Living With God

Description:

Thomas, a graduate student living on the campus of a local university, freshly out of a defining relationship broken off by Cynthia, his former partner, posts an advert for a spare room, his accommodation made vacant, costly and, more so, unbearably empty by Cynthia`s departure.

The singular respondent to Thomas's advert appears at the door and introduces himself as God, renting out the room and moving in. Over the coming months, Thomas and God develop a close dynamic, regularly put to test through periods of harmony, discord and encounters with people outside of their household.

With God maintaining his divine provenance and purpose and Thomas always testing the claims, rebelling against heavenly authority and persistently querying his peculiar lodger for unreachable truths beyond the knowledge of humankind, an understanding slowly forms between the pair. Together, Thomas and God navigate life, all the while making the most of their own, developing association.

5.0 out of 5 stars Habitual converse with God

I have enjoyed books like "Progress In Divine Union" and "Holy Simplicity" in the past by Fr. Plus (1882-1958), and yet so far, this is my favorite of his books. It follows a theme that is one of my favorites: Cultivating a sense of God's Presence through the use of intermittent short prayers or aspirations:"There is no better way of accustoming our souls to look 'within' than by suggesting - without insistence - a short, swift phrase or thought, thrown out as if by chance, yet which pierces through our habitual indifference ... Father Natal in his well-known book on Perfection ... recommend(s) ... like all the masters, the practice of ejaculatory prayer so as to draw nearer to union with God" (viii, 74, 75)The French Jesuit and World War I chaplain Rev. Plus writes of prayer and sacrifice:"In heaven there will be souls who owe their salvation to such a sacrifice of another - perhaps an unknown - soul who obtained for them the benefits of the Redemption. ... Let us atone by much love. ... Mary Magdalen loved. ... let us offer for others the fervent prayers of an intoning intimacy. ... There are many hearts in which God is not. Atone for that ... It is always time to make reparation for everything." (26, 34, 36, 89)Other favorite quotes in this book of about 100 pages include:"We sometimes desire to explore the depths of another soul: how rarely those of our own!" (3)"What a great part in our lives is given to the consideration of 'nothing.' ... [We] 'squander away our days (Father Faber)' ... One thing alone matters - the soul" (8, 90, 41)"Words will do no good unless they are the fruit of silent prayer. ... To speak with authority to souls the apostle must come from Sinai, the Bible in his hand, in his heart the glow of his converse with God. ... He who prays well will preach well. ... For effective action, meditate deeply." (83, 85, 84)"Be rather sufferers than doers." - St. Vincent de Paul (88)"To be damned is to be secularized for all eternity. ... Damnation means eternal secularization." (28)
