5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
This was the most intricate and heartbreaking story of the Holocaust with a story that is very different than other accounts. Combined heartbreaking and victory
5.0 out of 5 stars A Heartwarmer
What a beautiful but oh so sad heartwarming story! I would have liked to talk to Moshe in person. I will never understand how so much evil can go on to this day. My father served in WWII in the pacific but when I took him to Dachau Concentration Camp and he looked at the photos, I noticed tears streaming down his face. I had never seen my father cry before. Is Moshe is still alive today enjoying his grandchildren? Hope so.
4.0 out of 5 stars Don’t give up because of the tedious writing
According to the author this book wasn’t written for me - it’s “primarily for today’s young people.” That’s not me.And like other readers I struggled to keep reading in the beginning of the book. The writing is tedious and often very repetitive (which will turn off young readers). Listing the names of family members - why? Serves no purpose except maybe for Mr Kessler’s family members. At first the story isn’t compelling but for some reason I continued reading thinking “it’s going to get better.”It does! The writing still needs help but the story is compelling. Imagine you’re 13 and you purposely, on the advice of a stranger, separate yourself from your mother and younger brother while at least sensing you’ll likely never see them again. And so the horror begins. For more than a year this child is tortured but survives. The writing doesn’t help but still the reader senses the child’s agony. The pain is unimaginable. But the hope kept me reading. Knowing that the child survives kept me from giving up on reading.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
Everyone should read this. It is beautifully written and answers a lot of questions people ask about the Holocaust. As a middle school teacher, I struggle to explain the answers, but this does it perfectly. I love that it is appropriate for teen readers. Both of my own children want to read it next. Reviewers who said it repeats, it provides clarification since there is a lot happening in Moshe's story. Additionally, the book was translated to English so the formality of the writing is understandable and I appreciate it as an English teacher. This is a must read. I only put it down a few times to dry my tears and to go hug my children and appreciate my blessings.
5.0 out of 5 stars New book, packed with care..
Great read, I love history.. wonderful early delivery..
5.0 out of 5 stars Heart wrenching and warming at the same time.
I’ve read many WW2 books and this one explained the politics and circumstances in a way that I could easily understand. Another incredible survival story amidst just tremendous evil and violence. I was struck with how in the world could anyone do backbreaking work day after day 12 hours with no food or break and then walk back to stand for hours. The strength to survive during and after the war will always sadden but encourage me. Thank you for sharing your story in such a way we can understand better what you experienced so that no one will ever forget!
5.0 out of 5 stars Tragic Story
Thought provoking biography. It is a hard to read book due to the human cruelty that is beyond imagination. Even so it is very important information. We can’t bury our face in the sand hopefully reassuring that this never happens again Beautifully written by the author!
3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, writing style wasn’t for me
This is a story worth telling. This is a story worth reading about. This is a story worth writing about. I appreciate the author including photos. However, I am taking two stars because the writing style wasn't for me. There is a lot of repetition (like another reviewer pointed out) and a lot of information that I felt wasn’t either that important to the story or interesting (someone mentioned long list of family names. Like when you’re reading the first books of the Bible and they give you a list of names you don’t care about and just want to skip that section all together). I reserve 4 and 5 stars for books I truly love, and even tho I love this story, I don’t love this book. This is just based on my personal preference as far as writing styles. I enjoy reading thrillers. If you’re into more “history textbook” type writing, this book may be great for you. I don’t mean disrespect to the author, who truly put a lot of love and care telling this story.
Highly recommended book!
The Boy from Block 66 is an incredibly moving and highly recommended book. The author does a great job of telling the true story of Moshe Kessler's survival. It's an emotional and essential read that sheds light on a truly remarkable and horrifying part of history.
Good book
Bought this for my 15 year old (for school English class reading). English is not his mother language. It was well written and he liked it.
Such a terrible tragedy; such a beautifully told story!
I was surprised by how this book was written. I thought it was going to be more of a story with dialogue and development, however, most of the book is written in a way that you feel like the events are being narrated to you by a survivor. It's so well done, but it took me about a week to get through it. I'm quite a fast reader, but in this case, I could only read so much at a time. The subject material is heavy and dark and it forced me to slow down and absorb the impact of it through the eyes of someone who was actually there. I 100% recommend this read!
Truth and light 🕯️.
A truth told simply and with feeling. I read it all in one sitting. It makes me wish to meet Moishe to see this humble person whose humanity shines through. I want to read about Mr Kalina as soon as I can.
Great read !
