5.0 out of 5 stars I still remember listening to this LP on the day it was released nearly 45 years ago
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } In early August, 1968, I arrived in London for a year's stay. The day that I arrived, I made sure to go to the famous Marquee Club that I had heard so much about in the US during the previous 3 to 4 years. When I arrived at the club, I found out that the headline act was the Spencer Davis Group (with Ray Fenwick, Eddie Hardin and Pete York). I went inside to listen to the opening act and I was very impressed. The band did some really amazing Beatles and Byrds covers, and their original material was excellent as well. When I asked someone next to me the name of the band, they replied "Yes." According to what I've been able to track down online, this was one of their very first public appearances!Fast forward to almost a year later - July 25, 1969...Three important LPs were released on that day: Jethro Tull's "Stand Up", Blodwyn Pig's "Ahead Rings Out", and the very 1st album by Yes. I went to the local record shop and asked to listen to the Yes LP in one of the audition booths. From the opening notes of the first track, I knew that I was listening to something very special. Also, it was exciting to listen to the cover songs ("Every Little Thing" and "I See You") that I had heard them perform at the Marquee the previous year. Within the hour, I had purchased the LP and walked out of the shop clutching my prize under my arm.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Debut Album!
The year 1969 was obviously a great one for Rock. In that year we saw the first albums from Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and many other great groups. They were all ground breaking in some way and this debut album by Yes is no exception and maybe even more so than the others. What sets this album apart from the herd is that while other bands were keeping one foot in the waning psychedelic era of the late 60's, Yes was more forward thinking and with this album there were already sounds of what would become known as "Progressive Rock" which would include the likes of Emerson Lake & Palmer, King Crimson and Genesis. Some of what you hear on this album would in a few years become common place in the Prog Rock sound and Yes was among the first to devote themselves to it.I highly recommend this album to Yes fans and Prog fans alike.
4.0 out of 5 stars An intereting Mish-Mash
Truly not what I expected from Yes, but it is their first album after all and as the liner notes mention, they were truly clueless in the studio. It shows, but it's such a piece of Yes history it's still offers some fun to have a listen. "Survival" is the best track on the record. I also like some of the bonus cuts. Normally I don't like bonus tracks but these were actually cool.
5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome vintage 70's memories!!
Nice to have this on CD again. Loaned mine to a friend. Never returned.
5.0 out of 5 stars Yes takes sixties pop music to the next level
I remember whenI first heard Yes. It was the Yes Album tour. Rick Wakeman had joined the band. However, Fragile had not been released. They played the gym at Gettysburg College and I was sitting on the floor at the edge of the stage. I had not heard note one prior to the concert.Suddenly I had to get all of their recordings.Yes is the mix of the Beatleaque pop songs with an aggressive jazz reinterpretation. Yes is a combination of good songs and excellent musicianship. They really pushed the envelope on that score. Thank you Cream!I recommend this recording very highly!
5.0 out of 5 stars In the Beginning
Five stars for 5 English prog rockers covering all the bases (including Byrds, Beatles, and show tunes) on their first album. If only they had Carly Simon guest on a version of Nobody Does It Better (it's a fantasy ... Don't knock my hobbies). I have loved this album since first acquiring it in its vinyl first pressing. The CD remaster adds the show tunes versions, plus others. It is well worth the few dollars with which you have to part. In my opinion, YES was never more adventurous, nor better. Just to be clear, I prefer this line-up with Banks, Bruford, and Kaye on guitar, drums, and keys. Every Little Thing is a Beatles cover without equal.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Expanded Version of 1st YES Album
Yes' first album, excellent of course. Great guitar work from Peter Banks, Excellent Hammond and piano from Tony Kaye. Chris Squire rocks his bass as he always did. Bill Bruford so jazzy and cleaver. Jon Anderson in early voice brings it all together. Highly recommended,
4.0 out of 5 stars Historic recording
Having been a Yes fan since the beginning, I picked up this CD to fill out my digital collection of the Yes catalog, having acquired much of the early catalog on LP's beginning in the early 70's. This recording does not dissapoint. The alternate takes included on this CD make for a glimpse into what was going on in the band at the time and are fun to hear. I reccommend the CD.
I like this cd a lot
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This is Yes' first cd (album), with this cd we hear the beginning of a long lasting music career for this band because of their musical talent. This cd is full of great songs including: cover songs "I see you", "Every little thing" and their own songs like "Looking around", "Harold Land" and many more. All the members of Yes: Bill Bruford (drums), Tony Kaye (organ, piano), Peter Banks (guitar, vocals), Chris Squire (bass, vocals) and John Anderson the talented lead singer and percussionist. This is a great band that are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 2017. I recommend this cd.

it's where it's at, man
I love this album. I've always loved this album, ever since I first bought it on vinyl in 1978 from Our Price in London (and it was already nearly 10 years old then). This edition also brings us previously unheard versions of a couple of the early singles such as (my personal favourite) Dear Father - I now have 2 additional versions of this track to go with the one from the Yesterdays compilation. These unreleased versions are cleaner and less cluttered than the versions that appeared on later albums (such as Time and a Word) because they have no orchestral arrangements (which to me is a good thing, at least it's a fresh thing). It's tempting to compare this record to Yes' later work and see it as an early, undeveloped, nascent sound of what to come - but I think that is a mistake. The band that made this record is a very different group that recorded the 70s heavyweight progressive albums (not that there's anything wrong with them) and it's a universe away from the stadium AOR Trevor Rabin era (and there's a LOT wrong with that). This album stands on its own merits as a great example of late 60s pop/psychedelia, even wandering into jazz at times. Like the era it was recorded in it's joyful, optimistic and upbeat. It's about peace, love and long hair. The players are exactly the right ones for this sound. On this record we wouldn't want Steve Howe with his pedal steel, dobro and mandolin. We just want Peter Banks with his raw Rickenbacker six string. And we don't need Rick Wakeman (huge fan of his as I am) with his Moogs and Mellotron, we just want Tony Kaye with his valve-driven distorted Hammond. So if you are a child of the flower power era, buy this record. Don't see it as a debut, or a stepping stone to later greatness, enjoy it for what it is. Revel in the nostalgia and release your inner hippie.
