This book is a fantastic resource for beginner writers, offering both inspiration and advice from an experienced author. The biggest takeaway? The secret to writing is simply to start writing—because, as the book quotes another author, "The water does not run unless the faucet is turned on."This book is filled with practical strategies to overcome writer’s block, develop confidence, and carve out time to write. Further, it provides excellent prompts, such as writing letters to and from your characters, exploring “what if” scenarios, and drawing inspiration from history and real life. There’s a strong emphasis on character development—even suggesting that every character should have a backstory, whether or not it appears in the final manuscript. Other key helps are: The importance of reading great books twice—once for enjoyment, once for analysis. Additionally characters prioritized over plot structures and world building techniques along with the role of themes and conflict in crafting a compelling narrative. You'll hear people ask a writer questions about how-to. How do you start? Where do you get your ideas? Do you know the ending when you start? They're curious because the task seems very daunting. There is a whole lot of how-to for character development and plot structure and dialogue and just about everything. There are tips and there are exercises to help. I've read that 97% of the people who start to write a book never finish. This book can put you in the top 3%.

My backstory: I am a nonfiction writer thinking about writing a fiction book. I'm pretty opinionated about my writing.That said, I believe this book has something useful in it for everyone, including published writers. For example: the beat sheet/roadmap/outline information at the beginning boggled my mind. I tried my best to trust the author that this was important, and struggled to understand and absorb it all. Ultimately I gave up and moved on, finding the rest of the book very useful and easy to understand. After finishing the book, I realized that I could write a first draft and then polish things up with that info. Much of this book's content could be approached that way by an experienced writer.I especially appreciated some of the exercises that a reader can use to explore the concepts. For those that learn more by doing than reading, they are perfect.

This was a excellent and comprehensive book on how to write fiction. One of the best I've read. It explores time management, outlining, character development, the necessity of conflicts, understanding the hero’s journey, and world building. I particularly enjoyed the sections that went over good dialogue and “showing, not telling.” I bought the eBook, but may invest in the paperback to add it to my library.

Fiction Writing 101 has chapters full of valuable and actionable information on various topics, including themes, characters, dialogue, and worldbuilding. This comprehensive guide is an excellent reference for fiction writers. It is easy to follow, engaging, and well-written with a touch of humor found here and there. I highly recommend this book to aspiring fiction writers.

I also found the writing prompts and exercises to be especially engaging, providing hands-on practice that truly enhances the learning process.Where I believe the book could improve is in its use of examples. While they were generally insightful, they sometimes lacked the level of detail I was hoping for. I also would have appreciated a deeper dive into the author's own experiences and processes. As a reader, knowing the author's credentials and understanding their path to expertise would have further enriched the content. Nonetheless, for its broad spectrum of advice and easy-to-follow structure, I would certainly recommend this book to those looking to dip their toes in the realm of fiction writing.
