5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tone For A Budget Guitar
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Around the time that Gibson launched their Adam Jones custom silverburst LP I started listening to Tool on rotation (still am!) and wanted to get that unique Jones tone, but didn’t want to spend a fortune and…I’m left-handed :(. So I looked here for a decent budget guitar to mod and found this awesome green LyxPro lefty LP!To start, this is a budget guitar so I was expecting some faults, which it does have. The finish on the body isn’t perfect as there are a couple of runs under the topcoat. Also, the topcoat is rather brittle around the edges, as I discovered when replacing the jack plate with something more robust. There were tiny pin sized holes in the fretboard which I filled with some ebony fretboard filler and sanded down. The pots were your standard budget pots with not much fine control, and the toggle switch was glitchy but fixed when I required the guitar for the mods. But beyond that this guitar is great! The body is solid wood, the tuners are good and hold in tune, the edges of the fretboard are rather smooth and comfortable. It feels nice under my hand. The frets ends were also nicely rounded off, this not sharp. Solid plastic nut and sturdy tailpiece. Now, for the modifications I made to get that Adam Jones sound: I removed all the electronics and replace them with a Seymour Duncan Super Distortion bridge pickup, and a Gibson custom neck humbucker pickup. For the pots, I replaced the bridge volume with a DiMarzio 500k audio taper pot for awesome volume control allowing for a clean tone when turned down. All other pots were replaced with CTS 500k short-shaft pots. In addition, I bought new .047uF drop capacitors to add between tone and volume pots. I got a new jack and Jack plate for which I needed to drill new and fill in old holes to fit it. I rewired everything myself using the modern wiring schematic (if I remember correctly), added some lefty dials, a new toggle plate, new chrome toggle tip, new Ernie Ball strings and I was ready to rock. The second I plugged it in for the first time and turned the volume up, I got goosebumps. It sounded amazing and now screeched like it needs to for playing Tool songs. Out of my 7 guitars, it is now by far my favorite and I play it on a daily basis. And of course I had to make an Adam Jones style guitar strap to go with it.Overall, this was a great guitar as I bought it, and an awesome guitar for any beginner. But after my, this thing is a rock legend with outstanding sustain. I highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
Had to set the relief in the neck other than that plays good
4.0 out of 5 stars Great craftsmanship but badly needed setup.
While the craftsmanship was first class, the guitar had a few problems. It had the worst back bow I’ve ever seen. Used the included allen wrench to correct that. Not sure a beginner could have figured that out. Next, the first four frets had some sharp edges, so I filed those down. They were not terrible tho. The rest of the frets were acceptable. Finally, the 13th fret was high enough to cause fret buzz on the three bass strings. I filed that down some and set the action a little high and that seems to have resolved it. I’ll probably go back and reduce it more in the future. All other frets OK. The guitar itself is a real beauty. Love the color (green) and the paint job was flawless. No loose hardware, tuners etc. Sound is pretty good. All said, a good purchase if you or someone you know can do a basic setup on it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing guitar
This Les Paul is awesome. Absolutely beautiful metallic gold finish. Looks just like a Gibson, you'd never know unless you saw the name on the headstock. Please see the attached pictures - I did replace the knobs and added pointer washers to them but you can see the original "speed" knobs in the third picture. Like someone else commented, the top strap peg came out very shortly after playing standing up, so I recommend you secure it with glue or something right away so the guitar doesn't fall unexpectedly. Overall this guitar is great. Excellent value for the price. Also I recommend putting on a fresh pair of strings. I put in PAF pickups and it sounds awesome. Playability is good. I really don't have any complaints about this guitar. I highly recommend this to any guitar player especially if you are interested in learning to play guitar and don't want to break the bank.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent build quality for a budget instrument.
I am pleasantly surprised by this guitar. The finish is spectacular, the neck feel and fretboard binding are perfect. It is a bit heavy, but as an SG body, this is to be expected. Strat style guitars are lighter, because the bodies are thinner as well. The pickups sound really good. There is an issue with the selector switch which I will have to swap out b/c it sometimes does not select the humbucker.I got this guitar to swap out the pickups with a pair of Fishman Fluence pickups. But after having plugged it in, I don't think I want to change the pickups. They sound really good. This guitar can easily go head to head with 2k+ $ guitars by Gibson.
1.0 out of 5 stars poor quality used product
I received this poor quality packaging guitar on time. This one has been used, not new. Bass strings E,A,D making buzzing sound ...Do not buy from this merchant.
5.0 out of 5 stars Bang for your bucks
Just received the guitar today the box was beat up from shipping had me worried it could have been put in a second box well any way the guitar was in good condition had to drop the action it was super high the string's are cheap I'm putting on a new set so far I can only find one flaw on the guitar were the binding and the neck meet the body the pickups seem to be ok the neck pickup is nice and warm the bridge pickup is a little to bright for me probably change both of them out to some EMG pickup at a later date the volume and tone controls are clean and smooth no cracking the pickup switch is a little noisy switching between pickups I'm going to have to polish the frets not the best of jobs on them from the factory well any ways I always wanted a gold top guess I finally got one in closing for the money your getting a really nice guitar
Great Guitar
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I love this thing. It's nicer than my old Epiphone les paul. The neck is the classic thicker shape and feels really good in your hands. One thing I recommend doing is filing down the edges of the frets. Lightly. It doesn't take much. I literally filed mine down with a toenail clipper file and it worked perfect. The edges came out nice and smooth. Just like any guitar you should also adjust the string height and the truss rod to set up the action the way you like. I also changed the knobs because I like the color gold and removed the pick guard. Check it the pics! My new favorite guitar! Plays like a dream. UPDATE - Here it is a few years later and the guitar is still my favorite. Still plays great. I put the pick guard back on and upgraded to Wilkinson pickups, as you can see in the last pic. Sounds awesome.
Good guitar
The sound, looks and all are very good.
Toggle switch not working properly
Had the guitar for 6 hours and the first thing that goes wrong is the toggle .won’t allow the rear pickup to function . My wife and I liked the guitar but I am not going to mess with it since I am just to old to mess with a soldering iron. I have other great guitars this was to be leaner for my wife . Played well for a cheap and sound good but it needs a lot of adjustments and we’re a nice size
Do not buy this!
The toggle switch is not working, it's stuck. Only the pickups' volume knobs working, the other 2 are just there for nothing. Fretwires are sharp along the edge of the neck good thing I checked them first or else I cut myself. It came very dusty. I bought it because of the reviews I saw on YouTube but I guess that's not reliable for this product. It's total garbage and that's where it will go. I wish I could rate this lower than 1.
You can feel the lack of care
This was admittedly an impulse buy, but even at the low price (for a lefty instrument, anyway) - I confess that I currently regret it a bit. With tax this came to about $344. Not bad, but - to compare: I recently got a second hand 2005 Epiphone LP 100 with a hardshell case included, and the difference in quality is apparent lolThis LyxPro has some nice aesthetic features that the Epiphone LP 100 doesn't (like trapezoid inlays instead of dot inlays, for example) but can't touch the LP 100 in build quality. The LP 100's finish is perfectly unblemished, even after so many years. It feels smooth and well crafted as soon as you hold it.In comparison: the LyxPro feels like corners were cut. The lack of care or quality assurance is just too immediately apparent to really recommend this guitar.Pros (overall):- The color / mahogany woodgrain is nice, imo- Looks and styling are pretty accurate to classic Les Paul style- Price is competitiveCons (on the one I received):- Noticable flaw in guitar finish resulting in line down middle of guitar after the bridge (pics attached)- Pickup selector label upside down. Rhythm label is on bridge pickup, while Treble label is on neck pickup (pic attached)- Frets are rough and sharp as hell, but that part is kinda expected, so I'm not docking 'em too much there- Included strings are gutter trash (again - kinda expected, to be fair)- Although functional, the tuning pegs are tiny and cheap looking- Another small defect in the finish on the horn. Similar to the one pictured, but smallerI dunno. Maybe I'm just being too picky, but the flaws in the finish and the upside down pickup selector label really make the thing feel like it isn't worth the money, and dashed even my low expectations lolI will say: this would be a decent first guitar, with a bit of love! I think a new guitarist wouldn't notice its flaws anyway, tbh. If I don't return this one - I will improve it a bit over time, and it may shine a bit brighter then!My ranking here is based on the cosmetic flaws, and my current feelings of buyer's remorse lol
