I wanted a new chess clock and was drawn to this one mainly because of the new way to setup/change time-controls. As a casual but avid blitz chess player, my biggest pet peeve with other digital clocks is setting time-controls: I have had a few over the years (and tried many others belonging to friends) and each one could be counted on as being entirely counter-intuitive. I would end up playing the same time-control even when I wanted to change it, just because I didn’t want to go through the torture of setting it and risking messing up the existing one when the multi-page manual is not at hand.One other thing (something that should be so obvious!) but I love that there is a Replay button at the end of the game: one click and you’re ready to play with your last settings (for some reason my old clock was about 5 clicks and a reboot to do something that obvious- so strange!)Well, this clock solves that nicely: Setting up a time-control is as simple as swiping a settings wheel (we’re all familiar with that I’m sure). Just takes at most 5 seconds, no matter what you’re setting up for. Their claim is true: There’s literally no need for a user manual. I only play chess, but I can see how setting up time-controls for Scrabble, Go, Backgammon, etc. would be just as easy.I had a chance to play quite a few blitz games with friends and I have to say I am impressed by both the simplicity and the looks of this thing. I have an iPhone 12, but I downloaded the app on my old iPhone 6 too and it fits just as well, with or without a protective phone cover.The clock base (I paid a bit extra for the deluxe) is sturdy and refined. The clock face looks awesome. There is even “tournament mode”, which disables all other phone functions while the clock is in use. The whole thing… just works on every level.Having used this clock for a couple of weeks now, I feel very comfortable saying that this was money well spent. Feels like the game clock for the 21st century and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to the “traditional” digital clock. I’ll try to report back after a few months of use, but so far I’m very happy with my purchase. Very high quality.

My husband is hard to buy gifts for so I was thrilled to find this. He is an avid chess player but the equipment he and his friends play with is so cheap (the pieces are worn out plastic and they carry around dirty roll up placemats). It was way overdue for an upgrade! It’s tricky to buy such a specific gift for someone who is as into it as he is, but the full bundle really nailed it. It’s the same size as his old set and is portable even though it’s all wood - it fits in a very nice messenger bag. The clock is clever and easy to use, it’s a dock for a phone that runs chess clock software. The pictures do not really convey the quality of how beautiful and well made this product is.We took it out to a bar to meet up with friends and the chess players there were literally drooling over it! Highly recommend!

This item Is not Useful in the Chess Circuit, For one , No one want to spend $40 for something could just down through A free app, Place your Phone in a Receptical and its render your phone unusable while your engaging in a Chess match.

Product arrived in great condition and in very nice packaging. It's extremely durable. It is definitely the most durable chess clock.I really admire the software. They have made it completely customizable in terms of settings yet managed to make navigating all the options clean, and beautiful.The only issue is the phone it is paired with. I use a mid-range phone. For blitz games, my phone goes to sleep (gyroscopic wise) after a minute. So when I press the button/ lever the phone takes a full 1.5 seconds sometimes to register. My phone's gyroscope takes time to wake up.This is no fault of the Tempest company and no fault of the clock itself. It's just my phone is lacking.The software and the device itself is ultimate. I think it just looks better and does better than the DGT 3000 which I also have. But I won't be using it for blitz unless I get a better phone. This clock just looks Boss. Other chess clocks look like CRTs behemoths from the 90s compared to this. It definitely looks like Alien Tech!!!

Tempest Clock is a combined product (stand + phone app) leveraging the idea of using the smartphone accelerometer for turning it into a chess clock. This is a brilliant design where on the one hand you get the nice physical touch of a clock where you are able to push buttons, and on the other you have the flexibility that traditional non-software clocks can't give you.The clock mechanics feel very solid, and overall the phone is very stable secured into the leather fissure, regardless of how hard you may knock on the clock. The only minor annoyance is that you will likely have to take it out of the case to fit it. The fissure is pretty long, fitting any phone smaller than a phablet, but pretty narrow.The price tag is that of a product targeted at enthusiasts and advanced hobbyists, where you pay a plus for the materials and in return get in return a very slick finish. It may not be for everyone, but you're definitively getting what you're paying for.It's a mystery to me how this is not more popular. Maybe the criticism behind potential issues for tournament play, where you may want to avoid using electronic devices anywhere near a chess board? Regardless of whether the tournament mode enforcing your phone into airplane mode will ever be "whitelisted" by FIDE and the like (why not if this gets the appropriate marketing/media attention?), you still get a fantastic gadget that is sleek and "just works". Overall, while the product is very much finished and usable from day 0, the potential of Tempest is still largely untapped, and the development team is very keen on listening for product improvement / app development.

Many time where the leather is still unsoftened it won't allow the tilt to register onto the app so it's kinda been a useless buy..

we decided to level up our board games - we have the usual collection of favourites but they are in a shambles. we are ordering the tempest board and pieces next but the clock is something else ! we acutally use it foe all our biard game nights even games with more than 2 players not just chess but everything. (nothing speeds up a game of monopoly with 4 players like this clock. easy to set multiplayer or 2 player modes. there is an oine user manual in the app but honestly its so simple to set we only looled at it once. the rest is intuitive. the base is solid walnut and very end. the app is just gorgeous and essy to read with big digits. super well designed. sturdier than it looks! super easy to use! fun for all games. worth the price when you consider the software too. (they released 2 upgrades since we got ours). happy with our purchase!
Not impressed
Can anyone justify paying over 50 dollars for an item that has no electronics in it? its a piece of plastic that YOU have to tilt your phone to operate....

The media could not be loaded. I ordered Tempest Deluxe because I travel quite often and a chess clock takes up quite a bit of space in my small bag. Therefore, this seemed like a good solution to my problem.As soon as Tempest arrived, I was happy because it completely met my expectations. It is so classy and practical! I love the sound it makes when I press it and I also enjoy the leather that the clock is covered with. The walnut base matches my beautiful wooden chess set as well!The deluxe version comes with a small carry bag that is suited to it so that it is protected when I carry it somewhere. I love that! Also, my phone fits perfectly in it. I was scared it would fall out if I turn it around, but it stayed in place. I have a few different cases, and found one that fits really well so i guess that's the one i'll use on my phone. It means it will hold super tight if I play blitz or bullet and get into time trouble!I absolutely love my new Tempest Deluxe and would definitely recommend it as it is very practical, looks nice, and is extremely well built! To say the app is simple to use is an understatement. But, it comes with user manual built into the app and online if you need it - so no one will get confused!
