All Physicians Lead: Redefining Physician Leadership for Better Patient Outcomes

Description:

2025 Global Book Awards Silver Medalist in Business Leadership

Leadership is an integral part of what doctors do.

All physicians lead, not just those with “official” leadership titles, such as CMO or Chief of Surgery. If leadership can be defined as influencing thought and behavior to achieve desired results, then clearly it isn’t something physicians work toward only as a later-career goal. Leadership is a skillset physicians practice every day. Whether persuading a patient to stop smoking, a lab to return speedy results, or a surgical team to understand what needs to happen in the OR, physicians lead. Leadership is baked into the job.

In fact, we already look to physicians as leaders. We expect them to make critical healthcare decisions, inspire treatment teams, influence patients’ behaviors, communicate impeccably, and be exemplars of professional conduct. Few roles in society carry more built-in leadership expectations then that of physician.

And yet, most physicians receive little focused training in leadership. While clinical skills are drilled into every physician-in-training for years, leadership skills are left largely to chance. All Physicians Lead seeks to change that. Primarily aimed at physicians, it offers an intro course in physician-leadership, using a “concentric circles” model: As a physician, progressing from learning to lead yourself, to leading other individuals, to leading teams, and finally, to leading organizations, can improve healthcare team performance and patient outcomes. Fundamentally, self-awareness underpins every stage of leadership.

The book also speaks to those in charge of medical schools, healthcare organizations, and physicians’ professional associations, arguing that leadership should be considered a core competency throughout every doctor’s career and structured education in leadership fundamentals should begin the first day as a medical student. Better physician leadership results in higher-performing healthcare teams, improved patient satisfaction, and better health outcomes for patients.

Authored by a prominent neurosurgeon and seasoned healthcare leader who literally “wrote the book” on physician leadership for the U.S. Army, All Physicians Lead is more than a book title, it is a rallying cry for change.

“Fascinating. In All Physicians Lead, Dr. Leon Moores refutes the concept that the surgeon operating on you is simply a highly skilled technician. The West Point graduate and paratrooper-turned-medical-doctor argues persuasively that physicians must be effective leaders who shape our healthcare experience on almost every level, and that our institutions must reflect this requirement. More than a leadership handbook, it is an invaluable roadmap.”
STAN MCCHRYSTAL

All Physicians Lead is a must read for every medical student, young and mid-career physician, and medical educator. It is a reference for self-improvement, advanced curriculum development and ensuring physicians are prepared for the future to lead in increasingly complex times. Dr. Moores draws on his lifelong experience as a military officer and physician leader to define the essentials of physician leadership development that is important in driving positive change in healthcare. Dr. Moores shows how great physicians lead with vision and purpose, helping organizations pivot and remain competitive and relevant to the future. All Physicians Lead will be a trusted reference which readers will return to often.

“I urge you to read All Physicians Lead and allow its timeless wisdom and eminent practicality to seep into your mindset. Leon Moores writes with the voice of an authentic and accomplished practitioner. The most compelling aspect of this seminal work is not simply that Leon can articulate these principles, it is that he lives these principles. It is said the measure of integrity is how one acts in adversity, and I can assure you Leon Moores has faced every adverse situation imaginable and led himself and others through those moments with dignity, grace, and resolve. All Physicians Lead is not the latest output from think-tank academics or once-removed consultants, it is the accounting of indelible truths from one who honored them by living them.”

“This book is a must-read for any physician looking to elevate how they show up as a leader. Dr. Moores offers a timely and practical guide for navigating a new vision for leadership, one that is wholehearted, empathetic, and inclusive. The health care industry has no shortage of challenges and opportunities, and a new cadre of physician leaders is critical to the transformation.”
RENEE DESILVA
CEO, The Health Management Academy

“Dr. Moores is to be congratulated on a unique concept of physician leadership. It is brilliant because it is simple, logical, and inspirational. As a physician and soldier, you will admire that he has taken the most egalitarian route imaginable towards leadership. Dr. Moores beautifully inspires us with the observation that we all lead with our patients. He demonstrates how each of us can do the same with our organizations and health care system. And, I am convinced that Dr. Moores’ concept can be practically extended beyond the physician job description. I cannot think of a more hopeful and practical solution, to the leadership challenges that face us in medicine.”
RICHARD G. ELLENBOGEN, MD, FACS,
Professor and chairman of neurological surgery, University of Washington School of Medicine; Theodore S. Roberts endowed chair in neurological surgery; Chief of pediatric neurological surgery, Seattle Children’s Hospital

“Leon Moores has crafted an excellent book on physician leadership that makes an important contribution to healthcare. His major premise is that it is just as important for a physician to influence treatment teams to achieve desired results as it is for a physician to have good clinical skills. He notes that good leadership should be exercised by all physicians regardless of their formal title. All Physicians Lead is well written and is as enjoyable to read as it is impactful. It should be a must-read by clinicians committed to improving medical practice and health outcomes.”
S. ROBERT HERNANDEZ, Dr.P.H.,
Distinguished service professor and director, Executive Doctoral Program in Healthcare Leadership, University of Alabama at Birmingham

“All physicians are leaders, right? After all, they make decisions directing others―staff, patients, payers, and the like―to do various activities. So what’s the problem? As Dr. Leon Moores describes in his book, All Physicians Lead, the premise is correct, but, while physicians may be leaders, many do not realize it and even fewer are trained in it. Dr. Moores convincingly argues that making leadership training an integral part of medical education will result in better decisions, more effective teams, and ultimately higher quality patient care!
RONALD R. BLANCK, DO, MACP,
Former lieutenant general, US Army; Former Army Surgeon General

“Leon Moores’ book, All Physicians Lead, is an excellent reference for leadership education for physicians. Making the points that all physicians are leaders, leadership is a learned skill, improving physicians’ leadership skills makes healthcare function more robustly and efficiently, and perhaps most importantly, the chief beneficiary will be the patients, Moores offers leadership education in a very practical and straightforward way. In today’s world of rapidly changing healthcare delivery physicians must recognize their leadership role and improve these skills. Given the legislative and judicial challenges to the principles of evidenced base care and the challenges to the sanctity of the physician/patient relationship, physicians must provide leadership to our communities. Physicians must accept their personal social responsibility in leading in these issues of importance.”
JOHN STUDDARD, MD, FCCP

“Leon Moores’ unique combination of leadership training and experience provides him with the ability to clearly communicate a proven path for physician leadership development at all organizational levels. His new book is concise and easy to follow, using examples and vignettes to convey his message. A must read for all physicians on their journey to becoming tomorrow’s healthcare leaders.”
NANCY BORKOWSKI, DBA, CPA, FACHE, FHFMA

In All Physicians Lead our colleague Leon Moores has highlighted an opportunity that is so crucial for todays physicians. In convincing language, Leon shows how every physician leads every day and how recognizing and reflecting on that can improve patient health. His passion for this subject and his personal experience combine to give us a valuable resource for these key issues. I trust in him and all he has to offer with education in physician leadership, and I wholeheartedly commend his work to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great information on leadership

Good book

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative read from a physician's viewpoint

R. · March 25, 2024

As someone who works in the healthcare field, I was looking forward to reading this book and gaining perspective from a physician’s point of view. “All Physicians Lead” by Leon E. Moores illustrates how physicians consistently exercise leadership in various capacities, from patient interactions to guiding medical teams, despite the lack of formal training in this domain. This resonates with the reality that doctors are entrusted with significant responsibilities that inherently require leadership skills. The concentric circles model presented in the book offers a structured approach to understanding and developing leadership skills, starting from self-leadership and progressing to leading teams and organizations. This framework not only provides clarity but also emphasizes the importance of self-awareness as a foundation for effective leadership. Moores’ credibility as both a neurosurgeon and a healthcare leader adds weight to the book's message, reinforcing the notion that leadership is not an abstract concept but a practical necessity within the medical field. This book serves as a timely and compelling call to action for recognizing and nurturing leadership skills within the medical community, ultimately aiming to enhance patient care and healthcare delivery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring writing. Some advice more easily applicable in meritocratic/developed health systems.

A.P. · July 19, 2025

The book provides useful advice in a clear way, often highlighting common sense concepts. It lacks too much "technical" detail, thus it is a good introductory reading to the concept of leadership in general. Additional case-scenarios could have helped the book become more captivating. The author appears passionate regarding the topic. You have to admire a country that "produces" similar role models. I am a little perplexed though regarding how applicable some of his suggestions are in less meritocratic/developed health systems...but why not fight anyway? I reckon the (military) doctor that happens to be the author of the book, would not think otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars The path to successful supervisory leadership, explained

U.D.H.P.(. · July 9, 2024

This book could just as easily have been written about the impacts of supervisory leadership competency everywhere - and would have been highly relevant. It was instead focused on supervisory physicians - from the perspective of the author's personal experience in a field where saving or improving human life is directly impacted by the ability of medical supervisors to bring out the best in their staff, patients, patient families and others. Many of us can point to past or present supervisors who made us want to perform better for them and their organizations, who we couldn't wait to get away from, and who fell somewhere between. This book focuses on the necessity of leadership training BEFORE people become supervisors. It can often be too late when a superior technical person is promoted into a supervisory position with no training or experience leading people. In any profession good outcomes will be limited if supervisory leadership skill is lacking. In the medical profession, people are literally living or dying from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on Medical Leadership

B.W. · April 9, 2024

The book is very well written and shows the importance of cultivating medical leadership to increase efficiency and contribute to a more cohesive team. The medical practitioners have to establish their leadership at several steps- while dealing with patients in helping them decide their course of treatment, while engaging with patients' relatives and guiding them how to best care for the invalids, and ofcourse while leading their teams at different steps of treating the patients. Hence, the right leadership would result in better health outcome for patients and faster job done while an underdeveloped leadership can give way to myriad sets of problems. The author defines the different qualities needed in a leader and how to train and cultivate medical leadership for best outcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on learning about leadership in the health field!

K.P. · April 3, 2024

This is a great book for anyone looking to improve their leadership skills in the health field! Dr. Leon E. Moores does a great job at providing tips on how to improve leadership in the medical field and what it also takes for physicians to run a great team in the medical field as well! This book is not just for people in the medical field with big titles to their name, but even for other people that work in the medical field as well! From working with other doctors and colleagues all the way to trying to influence patients to drop bad behaviors, Dr. Moores covers it all. Dr. Moores himself is also a physician, and was even a surgeon in the US Army before switching over to the civilian field as well to help add some credibility to his book too! Even if this book is geared more for leadership in the medical field, I know everything Dr. Moore is saying can apply to everyone else working as some kind of leader as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intersection of medicine and leadership

S. · April 30, 2024

Seeing the immense emotional and psychological stress physicians endure, I firmly believe this book will serve as a valuable asset to their in the field. It beautifully intertwines the core of medicine with the essence of human empathy, which I consider fundamental to effective leadership. For me, the relationship between leadership and the medical profession is symbiotic. In a field where empathy for both patients and practitioners is crucial, this book offers invaluable insights. I am going to gift it to my sister-in-law, who recently commenced her housemanship, will suit her better.Authored by a prominent neurosurgeon and seasoned healthcare leader, this book serves as a guide for physicians; in the good days and hard days.

A leadership manual for health professionals

L.T.E.C. · April 19, 2024

Written by a medical professional who worked with the US military on medical leadership strategies, this book addresses the need for those in the medical community to have structured training in leadership, which in turn creates a more efficient and beneficial medical system and promotes positive outcomes for both medical teams and patients.Offering rich insight and a considered perspective on how to achieve results through a well thought out training structure, this book is a recommended read for anyone in the healthcare industry.
