Join Rose the owl as she learns about kindness, friendship and self love in this beautiful children's book about the disability experience. Everyone has something, sometimes you can see it & sometimes you can't.

Rose the wee owl is planning her birthday celebration. Instead of feeling excited though, Rose is worried that her friends will not want to come, because she is different. As Rose and her mother deliver the invitations, Rose discovers that the other animals have something that makes them different, too. How will Rose's party turn out? Will her friends come to the party? Find out in this unique and heartwarming story of compassion and kindness.

Targeted for children ages 3-11, this is the first of a series of books featuring woodland characters with differences that are each inspired by real children with disabilities - this series kids are sure to cherish as they grow, and learn from through empowering, motivating and fun-to-read stories. Kids ages: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

Various disabilities are individually highlighted in this book including facial paralysis/weakness, inability to abduct the eyes (Duane syndrome), club feet, cleft palate, mild, moderate & severe hypotonia, limb differences, strabismus, Autism, Pierre Robin sequence, Poland syndrome, developmental delay, speech, hearing, vision, feeding and respiratory difficulty. These individual differences can all be found in Moebius syndrome.

What is a WORDLESS book?

A wordless book is a book with either none or very few words.

Why WORDLESS?

Wordless picture books are an opportunity to teach literacy skills such as book handling, labeling, sequencing (beginning, middle, end), inferencing, making predictions, building connections & reader confidence, social emotional learning, dialogue and creative writing. “Reading” wordless picture books can also strengthen storytelling skills and lay the foundation for children to write their own stories.

Our focus at @Acorn-Cottage_Press (Instagram) and AcornCottagePress.com is the authentic and positive representation of disabilities in picture books. As a disabled educator and mama to a little one with a difference, I know how important it is to see yourself represented in what you read. The Invitation has been adapted from my book Why Me, Mama? as a quasi companion/paired text to create another layer of accessibility for students. Every character in The Invitation has a different disability. Seeing differences represented in picture books increases understanding, empathy, and acceptance. Seeing yourself represented in picture books is a reminder that you matter and have value.

Wordless picture books can be especially accessible for second language learners, their families, those with learning differences, and reluctant readers

If you enjoy
The Invitation and would like to explore more WORDLESS books: a couple others I have enjoyed are I Walk With Vanessa by Kerascoet, HIKE by Pete Oslwald, and Flashlight by Lizi Boyd.
