I tested this two steps rate ways. 1st was cut open and unrolled. This was super easy to catch a spark (first strike) and burnt with a larger flame. Total burn time like this was 3 min exactly. 2nd way was just fluffing open one end. This was much harder to land a spark in, but didn’t take too many times. This way burned with a smaller flame, but total burn time was 8min 45 sec.I’ll most likely do a hybrid of these two methods. But you really can’t go wrong with these. More expensive than cotton balls and vasoline, but was cleaner, easier to use and burns longer.

Blackbeard fire plugs are a necessity for any fire kit! 50 1.25" x .75" plugs are packed into this small easy to pack bag. 1 plug weights next to nothing; the bag is very light. I didn't follow the directions, I just ripped off roughly a quarter, stretched it out, and with one strick with my ferro rod it lite up instantly. That little amount burned intense for 2 minutes; I actually has to smuther it because it wouldn't go out. Great quality and excellent performance!! Absolutely worth the money. Not many things suprise me but these did. I recommend these to any prepper, outdoor enthusiast, or if you want to light your fire place.

I bought these for overnight/weekend backpacking trips to get a fire going in case conditions weren’t ideal on the trail, I used one to test it out and was pretty impressed. First off, breaking down the plugs is super easy, there is a slight texture to them but it is odorless. Secondly, they take flame/spark extremely well, out of curiosity I used flint instead of a lighter and it took on the first spark to hit it. And last but not least, although i didn’t set a timer, the plug held a good, strong flame about 1 to 1.5 inches tall for about 90 seconds. Extremely happy with this purchase. Also you can fit about 14 of these plugs in an Altoids tin with a BIC lighter as a back up or primary fire kit in your bag.

These are perfect fire starters, as advertised. I finally got to use one on a backpacking trip and the plug worked exactly as described in the product video.I have been starting fires in the mountains of Utah for years now so I understand what's needed locally. It's not typically hard to get a fire going with some pine kindling and a lighter. But these are like clicking the "easy" botton. I just sliced one down the middle and fillet it open, placed under kindling and some progressively larger sticks of wood. Lit the plug and started doing something else. Looked over after a little while and sure enough, raging fire.These also basically weigh nothing so you can bring several and not impact your pack weight. Would also be perfect for go bags.

Last pretty long
I lit one by itself and just let it burn to see how long it would stay lit and how big of a flame you get from it. I can say on a windy day I was able to get a good 5 Minutes out of it and I accidentally put it out it probably would ha e went longer. And the size of flame was perfect and would work great to build a fire with. All in all I highly recommend and am happy with my purchase[Update]It is a little hard to light it though because the wax on it is so thick you need to melt it back a bit to light it but once lit your good to go.
