One of the great debut features of the twenty-first century, Barry Jenkins’s captivating, lo-fi romance Medicine for Melancholy unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly gentrifying San Francisco, where a one-night stand between two young bohemians, Micah (Wyatt Cenac) and Jo’ (Tracey Heggins), spins off into a woozy daylong affair marked by moments of tenderness, friction, joy, and intellectual sparring as they explore their relationships to each other, the city, and their own Blackness. 5.0 out of 5 stars this unveils the city in ways moonlight does not
Lovely film. Two thumbs up for Barry Jenkins. While Moonlight won the Oscar and I love the photography in that film, I feel Jenkins' interest in what it means to be urban truly bubbling up in this movie here which is his debut. It's so good, you can anticipate the greatness of Moonlight, which is far more depressing and indeed, melancholic. Here, I see a couple struggling for power. I admire how the woman protagonist is true to what she wants and who she is even if it doesn't jibe well with her revolutionary one-night stand partner.
5.0 out of 5 stars I dare you to give it less than five stars.
My arts fraternity, Gamma Xi Phi, recently got together to watch this DVD. We like to highlight independent works where possible and none of us had yet seen Medicine for Melancholy. To recap the plot: A black guy and black girl randomly hook up at a party and spend the next 24 hours together enjoying and re-discovering San Francisco. The twist is how Barry Jenkins gets us there. In my opinion, the viewer instantly falls in love with Micah. He seems to be a complex, artsy, romantic... and he's awkward. The female lead, however, is less sympathetic in the beginning. (Her name is withheld because it's a spoiler, sorta.) So after the first ten minutes, my group really HATES the female lead. But we're eager to see how the director makes her sympathetic. He does. He nails it with the story, she nails it as an actress. It's really just a beautiful, brief love story. There are few things I could critique in this film. First, some of you may not like the washed out, nearly black-and-whiteness of the film. Only certain segments are filmed in vivid, rich colors. But I think that serves a purpose artistically. There are a few scenes where the characters do things which may not occur between two strangers in the "real world" but because of the actors, you believe it. Well, I do.There are also a few preachy scenes as well. Gentrification is a main point of this story and I think because me (and the audience I was with) thoroughly understand what gentrification and urban renewal mean to people of color and the poor, the narrative wasn't very necessary. BUT, I do think it was necessary for the female lead to hear said narrative. So again, all is forgiven.I've said the word "awkward" once. If you are a fan of the Awkward Black Girl web series, I think you will like this film. No, it's not a comedy. But it's the type of film that shows the diversity of black folks in the real world. It's not Love & Basketball, Jason's Lyric, or The Best Man. This is a life-sized (not larger than life) film about the kind of folks you might have gone to school with.My review doesn't do the film justice. It's just plain GOOD.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound tracks!
Loved it!
4.0 out of 5 stars But I think the movie works as a snapshot of what looking for love in your early twenties is like now
An acquaintance complained that the movie tries to force something to happen between two people who seem decidedly not meant for each other. I think she was expecting a traditional rom com with some indie cinema flourishes. But I think the movie works as a snapshot of what looking for love in your early twenties is like now. I think it works even better as a metaphor for a search for connection and community, with the personal story of two people mirroring that of San Francisco at the beginning of what would become the Silicon Valley takeover. Throughout the movie there are scenes illustrative of how the money flowing into the area affects its residents, arts scene, housing stock and politics. The only thing I didn't like was the woman being kept, clueless and rootless. While Micah's situation seems just as tentative, he's very much more aware, the "woke" character in a teacher teach me tonight dynamic with her. But I understand how reversing the roles would just present other problems.Watch it. The stylistic flourishes are endearing. The writer/director via Twitter said that he paid careful attention to the way the movie sounds, and I can hear that attention. Listen for it. The bits when race raises its head ring true to me. I enjoyed this slice of a very particular time and place with characters in search of timeless things.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love this video
OMG!! Love this video...The actors are great. I live my life in the minimalist vein so if I purchase a CD or DVD it is really something Special and this is one of those. I first checked it out from my wonderful local library and had to order it a few days later. It caught me and I have looked at it from time to time to time to time every since. Smooth and beautiful locations true to form (I use to live there also)...Heggins Great movie...Thank you.
5.0 out of 5 stars Basis for character in Spike Lee KKK
Amazing first movie by Barry Jenkins, small budget, contemporary story. Washington’s acting in Spike Lee’s KKK is so clearly based on this character it’s almost actor-plagiarism!
3.0 out of 5 stars Touching but boring
Barry Jenkins, surprisingly, only has two feature films: "Moonlight" and "Medicine for Melancholy". In Moonlight, Jenkins was in the right place and focused artistically with the right on screen talent. Its apparent that in Medicine, Jenkins was still experimenting and learning the craft of film making. Medicine is a decent film; its definitely your run of the mill "artsy fartsy" film but it has a good story and good script. The photography is excellent and you see many of the same great techniques in Moonlight (the cinematographer in both films is James Laxton). However, thank goodness Wyatt Cenac stuck to writing because he's awful as an actor. IMO, he drags the movie.
