Just turn the tube to connect the panels to form a storage shelf. This series is made of CARB Grade composite wood and stainless steel tubes. There is no foul smell of chemicals, durable and it is the most stable medium density composite wood used to make RTA furniture. Care instructions: Wipe clean with clean damped cloth. A great value.I assembled this shelving unit on my kitchen table, a perfect height. 4 feet for the base, 12 columns (4 between each set of shelves), and 4 caps for the top shelf. Nice heavy unit. Absolutely a great unit for my closet shoe storage.One warning: do NOT store wet shoes on this unit. If so, pressed wood materials will swell and warp. (This unit is not appropriate for mud room use.)

Product arrived quickly with no indication that it may have been repackaged. Shelves stacked in the box with nothing between them. First shelf I removed had a handprint on it, all shelves covered in a dusty film, some have rough spots around the edges as if they were knocked into something and every single shelf has scratches on the top side. Purchased as a “deal” didn’t expect to receive a product that appears to have been partially used and repackaged with new hardware. For the price I paid I guess I can’t complain.Easy to assemble. Seems sturdy. No tools needed, plastic supports with threads that mostly lined up. Out of 12 only had issues with 2 supports and 2 caps that threads didn’t align and just required a little more umph. Fully assembled it’s a nice addition to my entryway perfect height & storage. Giving 3 stars because for the price I’ll still use it will just have to add something on the top shelf to cover the scratches
