Citizen Kane (The Criterion Collection) [4K UHD]

Description:

In the most dazzling debut feature in cinema history, twenty-five-year-old writer-producer-director-star Orson Welles synthesized the possibilities of sound-era filmmaking into what could be called the first truly modern movie. In telling the story of the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of a William Randolph Hearst–like newspaper magnate named Charles Foster Kane, Welles not only created the definitive portrait of American megalomania, he also unleashed a torrent of stylistic innovations—from the jigsaw-puzzle narrative structure to the stunning deep-focus camera work of Gregg Toland—that have ensured that Citizen Kane remains fresh and galvanizing for every new generation of moviegoers to encounter it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the premium price to have stellar audio and video quality

Any film buff who has any sort of physical media collection should have this in their inventory. The greatest benefit to owning this movie on a physical disc in 4k format is that you’re getting the absolute best quality audio and video at the highest bitrate available. Having watched it on disk, obviously it’s a tremendous and noticeable improvement over any streaming service and certainly even an upgrade over previous 1080p blu rays. Obviously being a 75+ year old film, you’re not going to be getting the cutting edge audio and video that you’d get with a current generation production. Still, to be able to watch a historically great movie like this in the absolute best possible viewing experience is worth the premium price to purchase this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars This film deserves ten stars and the Criterion Collection is the way to truly see it

This amazing film speaks for itself, so I'll just point out that the love and attention paid to it by Criterion makes this the format to have. Sure, you can rent and stream films but owning the Blu-Ray means you OWN the film, and no capricious studio or streaming exec is going to stop you from watching it. Of course, you need a Blu-Ray player, but even if you don't have one of those, newer XBOXes and Playstations with optical drives will play Blu-Ray movies. An XBOX Series X can show all of Criterion's restoration of the film into 4K UHD. The bonus features are nice, too. Build your collection today... and start with Citizen Kane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Criterion? 4K? A match made in heaven.

You can never go wrong with Critereon Collection movies - they are worth every dime you spend. They restore the film's quality, package beautifully, and add special features - like booklets of trivia, shooting details, set photographs, etc. Any collector would be thrilled to receive a Critereon movie, and who can go wrong with Citizen Kane?

5.0 out of 5 stars "You know Mr. Thatcher, if I hadn't been very rich, I might have been a really great man."

Considered one of if not THE best American film of all time, critics and fans continue to offer Orson Welles' first try at film making as a standard bearer of American cinema. Many have written thousands and thousands of pages of books, critiques and reviews as well as whole college courses sighting the innovative, experimental camera and staging techniques employed and the grand semi-biographical take (not outright stated but obviously recognized) on William Randolph Hearst and other American media tycoons of the era that features the well-known story line of the American rise to riches and fame as well as the potentially horrible corrupting power of it all to one's soul. Watching this entertaining, educational and morally probing film is quite the experience and even if it's not some people's favorite idea of movie night it should be at least an essential one-time viewing to understand its massive historical importance to the art of American cinema. This Criterion Collection 4K UHD Blu-ray 4-disc set is an overall fine success with two caveats. The 4K remaster of this film is quite outstanding with tight to moderate film grain showing greater details than the included and also remastered SDR HD Blu-ray as well as a subtle increase to blacker blacks and more greyscale gradients that are absolutely clear with minimal crush. Some of the interior scenes at Xanadu and elsewhere are just stunning with an almost 3D look. The LPCM mono soundtrack has been cleaned and freshened. Dialog and music are presented without distortion. So, the first caveat is the possible flawed SDR presentation on the included Blu-ray disc of the film. At about 30 minutes in the picture grows dark and murky all the rest of the way through to the end of the film. The 4K UHD disc has no issue. This was a first pressing error by Criterion themselves and was easily dealt with by either snail mailing the problem disc back or taking a picture of the disc and emailing Criterion for quick replacement. However, my included feature film Blu-ray disc (purchased as of mid-January 2024) played fine without any SDR error so one can hopefully assume at least Bolo has replaced most of its old stock with all corrected new product from Criterion. Can't the say the same for other on-line or brick and mortar sellers so just a word of warning. Also, the packaging is a partial issue as the 4 discs are lodged in an overengineered cardboard slipcover design the makes for very problematic removal and subjects them to fingerprints and easy scratching on removal and replacement. Many buyers simply replace this cardboard holder with separate or multiple 3rd party Blu-ray cases for proper non-damaging storage. In spite of these listed negatives this Criterion release is still well worth the purchase. There is a fantastic 40+ page booklet containing a deep dive essay. Hours and hours of film commentary, behind the scenes, featurettes, interviews, etc. are included for basically a master class on this film. And, of course, a 4K UHD and Blu-ray disc presentation that are the best you'll ever see of this movie in your home. A strong must own for cinephiles and overall movie lovers and well worth the time and money invested.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality transfer loaded with extras. Questionable packaging design.

Amazing film and excellent upgrade from the Blu-Ray. I'm not a fan of the strange gatefold packaging Criterion chose. There's no way to remove a disc without getting fingerprints on it. Other than that small complaint, it's an excellent release of this classic to add to the library.

Movie: 5 stars. Criterion Box: 1 star

A.D. · May 10, 2023

Everything positive that can be said about this classic film has already been written.I sent an email to Criterion complaining about their dismal box but there reply was indifferent.Their box unfolds into a sort of cross shape and each disk is inserted into a very tight, hard, cardboard slit. After much struggling, I removed all four disks from their cardboard slit and put them into plastic sleeves from which they could be removed and replaced with much greater ease.Considering that Criterion had to re-release the BluRay version of the movie in this boxed edition, one would have thought that they would have a better designed package. This is well below the packaging quality I had come to expect from Criterion.
