5.0 out of 5 stars I love these 3D wooden puzzles
This is another great 3D wooden “puzzle” that has a function (cool gear action that opens the box). I’m not sure I’d call it a puzzle as much as a build kit. All the pieces are laser cut, and it’s good quality. Take your time, because some of the pieces are fragile. If you break one (sometimes it happens, no matter how careful you are) you can usually glue it back together with some white Elmers glue. Pro tip: if you want to stain it (all one color) then do this before you build it, while the pieces are all still in sheets. Don’t do this with paint, or you’ll seal the pieces into the sheet, but stain/dye will work. 5 stars.
4.0 out of 5 stars Cool box for rocks
Decent puzzle with a longer build time, the pieces were a little hard to work with, they were a bit too small and I have shaky arthritis hands. Overall the box looks pretty nice. The opening and closing mechanism could be a little smoother but it's wood.
1.0 out of 5 stars Cut wrong - avoid the Mystery Box!
I do a lot of these. Woodtrick is the only brand with consistent problems. I'm done buying from them. At least some of the good reviews above attach photos showing they reviewed the wrong product. As to THIS product, the Mystery Box, there are incorrectly cut pieces -- and no, it was not user error. Again, I make a ton of these things. This one actually isn't especially HARD, but they probably rated it that way given all the issues folks have had trying to fit things together that weren't cut right. Avoid, don't buy, and go look up something from a different brand entirely. Rokr / Robotime / Rolife are all good, as are many others.
2.0 out of 5 stars Got it working, but yikes.
The media could not be loaded. I like 3D wooden puzzles generally. I've built dozens now, including at least a half dozen or so involving gears that need waxing, etc. In any case, I'm not new to it. I like doing it. This looked like a fun challenge to both build and let others discover how to unlock it.It didn't go according to plan on several levels. There was a long debate within my family on who would build vs. who would discover how it's unlocked, and the puzzle box got set aside for months before my 9yo son pulled it out and asked if he could just build it. I had a feeling he'd need my help, but I figured he could do the bulk of it himself, so I told him to go ahead.Well, the first challenge was apparently opening the box it came in. They use wooden "puzzle" pieces to lock the sheets together. It was a PAIN to open, and I had to resort to a mix of tools to free the contents up.Then my son got working, and quickly ran into problems. I took over, and then I ran into problems. I undid my work, double-checked the instructions, redid the steps, ran into problems, undid my work, double-checked the instructions... and again, and again, and again. There's several things going on here. One is that I have a lot going on, so I can't focus on any project as much as I'd like. Even as I write this, my son's talking to me about how bombs and sticks are alike, and I have no idea how he came to that conclusion, but I digress...Unusual challenges with this project:1. The instructions are on a folded poster. It's awkward. There's no bookmarking of steps, and many steps LOOK similar, so it's easy to get confused.2. The instructions are NOT that great on clarity. There are symbols without a clear key. Wax will be indicated, but they won't tell you if you need to wax the cut sides vs the flat sides or both. There are other symbols I'm still unclear on.3. The wood is cut incorrectly by ~1mm for most pieces. This means everything is borderline too tight. I used a mallet and pliers to assemble much of the non-moving pieces. I cannot tell you how many of the moving pieces I sanded/shaved down to make this box work. It's unreal. There were 8 pieces that are assembled from the bottom of the lid that I had to grab an actual knife and cut 1mm off the notches to give the pieces enough freedom to move. It was a nightmare.4. Nearly identical pieces are not marked in a way that they can be identified once removed from their frames. This was a problem when I was redoing steps that forced me to redo yet more steps when I realized I switched two pieces by accident.Lots and lots of problems. Now, did I get it to work? Yes. Is it nifty? Yes. Is it really a puzzle box? Maybe? I can see it being used in an escape room where you find the key one place and have to figure out where to use it for another clue inside the box. However, it's not the kind of puzzle box where you can just hand a box over and watch someone puzzle over how to open it.It is very sturdy and appears durable once completed. I do love the general design. However, I wouldn't consider this a good value for the money. I do love Wooden.City's 2D wooden puzzles, but this one was more frustrating than fun.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun building kit
Easy to put together with easy to follow instructions. Some of the smaller pieces have extras in case they break/crack. I HIGHLY recommend making sure that every piece is sanded down on the edges or otherwise it might have a sticking problem when you try to turn the gears.
4.0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Puzzle
This is a very interesting puzzle to assembly and put together as it is a little tricky. All the plates that the pieces are mounted to are very well made and it also comes in a nice wooden shipping box. Pieces break off fairly easy but I kept a utility knife handy for trimming little bits that would hang on. You will need to do this as some of the little bits will get in the way of putting it together. Everything went together and instructions are good and it took us a couple of hours to put together. It is interesting sitting on the coffee table as it works and moves and is a nice conversation piece. Wood is good looking with tinted parts that make it stand out. Great when someone picks it up and opens the mystery box. Great for the adults that like puzzles.
5.0 out of 5 stars This is great
I like the marble one. But, this was a nice puzzle to put together. It did take a lot of time to do. I did use a file to file down some parts of the construction. To help it slide better. The instruction were not that bad. But, at the end it is a nice box to put up on the shelf and show people of it working. I like it.
3.0 out of 5 stars Blood, tears, and an abandoned project
The pieces are so difficult to remove from the frames that injury is almost guaranteed. I’ve done a couple of wood puzzles and I think these are just too thick. The instructions are decent enough, but mistakes are inevitable, and once you make a mistake, you’re screwed - it’s very difficult to resolve if it’s even possible. We’ve abandoned this for now after getting about 3/4 through it. Maybe we’ll come back to it at some point, but I’m not sure it’s worth it.
