An atmospheric tale of gangland intrigue written by Kazuo Kasahara (Battles Without Honour and Humanity) and starring Tomisaburo Wakayama, (Lone Wolf and Cub, The Bounty Hunter Trilogy) and genre legend Koji Tsuruta, Big Time Gambling Boss is one of the all-time classics of the yakuza genre. Paul Schrader called it the richest and most complex film of its type, while novelist Yukio Mishima hailed it as a masterpiece.

A well made, fascinating Yakuza melodrama with an emphasis on the hierarchy of the Japanese criminal underworld and their serious code of honor. Big Time Gambling Boss (1968) is a fine example of the genre and highly regarded. Filmed in a traditional style, with an excellent dramatic story, impressive color cinematography, use of atmosphere, and an often somber tone, this is a better film than the film's title may imply. Compare with it's contemporaries like Seijin Suzuki's flamboyantly absurd gangsters in Tokyo Drifter (1966) and Youth Of The Beast (1963), the more raw and bloody newsreel style of the many 1970's Yakuza films of Kinji Fukasaku, and Masahiro Shinoda masterpiece -the artsy noir Pale Flower (1964). Radiance Films Blu Ray restoration of the film looks very good and has two interesting visual essays on the genre as extras. Highly recommended to fans of Japanese cinema.

This also happened to my friend as well. I think Bolo needs to change the picture to the standard one as not to get people excited then disappointed.

Excellently acted and tension filled period yakuza (gangster) movie from 1968- one of the classics of the genre-good atmosphere and enthralling to watch-very well directed and paced.
