5.0 out of 5 stars Sprouts well!!

    J.S. · May 25, 2025

Bought this to sprout, and am satisfied with the results. I’m surprised the sprout seed retailers don’t offer this or have instructions to sprout it. It can be sprouted in a jar for just a few days or longer if you want green leaves like I do. 1 1/2 Tbs in a quart mason jar sprouter will fill the jar in 5-6 days. Urad, and moth also sprout nicely. I sprout equal parts mung, urad, and moth, 1 1/2 Tbs(total) will fill a quart mason jar in 5-6 days. Indian fennel is also an unknown sprout seed, extremely nice flavor, but grows very slowly, and delicately, try 3 Tbs in a quart mason jar sprouter.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Nice !

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of nutrients, also full time to prep!

I gave this bean a try because it has a taste that's a bit more zesty than regular beans and I like things a little different. Plus, it's very nutritious, much like nuts are, which it also has hints of in its flavor profile and I like that too. That being said, this stuff takes a serious amount of time and preparation to make a meal with it, especially without owning a pressure cooker. I'm talking about at least a day, split up half and half between soaking in water, and then waiting for it to begin to sprout. After which, it can be cooked just like lentils. The problem with that is that I am a day to day planner for my meals, so it's unfortunately not that user friendly for someone like me. So far, I just can't find any options that I can use to cook them the same day of my planned meal without investing into more equipment for doing so. If that's not a big deal, then I do recommend them, just have the time available for them. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tasty and versatile ancient lentil we don't often find in the U.S.

    S. · January 28, 2024

I was intrigued to try these horse gram, which are strong little lentils that keep their shape and "bite" even after a good long simmer on the stovetop. Intrigued to learn more about them, I discovered that they have been cultivated for centuries, often as a food for livestock, but also enjoyed by humans throughout rural regions of India. However, it is not often found in urban areas of the country, much less in the U.S. (except that you can now buy them on Bolo, of course!)It's a shame this type of lentil is not better known, because they are quite tasty. I prepared them according to a traditional recipe I found online involving plenty of green chile and onions cooked with the lentils and a tomato sauce spiced with cumin and mustard seeds. Delicious! These lentils are also a good source of fiber (16 whopping grams per serving!) and protein (12 grams per serving).Like so many varieties of the humble legume, these horse gram/lentils are big on nutritional content and flavor. I am glad to add these to my pantry and will seek them out again when this bag is empty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to cook and guaranteed to keep you full!

    . · January 23, 2024

No complaints, these are extremely good! Horse gram is especially great to try due to its sky high protein content (12 g of protein per cup!), so ideal for more and longer satiety. Preparation is simple, these cook better in a pressure cooker but it comes out just as good boiling on the stove. Seasoning doesn't particularly need to be from Indian cuisine, I seasoned these just fine with some cracked black pepper, butter, sea salt, and garlic. Just to hint that you truly need to dedicate time to wash these thoroughly before cooking because after 3 rinses, I could still unfortunately feel some sand. Besides that, these are a great find!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting thing to try

    J. · February 23, 2024

I had never heard of these before seeing them on Vine. They are very interesting. The nutrition profile is top-notch, with lots of fiber and protein. I cooked them like beans with a good long soak and it worked pretty well. I found them a little difficult to get fully soft. The flavor is interesting. I'm going to try different seasonings and cooking methods to see what is possible. Overall I think these are pretty cool and well worth trying.

Horse gram is so much lesser known than lentils but I find it better in taste and its protein content is amazing.Anyone who needs extra protein should have horse gram handy.I like to soak it overnight, but let me give a little warning, it needs to be washed really well. It's best to wash it a couple of times before using it. I then wash it again after soaking.I like this horse gram a lot, it was so worth trying. One thing though, I cannot find a freshness date anywhere on the bag. I'm not sure if I'm overlooking it or if it's simply not there. Also, this bag cannot be resealed after opening. Got to transfer the contents to a resealable container.Good stuff though.
