Still Remarkable Even 10 Years After Release
In 2013, a decade ago, this original game was released on the PS3 and other platforms. Even in 2023, this game remains remarkably innovative. While other video game companies have released open-world games over the past decade, there's no doubt that GTA 5 still stands as an exceptional title. I'm eagerly anticipating the release of PS5 versions for both Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, similar to the two preceding games.Positive Aspects:- The story in offline mode is impeccable, making it one of the top-tier titles ever released. The distinct personalities of the three protagonists – Michael, Trevor, and Franklin – are wonderfully crafted, and the storylines tailored to their characters are excellent.- The ability to customize your cars and renovate homes in the online mode to create your personal space is fantastic. While titles like Minecraft and SimCity also offer city creation, GTA 5's level of realism in creativity is exceptional, in part due to the substantial budget invested.- Characters like Lester and Lamar from the offline mode appearing in online missions is a highly commendable idea. Each character possesses unique traits, setting them apart and providing a feature not commonly found in other game titles.Areas for Improvement:- Although the open-world environment enables players to engage in the game online with others in the same session, the quality of interaction among players is lacking. Updates like heist missions have been incorporated, but most players seem fixated on combat, making it difficult to enjoy the high-quality experience offered by the offline mode. Between 2013 and 2015, the online experience felt more immersive, with more players and stronger player relationships.- The content of online update packages tends to be repetitive, not necessarily attracting new players. The addition of luxury homes or new vehicles doesn't necessarily entice newcomers. This challenge is shared by other well-known titles like Call of Duty and Fortnite – as time passes after release, the player base tends to dwindle.- A more frequent release of new titles, akin to Call of Duty's approach, could help Rockstar Games sustain their fan base. GTA 5 was released in 2013, and the prolonged development of GTA 6 might lead to frustration among dedicated fans. Therefore, releasing Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS5, developing a new MAX PAYNE installment, or remastering classics like GTA 4 could be viable strategies.- The monetization system requires improvement. While addressing glitches is necessary, compared to the monetization systems in mobile gaming apps, GTA 5's system lacks mechanics that naturally encourage players to spend. Call of Duty Mobile players who spend $200 each month on mythic weapons demonstrate that learning from Activision's practices could be beneficial in this aspect.
Still a Classic, Now Smoother and Better Looking
The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V breathes new life into an already iconic game. With faster loading times and noticeable graphical improvements, it looks great despite being nearly a decade old. The solo campaign still pulls you in, and GTA Online remains as addictive as ever. While the upgrade doesn’t completely push the PS5’s capabilities, it’s still a solid improvement that keeps the game feeling fresh and fun for both new players and longtime fans.
