Unfortunately older rats are much more cautious and it takes longer to catch them unless they are hungry.People complain about the lack of a handle but the lever on the top of the door sticks up a few inches when something has been caught and serves as a safe way to pick up the trap. Why did you pick this product vs others?:The snap traps weren’t working — either being avoided or tripping without catching anything. I thought these would be easier for them to go into, which seems to be true.The only problem is they aren’t dead when they’re caught. Luckily dry ice is available near me. I dropped them in a metal trash can, then put a container with dry ice and hot water in with them. They were peacefully asphyxiated in a few minutes.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:Bought this because I’ve had a chipmunk destroying hardscape around the yard and driving my dog crazy since he arrived. After reading the simple instructions I placed the trap in the area I’ve seen the chipmunk regularly (baited with peanuts) and within 20 min he was trapped. The handle makes it easy to pick up after the animals captured and looked strong enough to keep it from breaking through. Great tool for a humane release. I definitely recommend.

I had a rat problem in my condo--a mother rat had nested in my water shutoff valve box where the pipes go into the wall and was coming out at night tearing twigs off my rosebushes and lemon tree for the nest as well as eating the lemon tree bark. The association pest control folks hadn't done anything so I ordered two of these. The first night, with colby jack cheese as bait, I got nothing. The second night, I switched to peanut butter and caught what I'm pretty sure was the mama in one trap and one of the little ones in another. They're now living in a nearby nature preserve. These worked exactly like they were supposed to with the right bait. Highly recommend.

I have a few HavAHart brand small animal traps, which work well but have very sensitive triggers that can make setting up a challenge. I decided to try this other brand and model, and am pleasantly surprised. The mechanism is much less fussy than the HavAHart design, and yet it seems to trigger reliably and the mechanism that locks the animal in is effective. It also has a feature that allows it to be baited and set, them moved to the desired location without fear of false triggering en route, followed by simply moving one end of the trigger wire from its 'safe' position to the 'ready' position.It is possible for the user to leave the 'lock' wire in a position too far forward that might prevent it from working as designed. To alleviate this, I hold the end of the trigger wire and gently move it to an 'almost triggered' position to visualize the beginning of the triggering sequence; if the 'lock' wire starts to move rearwards correctly, then I proceed to move the trigger wire to its 'ready' position with confidence that all will work well (otherwise, if the 'lock wire' moves forwards, I know to move it a bit rearwards and try my test again).I don't do live capture/release, as it is prohibited in my suburban community, and allowable release areas are too far away. I keep a typical 5 gallon plastic paint bucket full of water in the garden shed, and this trap drops down inside the bucket just enough to leave no air gap. 30 seconds later the deceased critter can be dumped out of the trap into a Quart sized zip-lock storage bag for disposal in the trash.My only complaint is that the bait tray is quite a long reach from the door end of the trap, so reaching it is a minor chore. I always wear disposable (nitrile) rubber gloves when handling the trap for cleaning, baiting, setting, transporting, and 'execution' and dumping. This prevents touching the critter or its possible fluids, and also avoids leaving my scent on the trap. Before each re-use, I reach into the trap with gloved hand, holding a folded half-sheet or paper towel and wipe the bait tray until visibly clean. I re-bait with peanut butter on the end of a wooden Popsicle stick.I have two of these traps, and keep them pretty busy reducing the vermin population near my house to a tolerable level.

Caught three chipmunks in the span of 24 hours! They now live happily in a nature preserve with lots and lots of nuts, and I may get to taste my own fruits and veggies now!I use unshelled nuts for bait, less messy than PB. Like someone else suggested weigh down the cage with rocks.The cages are made of somewhat thin wire, and they are starting to rust already, but they work, and are humane.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:I don't want to kill anything, even a rat, so this was my option. It didn't take long and hubby will take him out to the woods to live another day. Just hard to put bait in the back where the little dish is, otherwise works great.Size:Small

The squirrels in Alaska are ruthless with trying to get into cabins out here in the bush. I got a two pack of these traps and so far I’ve caught two squirrels and neither have gotten out. Super easy to use and lightweight. I put some peanut butter in the little tray for them and it gets them every time

I wasn't planning on trapping squirrels, but two traps got two in less than 1/2 hour. Including a big one who has been a nuisance. Relocated both. 3 chipmunks were next. Very happy. Easy to set up and the door carrying handle keeps you from getting bit.
