be so much prettier if she smiled" (gag) but let her have a regular expression! A chance to *be* someone (at all!) She's the main character and she's allowed the range of an angry grapefruit, it hurts. I don't know if that's just poor usage, or some weird belief that really powerful people have to be deeply broken inside or ... what, but it's killing these movies. Stone faced bad mothers have their place in action flicks... but they don't seem to be trying to make that sort of flick. I mean, the bright colors, constant bad jokes and, you know - *dance scenes* imply something at least slightly different was the goal.Though now I kinda want to see Arnie / Stallone / etc doing the stone faced killer thing and then have to dance and sing too.Oh well - still one of the better marvel releases in a while - just light and mostly forgettable when it could have been a lot more.Oh - random last thought - I was really happy to see more Fury. He doesn't fit the character developed through his recent show at all - if you've seen that. If you haven't seen it? He's fine, mostly used as comic relief which again... just like the rest of everything, is light and fun... but could have been so much more.Even with the style - he could have used at least one decent moment-of-awesome in the movie, definitely *not* saving the main heroines (at least they didn't do that) - but maybe something cool with the family or something, the man's earned a nice scene or two.Ok - have fun! Go in with light expectations and it's a nice run, good fun, some silliness, some music based fighting, some shenanigans, *lots* of pretty flashing lights and ... I think there was a baddie? maybe? was there? ... hmmm... sooo forgettable...

Love the movie

3.0 out of 5 stars Undervalued sequel that is better than audiences response to it.

W.K. · February 19, 2024

A surprisingly entertaining and light film that got slammed by viewers and some critics at the time, I can only suspect the hate is due to Marvel fatigue (no, not the character). Despite a narratively muddled first act, the film is pretty fun.The destruction of the Supreme Intelligence on Kree causes their own to be in peril. The new leader of the Kree named Dar-Benn. She is determined to find the Quantum Bands. Legend has it that it can open Quantum portals that will allow her to restore her world. Because Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) destroyed the Supreme Intelligence at the end of the first film, Captain Marvel is in her sights as well.Meanwhile, Marvel, Ms. marvel and Monica Rambeau become quantum entangled exchanging places whenever they use their power which leads to a comical attempt to fight off the bad guys.Although the tonal shifts can be a bit abrupt at times, the film is a lighter romp similar to some of the more recent Marvel films. It’s also quite a bit of fun if uneven. There is a Bollywood inspired sequence that is quite funny and fun as well.It does feel like the film was trimmed to tighten up the narrative but that sacrifices some of the background and prevents further character development for the under developed villain (a problem that some of the Marvel films suffer from). The reality is that it feels as if two narratives were put together from two different films. A lot of post-production tinkering feels like that went on as well. The 4K and Blu-ray look top notch here. A 2K intermediate was used for the final version prepared theatrically and that’s likely used here as well. Fine detail is still top notch if this upscaled. The streaming version also looks quite good as well. The Atmos mix sounds terrific. The 7.1 mix is terrific. Overall, Disney has stepped up their game with the A/V presentations of their films. The special features include a commentary track from the director, deleted scenes, a gag reel, a production featurette that’s pretty light. The commentary is only on both discs included with the rest of the special features on the Blu-ray.A light, frothy and surprisingly fun (even though there is a threat to Earth and there’s the potential for death to others), “The Marvels” is far better than its reputation and deserved better at the box office subtracted from all the political nonsense from the right.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Movie

This was a great movie that I quite enjoyed. While it was definitely not as good as the original "Captain Marvel," I never expect sequels to rise to that level. The movie nicely tied in the TV series of the young Ms. Marvel, and also left some rather interesting possibilities for a tie-in with the X-Men in the future. I also really enjoyed the cats/Flerken.
