I was surprised at how heavy the metal is -- I was thinking it might be cheap, flimsy metal. Of course, each individual piece is a bit wavy, but once it's completely assembled, it's quite rigid.My chimney doesn't have an exposed flue rim or pipe, so most chimney caps available don't have any way to be attached. This chimney cap is one of the few that had mounting brackets for attaching flat onto the top of the chimney bricks.During assembly, I chose to have the capnuts inward with the hex bolts outward (opposite of the assembly instructions and what's depicted in the product photos) because I preferred a cleaner look.The only flaw (and the reason for knocking of one star) is that the holes for the bolts, particularly the wider holes where the mounting brackets attach, are far too big for the bolts that come with it. The wide holes offer very little surface for the bolt and capnut to hold on, and I bet if you were a little rough with it, they might rip their way through. I added 12 of my own washers on the wide-hole side (round holes on bracket were fine) to help ensure the fastener couldn't come loose.Speaking of coming loose... I also added a drop of thread lock to every bolt, since the hardware kit didn't include any nylon nuts or lock washers. I don't know that this step is absolutely necessary, but if there's a chance that any of them might come loose over time (due to repeated expansion/contraction of the metals as the seasons change), I wanted to help make sure they stay tight longer.Tip: if you're going to use thread lock, you should completely assemble the chimney cap and get everything perfectly lined up and square, then remove and apply thread lock to each bolt one at a time.Overall, the chimney cap is worth the price for what you get.

At first it looked hard to put together, but surprisingly it wasn't at all. Box came flat but every single screw and panel was in there. First things first, I laid everything out on the floor and started with one panel propped up against the wall and with the nubby screws facing outward, finger screwing lightly... each panel to form the box frame, I went back and tighted the screws with the supplied wrench. Then I put the topper on easily. I went outside to double check my chimney and noted how it is attached. They give you both slats to determine if it is an inner or side attachment. The 4 slats either go inside the square or outside. Mine went inside so I screwed the slats like in the diagram.While doing all this I noticed I scratched up the black a bit. I had planned to paint it anyway. No bother. After all was completed, I used Rust-Oleum High Heat ultra aged copper spray paint which prevents rust. The instructions also suggest painting it to prevent rusting and to last a long time. I strongly suggest spray painting it. It looks fantastic and worth far more than it was. I had no idea before this how rusted and broken up my cap actually was. A major hazard especially since I have so many trees close by and how dry the weather has been.The only hard part is working on a roof. Have all your gear ahead in a five gallon bucket, use gloves and bring the can of spray paint and caulk to fill in gaps. Very pleased with the Bolo price of 46.00. Other stores quoted much higher for the same thing. Also it got here in 2 days which gave me time to collect what I needed to repair bricks and also to waterproof them again spray spray spray.Looks fantastic and is safe after many years of neglect.Directions are included. Don't neglect your chimney. October is now my chimney month.

Great product but missing parts
I bought two. The product is well-designed. I like them. The only problem I have is one of them missing a G bolt. I called Bolo. They can't do anything but ask me to return it. they also suggested me to google the brand to contact manufacturer. However, I couldn't find it.
