5.0 out of 5 stars Something every serious canner needs in their pantry
I purchase bay leaf in bulk in order to save money. I use it in cooking all the time but I mostly use it in processing chicken for pressure canning. We process our own organically raised birds. I also can beef and regular and smoked pork using bay leaf too. I also add bay leaves to dry beans I can up for quick use. If I'm in a super hurry I raw pack meats adding 2 bay leaves and ten peppercorns plus a few whole cloves of fresh garlic and a healthy chunk of fresh onion per jar. Each jar gets a heaping teaspoon of bouillon (which is the salt) and no other salt. I do not add fluids except perhaps an ounce or two and that's it. Raw pack produces it's own juices. The jars are not as pretty when done via raw pack as when exhausting the meats by partially cooking, but I'm looking for fast meals and need fast prepping because I can for the year ahead at one time.The jars are harder to clean out because they need a good brushing. I get my canning jar brushes in the automotive section of the dollar store. They are durable and get every spot cleaned of meat debris. (yes I know the brush was intended to be for scrubbing cars but I never use them on the vehicles and) I also run the jars through the dishwasher afterwards too. The strained juices make great gravy bases whether made with a roux or a cornstarch slurry and are so flavorful with herbs spices and bouillon. The bay leaf ads so much to the flavor I wouldn't want to can any meats or beans without adding some. If you try meats in a taste test with and without bay leaf you'll see a big difference, the meats without it are passable but with it is so totally yum. What's best about buying this brand in the bucket is that the bucket is reusable and food safe.The bucket keeps the leaves from being crushed and from going stale. I prefer them whole and as fresh as I can get them. It's a nice size for the serious canning person. Another great recipe for beef is to use the Bernardin old time recipe for beef with grated apple and carrots. Adding bay leaf to this recipe is a really good idea! The gravy is sensationally savory and so is the meat!

Yes, I can't open this stupid pail. Where the cut starts, it broke off ( I have pictures. ) I'm too old and my hands are killing me. Tried using a cardboard cutter but am afraid I'll lose a finger. HELP!

I wish them the best and I am thankful they were willing to go the extra mile with their customer service!**Original review- I read the past reviews and decided to take a chance however HIGHLY upset and disappointed! Mostly broken into bits and the few that were whole were extremely small. Item is NOT returnable and the product is inferior.
